Thanks for relating your experiences. Very interesting. That rear-view pic of the Swift does impress. In fact, I have always thought they are great looking little cars, no doubt about it.

A Yaris is still in the frame to be a possible choice, but need an opportunity to thoroughly check them out locally, hands-on. ????

One thing, Madgee, forgive me, but I can't quite work out which car you're referring to when you say 'a little sluggish'. The Yaris or the Swift? ????????

He is probably referring to the Yaris when he says a little bit sluggish.

The Yaris is about the same power as the Swift but 185 kg heavier.  Swift GL is 875 kg and Yaris is 1060 kg.  I only have the weight for 2022 Yaris but the new 2023 Yaris is just a minor facelift.

I bought a 1 year old Swift in 2014 for 395k (GA model with a nice body kit and wide wheels!) from a family member. I recently sold it for 220k with 125000km on the clock, never missed a heartbeat in 10 years. Apart from regular dealership maintenance, new front shocks fitted. The dealership was excellent in all aspects, including price of servicing. I highly recommend the Suzuki Swift and the recent new model looks even better, I'm tempted to replace it with a limited edition Swift model but .................
Having a test-drive in the New 2023 Toyota Yaris Ativ Premium Luxury with a Presto body kit fitted is tempting me away. A far superior car for the money, even though it's a little sluggish but a good looker. My days of pedal to the metal passed many moons ago and I rarely do any trips above 50 km so it will suit my needs, just that little bit bigger wheelbase than the Yaris .

The new Swift is a stunner with a body kit fitted!

To my eyes the Swift, particularly the latest model, is a very good looking car.

But with this body kit it's an automotive crime scene.

I accept, of course, that people's tastes vary.

  3. I am also looking for a small hatchback.

As I am determined to go to my grave without ever owning an automatic that means a choice between:

    Celerio

    Swift up to 2018

    Nissan March

I will probably end up with the Swift.

Nissan isn't bad but I think it looks like a clown car.

Celerio is dirt cheap in manual form and I like simple cars.

If you are "entirely legal," "have never used an agent," and are using 800K as a basis of comparison, you appear to be making an argument about the merits of using the income method versus the on-deposit method for a retirement visa. That has nothing to do with the thread topic which is immigration office corruption.

Your argument in favor of the income method ignores several other realities and drawbacks. First and foremost, the 800K functions as an emergency fund, the key point being that the funds are readily available. So to do an apples to apples comparison of investment returns, you would have to compare overseas bank yields to Thai bank yields, not a comparison, for example, to returns on stock market or crypto investments which are riskier, and are generally inappropriate for emergency funds.  True, right now there's a huge differential between overseas and Thai bank yields, but for most of the past 20 years overseas bank rates haven't been that much higher than Thai banks. For a long time after the financial crisis overseas bank rates were lower than Thai banks and in some cases negative.

Your analysis also ignores that the income method subjects the visa holder to interest rate risk as interest rates fluctuate from month to month. Look at how many people from Great Britain using the monthly income method got caught with their pants down when the Pound collapsed after Brexit.

Also, it should be noted that any unspent funds transferred under the monthly income method probably end up being parked in a local bank anyway.

Finally, my post wasn't self-righteous. It comes from resentment from having experienced mistreatment on a couple of occasions at immigration.  I suspect the officer was deliberately trying to make things as difficult as possible in the hopes that I would become so exasperated that I would resort to using an agent, which would in turn provide additional under-the-table revenue as well.

It was not an argument in favour of the income method.  That has significant drawbacks as you rightly point out.

I think I have the answer to the question.

I went to my local Toyota dealer also in the South today.  The sales woman there, who spoke excellent English, explained that they did not have any Yaris remaining onsite because they were expecting delivery of an "all new" Yaris literally this afternoon with minor styling changes.  They did not know the prices for the new cars today but higher than present model.  Based on what she said the changes are mostly electronic toys.  The car underneath is the same old Yaris as it has been since 1834.

Maybe go back in a weeks time.

The sales woman at my local dealer was right.

A new model Yaris was introduced yesterday.  It is on Toyota's website now.

A bit of a restyle, more electronics.  I do like the fact that all variants have LED headlights now.

Your hope for a "smarter person" is futile, unless by that you mean you will smarten up, understand and meet their requirements.

After reading several of your threads, I have no idea why you assumed that you can just walk into a Thai immigration office with a foreign marriage certificate and expect them to accept it at face value.

They accept a foreign marriage certificate for the 60 day extension where I live in the South without additional red tape.

As just about everybody here knows Thai immigration are inconsistent from one office to another as to their requirements.

Jungle, can you tell me if you entered on a tourist visa, or did you enter on a visa exemption?    I’m from US so we enter on 45 day exemption currently.

Second, can you provide details on that 60 day extension?    Is your marraige cert from outside of Thailand, and if so, did they require a translation and authentication from your govt?   Did you have to submit a Khor Ror 22, which is the Thai Registration of Family Status ?

    Thanks

    1.  I entered on a tourist visa.

    2.  I married outside of Thailand and no KR 22 was required for the 60 day extension.  No translation and certification of marriage certificate required for this extension.
