I doubt it; but even if they did, why would that matter?  Maybe you're a little too sensitive!

No need to worry. You'll fall off the branch before the kid finishes school.

Doesn't worry me. I couldnt give a shit. Sad for the kid though.

we pay now 18.500 THB rent, the last person who rented this house payed 30.000 THB.
When we looked at this place (which had been empty for 6 months) we told her our budget (between 15 and 18k) and we probably would rent it more than one year. They tried first 25k, then 22K but I told them I was not planning to pay more for this house (I really liked the place but enough is enough). That was on Wednesday. On Saturday I got a phonecall if we still were interested. Yes, but for 18K. On Sunday we signed the contract. 500 THB extra only because of Bungalowpark maintenance. So far we did not regret our decission.

Good bargaining. Knowing it was empty for 6 months gave you the edge. They either drop the price or risk many more empty months. Knowledge is key when bargaining.

It's also telling that there is no word for "distortion" (as it applies to audio) in the Thai language.  Trust me--I speak a fair amount of Thai, and not only does the word not exist, it's virtually impossible to explain the concept of audio distortion to a Thai (unless of course they've studied recording engineering, etc., overseas--and then, the conversation is going to be in English).

Not it's not. Music not smooth it's warped. Easy.

Yep them pesky Thais again. No one else in the world plays their sound systems really loud or disturb their neighbours or have massive sound systems in their cars or pick ups. You also never see loud concerts or parties anywhere else either good pick up you must be right it's dodgy Thai genetics. No where near as good as "ours" :saai:

These anti Thai topics are so stupid. The creators must live under rocks or be 90yo and forget what happens in the real world.

Of course she doesn't need 50k a month, that's a ridiculous statement to make without knowing a lot more about her situation and lifestyle. My major worry, if I were you, would be why you feel the need to seek reassurance from strangers regarding your future partner's honesty. I don't mean that in a rude or flippant way; I would be genuinely concerned if I were you. After all, you know her and we don't.

Spend 2 days in a row with somebody and by the end of day 2 if you can't work out whether the person is genuine or a liar then go see a doctor and get some scans done.

I'm not indignant but you are painting with a brush that is far too broad. I've been with my gf and recently wife for 10 1/2 years and never had any negative experiences with money. I have had one or two financial dealings with her family that I wasn't too happy about - they insisted on paying off the outstanding balance of our mortgage last year, which I didn't want them to do - but overall I couldn't be happier.

He was dating trash that's all. If he couldnt work out he was 4th in importance for months you have to wonder about his awareness.

Wow so many replies, a lot of good advice, thank you.

I stayed in Khon Kaen for the 4 months, I also stayed in Khon Kaen for 2 months over 1 year ago.

I had some friends there and most of the time played golf 4 days a week, plus swimming for the exercise. I don’t drink much alcohol.

Concerning the ladies, I did have 2 short relationships with Khon Kaen Thai ladies, I didn’t give them any money as they did not need any and they lived close to where I was staying. Both relationships were not right for a long term relationship, I think they were both nice honest ladies but not right for me.

I was then communicating with my present lady, a long story but although her family home is in Khon Kaen provence she was working in Bangkok. The problem was she was seemed more and more like the one for me (I am looking for a long term relationship), and she writes English very well. The problem is her working in Bangkok. She works in a factory and earns a basic 10,000 baht per month but she regularly does a lot of overtime and so earns 15,000 baht per month. She has given me the name of the company she works for and I have seen it in video calls. She has an older son who is married and has a job but she has to support her youngest son who is 15 and at school in Bangkok.

She managed to take 6 weeks leave from her work and to be with me in Khon Kaen.

Basically I would not want to live in Bangkok because I think the air is unhealthy, also I would not want her to work. Her son can stay in Bangkok in the same small house because other family live close.

What do I do?  We got along well. When we discussed money I straight away said I would give her the 15,000 baht per month, I think that is only fair.  It is within my monthly budget and renting out my house will help.

Is she honest with me?  I’m not sure, so far I think she is.

Thanks everyone for all the good advice, I now understand more than I did.

I had already decided never to spend money in Thailand that I would want back.

Been busy today so haven’t  telephoned HMRC yet

    Thanks again

    Keith

In basic negotiations you never concede money up front. You have just signalled to the other party that you are a soft target which means it could go from 15000 to 30000 just as easy.

I rented my apartment using a managing agent in London when I first came out to live in Thailand 10 years ago.

Every month I had the tenants complaining they needed something to be repaired or replaced. After one year I had made about 1% nett income based on the value of the place.

Decided to sell and used some of the money to buy a place here to live and another to rent  out, on which I get more than 5% and live nearby so can monitor any requests for repairs etc. to be done there.

You can get 6% dividend yield on shares. No tenants. No repairs.
