  1. My wife (ex?) and I attended the court at Chatuchak on Tuesday and will now await the announcement of our divorce in writing in 10 days time.

I would now like to apply for a retirement visa; I have the required 800,000 in the bank for the appropriate months. I have read previous posts and I believe the Non O visa is the most convenient route. I don't want to pay any overstay (my current marriage visa allows me to stay til November)

What are my options? Do I have to leave the country and if so which would you suggest?

  2. Extra info, but all I really need is the mathematics dealt with. She has agreed to waive any future payments to her and the children. I am not working and doubt I ever will; I am less than 2 years away from retirement. I will have no income in 3 months time.

We are willing to split legal costs 50/50

Regarding payment for the flat ....We took out a 10,000GBP mortgage so with my savings and the loan, we purchased the flat whilst married in December 2001. My wife started work shortly after and contributed to the family income. The mortgage was finished after about 4 years, we paid early.

  3. I applied under the Right to Buy about January 2001...married September 10 2001 and the house was in my name as of December 5 2001.

However it is only the mathematics that we cannot agree on. I am giving 50% less the amount that I had already saved upon marriage.

If we can agree on this point we can go ahead with the divorce.

  4. My wife and I have been discussing the financial affairs upon our divorce. We are both living in Thailand

I had 17,000GBP already saved on our marriage day. I have a flat in my name in UK, say, worth 120,000 GBP. She says I can keep the 17k upon sale of the flat. She works it out one way, I work it out another way.

    1...120,000 less 17,000 =103,000 / 2 = 51,500...therefore I get 68,500GBP

2..120,000 /2 = 60,000 each, then she gives me the 17,000 personal money saved.. I would get 77,000GBP

    What do forum members think?

  5. I married a Thai lady in the UK in 2001. We moved to Thailand in 2006. We have 2 daughters by our marriage aged 7 and 10. We have been seperated nearly two years. We have agreed on all financial aspects and custody etc. We want a straightforward, no complication divorce.

From what I have read it appears we have to have a contested divorce because we are both living in Thailand. We did not marry in Thailand.

Is there anyone on this forum who has had the experience of divorcing in Thailand but married abroad?

    Any recommendations for lawyers?

  6. I have been married for 12 years to a Thai national. We married in the UK and lived there until 2006 when we both came to live in Thailand. We did not marry in Thailand. (2 children aged 7 and 10 are living with my Thai wife); we are separated for nearly 2 years now.

Can we divorce in Thailand? Is it straightforward? Thanks in advance.

  7. I am afraid I will never be going again. I walked in tonight and asked for pint of anything and was given a mug that was a half. I had offered my Thaivisa app which was approved. I asked for a pint because it was possibly cheaper than 2 halves. However when I asked for a pint the bartender put it in a bigger receptacle and added ice. I was exasperated and walked out.

  8. I bought my Local Authority flat 12 years ago for 20,000 GBP at discount. I have been letting it for the last 8 years whilst in Thailand. I am now back in the UK for a few months but living in rented accomodation because the rent contract expires in June. Once the contract expires I would like to sell the flat.

The flat is worth 110,000GBP. Is there any liability for CGT considering it was not classed as my main residence for 8 years?

  10. 15yrs of free education programme launched

A programme of 15-years free education was put into action on Wednesday, with the government distributing 18 billion baht among more than 40,000 local schools throughout the country.

Education Minister Jurin Laksanavisit presided over transfer of a total of 18.257 billion baht to public and private schools nationwide in a ceremony at Bangkok's Sri Ayudhya school.

"The government and the Education Ministry are confident that our children and our youth will have better access to education through the launch of this programme," he said.

"It will help alleviate the financial burden carried by parents in millions of families, and at the same time it will help stimulate the economy.

The minister said the money would benefit students from kindergarten to high school, including vocational education inside and outside the formal education system.

About 11.8 million students would gain access to free education. The policy would cover fees for education, books, education tools, student uniforms and recreational activities, Mr Jurin said.

"Today is the first day of the free education programme. From today onwards, schools will invite parents and students to apply for money to spend on uniforms and school equipment," he said.

Schools would buy books for their students before the next semester begins in May.

The government supports 70% of tuition costs, and parents pay the rest.

About 60,000 students would not be eligible for the money, he said. The ministry would divert this money to assist disadvantaged students in remote areas.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With reference to the above we enquired if we could obtain the discount on school fees and uniforms at our local school yesterday. We were told that our 5 year old daughter's school did not join this program [ private kindagarden].

Why is this? I though that almost all schools would offer a reduction in fees. We are currently paying 26,500 baht per term.

Why would the school not want to join when it would benefit both themseves and the parents? For example, a future family enquiring about fees would be told the above figure. A school down the road could ask for the same less 70% discount; which would you choose if they were of the same quality?
