  1. Are you intending to get a visa on arrival. Since you said you were from a European country, I guess you will be visa exempt. Make sure you have 20k baht on hand. And you have that return ticket. And your hotel reservation for 2 weeks in place ( I guess this is not necessary to show right, where you

    are staying?).

When you received the video call did you take a screenshot to save a picture of his?

By looking at the number you were able to guess that the call was from Suanphlu, right?

I dont think it is possible to record videocalls, right?)

(Has your boyfriend picked up anything at the IDC? I will certainly pray that he hasn't.  If unfortunately he has, make sure you dont catch it from him. Dont tell him I told you this.)

Make sure he has an unexpired passport before you book his ticket.

It seems the IDC staff will be able to help with the flight arrangements. It seems they are nice people after all. I wonder how much you will have to put aside for tips.

  2. Very sorry to read your sad story. I am thinking what to do. I am trying to make contact with a Thai social worker myself who has access to the IDC.

Should I go straight to suanphlu and ask for him?

    I think so.

I imagine calling from here is utopic, right?

I am not sure your call will be answered in English. Do you know any Thai?

Can I bring food or anything can help him stay better there?

I dont think those things will be allowed inside.

Should I contact the consulate of his country? (as there is no embassy).

I wonder if his passport has expired. If he has, he would need to apply for ETD, God knows how much time that will take, is he from South Africa? But

yes contact the consulate now if you can and find out what to do if his passport has expired or he hasn't got one.

As far as I know, there are no straight flights to his homeland, how should I proceed?

If he is from South Africa, he can go via NBO in Kenya, the flight is at 00.35 hrs.

FWIW, I was able to open a savings account yesterday with Krungsri on 3rd floor of EmQuartier in Bangkok. I brought with me a 6 month condo lease and my Irish passport which has a METV in it. Half an hour later I had a bank book, ATM card and mobile banking.

I tried Bangkok Bank next door but was told they wanted a notarised copy of my passport from the embassy.

Have you tried using the account to see if it works?

No, sorry but it has all my passport details and I am not about to go public on the internet with date of birth, what country, what city, passport number if I did I may as well add my bank account details and pin number

Scan and use Paint to blur the personal info. Dont know if it can be unblurred by curious types

    1. You would seem to be in a better situation than most having a sister here already to help ease you into the life here.

    2. I would advise that instead of a life coach, simply enroll in a language school to learn Thai language

    3. It also matters where in Thailand you will be staying and you might want to consider that at first a larger city/urban area might be better suited for assimilation before heading into the hinterland.

    1. Not now, definitely not after she gets married, am afraid.

    2. Can spare some time for language learning ( Thai or Chinese) on a one-on-one basis at times flexible to both of us and an hour for therapy from the life coach.

    3. My home will be Bangkok but my job would involve a lot of travelling locally and outside the province ( I have also advertised here for a woman social worker, if she doubles up as a language instructor too so much the better, I'd've thought).

As long as you do not need extensions of stay that require proof of money in a Thai bank, it would seem feasible to operate without a Thai bank account. The service provided by Thai banks varies a lot from bank to bank and branch to branch. Overall, they are not a problem if you have an ATM card (cheap and almost invariably people have them). You may also be able to get Internet banking on your account, though likely not on a tourist visa.

oi vey,  i should have known there was a bank balance requirement for getting an extension of stay on my 90 day non imm B visa.

  7. Hi Coach,

I will soon be moving to Thailand and am quite intimidated by the prospects. I am looking for somebody who can teach me Thai or Chinese and also discuss my problems and fears as I find my feet in the Kingdom. If you are a western-educated shrink or psychoanalyst, or have experience as a life coach, so much the better. But I feel the need for a coach until I have formed meaningful friendships or relationships there.  I am not comfortable with being charged by the hour for  the language sessions but wont mind your doing so for the therapy. I might need at least one session a week. Thanks and may God bless!

  8. I was delighted to read that a judge had recently ruled that Ms Yinluck Shinawatra was not guilty of the charges brought against her. I dont know how many women were cheered by the news. It should have brought a smile to every woman's face. I really hope that she can be persuaded to come back, fight the charges against her if need be, and bring democracy to Thailand if only for the upliftment of women.

Im sure it has to do with the individual who does your visa application or the Immigration officer when entering. I'm an older lady , never had an overstay, always on visas , spending 3 to 4 months through the European winter in Thailand. So obviously I have a visa and extension, or a second visa in my passport for every year I come here. I was once taken aside on arrival at Suvarnabhumi by an IO and spoken to not too politely. My passport was about 7 years into the ten, it had visas for every year I had been in Thailand, and he didn't like it ! I renewed my passport after that.I always have plenty cash , statements from my home bank and rental agreements with me. So, any thoughts on this?

I am normally highstrung after a flight and to be taken aside by an IO and to be dealt with "not too politely" I dont know how I would have reacted in your place. Certainly pays to be an older lady, I think, honest. But sometimes there are these types who fit the description of the IO you mention, if you will, who just want to impress you with the fact that they were in control. I am sure they meant well. I used to frequently come across such types in the West Indies. And they normally let me go not without writing for me their name and number on a piece of chit, in case I forgot.

Without an account with a Thai bank, yes.

Thanks. Would you say I wont be able to manage alright without a bank account? I am thinking about managing with a wallet in my purse and the rest of them notes in a safe box which will hold other things like passport etc at my digs. Owing to the horror of using bank products. Do you think Thai banks were better than Indian banks in terms of their operational excellence, in case you knew?

I’ve yet to hear of people in their 40+ having any issues at all, but I have heard of folk in their 20-30s finding it just a tad harder. I guess maybe they figure younger people ought to be working and not obtaining back to back tourist visas? And if they are rich enough to not work and to live in Thailand on back to back tourist visas, then welcome to the Elite visa :-)
