  1. soap,

Thanks for the info. The link below doesn't seem to work. I tried www.sakakkhi.ac.th, but it goes to a Thai only page with no apparent link to an English version. I'll try the email. Does that go to your or someone at the school?

    hello roamp

  2. I am thinking of living in Chiang Rai and wonder what the educational options might be for my 12 year old American daughter.

    Thanks for any information.

soap (an others on the forum) please be aware that links to external websites are not allowed under the rules. You can send it to them by PM or do them as a jump link such as samakkhiwitthayakhom school but not as a direct link.

I have also corrected your link - note to anyone using it that there is a mixture of English and Thai on the page and most of the site is in Thai. I did a quick search around and didn't find an English specific page aimed at foreign non-thai reading parents interested in this school.

  3. i first went to pattaya about 18 years ago, just come off a bad relationship (thank god) and i stepped into paradise i could sit at a bar and have 10 birds chat me up most of them with the same line that was all the english they knew but who cared,i remember having tears in my eyes having to catch the bus to return to reality.

i was hooked on the place,3 or 4 times a year i would come for a month at a time many times pinching myself and saying "is this real"then i met a guy who had just opened a bar in a sleepy soi he had the idea to cater for expats who lived there and encouraged families with kids to come and have a evening drink,so i became i good customer and friend of the owner jimmy mac "god rest his soul "who had the bar in soi 6.

when the pattaya novelty started to wear thin i started to travel around thailand looking for a place were i could settle down and be content and happy, and 15 years on a diamond of a wife and the greatest two kids anyone could have i found it in chaingrai.

when i have been asked in the uk from guys coming for the first time,i ask how long are you going for and if he his married most ofthe time the answers are the same,3 or 4 weeks and not married (for one reason or another) i have allways told them just go to pattaya and blow your brains out you will have a ball.

nowadays i only come to see a couple of old friends, the kids love the place but aweek is enough theese days, but good luck to anyone who wants to spend all their time in pattaya,i allways say "your a long time dead"

    enjoy

  4. That pic with the guy knocking his head is really stupid, just like the comment.

Who gives a flying fork about a beer from hel_l?

Ever been to Chiang Rai? I am now, it's as dead as this topic at 1.27 am.

Gonna do a tour into the hills tomorrow.

i dont think the picture is stupid, i think it depicts someone who has just tried to have a sensible

conversation with the likes of you.

you leave the beer to the men lad,you stick to the milk

  5. Hi we go Thailand every year in November for 4 weeks, got a brother living out there, and I use 084444396464 then mobile number from UK Landline 3p a minute, dont mind sharing this with you all.by the way great site........

at least some things change for the better, i can remember about 8-10 years ago paying over

one pound a minute to ring thailand on a BT phone line

  6. What happened in 7/1997 to cause the Baht to drop and stay at such a low level?

    hello stokevin

in one word corruption , the bank managers were lending money to people to build shop houses in the middle of nowhere, they gave money to builders who only needed a name to say they wanted to buy the house never taking into account if the person whose name was used had the means to pay the 15%plus interest on the loan, never mind to start paying the initial loan off.

the bubble had to burst and when it did only the i m f pulled them out, but what frightens me these same bank managers that took the bribes are still in the same job

  7. When I came here is '93 I changed my vast fortune at 36 Baht to the Pound.

    hello andy

i also changed a lot of money about the time you changed yours, but if you remember we were getting 12to16% interest whitch sofened the blow every 3 months with a fixed deposit account.

when the bubble burst, and it shot up to 90 to the pound i had just arrived back with a bundle of sterling the first thing i did was to go down to bangkok and buy a car from union auction i think it was the first car auction to be held in bangkok due to the finance companies going broke.

  8. Is there a website that shows the history of exchange rates?

I'm having a slow day at work....... :o

Yes, Here is your site for historical data 16 years back

The Sterling has had an average Bhat to sterling rate of 54.197 over the last 16 years, with a high of 76.011 in Dec 2004 and a low of 36.72 in Jan 1990.

The US Dollar has had an average Bhat to dollar rate of 33.384 over the last 16 years, with a high of 54.7 in Jan 1998 and a low of 20.66 in Jan 1981.

The Euro has had an average Bhat to Euro rate of 42.827 over the last 16 years, with a high of 53.18 in Dec 2004 and a low of 37.012 in Jan 2000.

    hello usatrader

im afraid you are wrong when you say the sterling high was 76.011in dec2004.

i have a receit in my house showing i changed 500 pound cash at the rate of 89.6 without digging the receit out i think i changed the cash in january 1998.

i had been brought up on 36-40 to the pound so you can imagine i was like a kid in a free grotto when i returned to find the rate had gone up so much

  9. Where in Chaing Rai can I find a good dental clinic that can do dental implants? Any idea of costs for visits/treatments?

    Thanks in Advance.

    hello jandb

i was recomended to go to a goverment run dental clinic on thanalai rd opposite the old chaingrai prison next to a goverment sattelite place i think, the clinic is run by dentists who normally work at the hospitals but work at this clinic on a saturday, i found the clinic very clean.

they charged me 300 bhat for an extraction and 8,000 bhat for top and bottom dentures that was 50% cheaper than what i had been quoted by a private dentist

  10. Hi boys and girls.

Here follows wath i copied in the info section above.:

12 month extension to a non-immigrant visa: If you are holding a non-immigrant visa, you have the option of extending this by 12 months based on either retirement (50 years old or over) or support to a Thai citizen, work, education and such. This may only be accomplished at an immigration office inside the Kingdom and certain criteria have to be met. Such extensions consist of a stamp in your passport detailing “issue date” and “permitted to stay until” date.

Note 1: If you are residing in the Kingdom under an extension to a non-immigrant visa and wish to leave the Kingdom at any time, then you will need to obtain a “re-entry permit” to avoid losing the extension and the subsequent need to re-apply (i.e. applying for a new non-immigrant visa and then extension of stay).

Note 2: If you are residing in the Kingdom under an extension to a non-immigrant visa it is a legal requirement that the holder reports current address to an immigration office using form TM.47 (in person or by registered mail) every 90 days. Re-entering the Kingdom is the equivalent of a 90 day report.

So i have an muliple entry non o, i am duch and my visa is done 28 may, my options then are going to penang for a multiple tourist visa or go mountly, or.......extend my non o multiple.

Offcourse the last one wouldt be the best, problem for me is thath i am "married" to an Akha without proper thai id card so i cant show a marriage cert.

But wath i do is suporting my wife who is carrying our child now for the last four mounths.

My question, do you think thath if i take "my wife" to the immigration office in Mai Sai, with a house notification form, money in the bank, and her id card, and a letter saying thath she is carrying my child (from the duch embassy) thyath they will extend my non o for 12 mounths?

    HELLO ERG

I ASKED AT THE MAI SAI IMMIGRATION OFFICE LAST MONTH ABOUT A MALAYSIAN FRIEND OF MINE WHO HAS LIVED NEAR ME FOR OVER 20 YEARS HE HAS 4 CHILDREN ALL WITH HIS NAME HAS THE FATHER ON THIER BIRTH CERTIFICATE BUT THEY NEVER GOT MARRIED.

WHAT THE POLICE GUY IN THE IMMIGRATION OFFICE(NICE GUY) SAID TO ME THAT IF HE GETS A LETTER FROM THE AMPHUR STATING THAT HE HIS THE FATHER (HE WOULD HAVE TO BRING THE HEAD MAN TO CONFIRM) HE COULD GET A YEAR VISA.

GO AND HAVE A WORD WITH HIM YOURSELF I HAVE ALLWAYS FOUND THEM VERY HELPFUL

  13. Doesn't get much lovlier than that I'm sure!

Winnipeg? Is that the American equivilent of Arkansas?

    hello trebek

if you want to talk about beer, you are talking my language i was a avid supporter of real ale beer in the uk. then about 2 years ago they imported a beer from china into chaingrai called

L.C.R beer well what a beer no joke its the best beer that i have tasted and i have tasted some beers in my time, any way the thais did not take to the beer mabe they like waking up with there 6-4%beer chang headache they also had a problem at the chaing khong border i believe with the customs anyway they stopped any more shipments from coming. i was lucky to find a outlet that still had about 80 cases left so ive been drinking from this stock since but im afraid the well is nearly dry now so i suppose the info on the A A in chaingrai will come in handy

  14. This thread has served its purpose (until we got off the subject....once or twice). I appreciate you all for responding, and I hope to meet many of you this summer.

    Cheers,

    Trebek

    hello mr trebek

i have just browsed the response from your first post last year,i was a bit taken back with one or two of the responses there was a few distasteful words mentions for me if somebody said something to me that i did not like i would sort it out face to face rather than post it on a forum were the guy is asking whats the place like to bring his son too.

i dont know how old your son his but in my case i have two kids that have so far have not given me a moments trouble they travel on average four hours a day to go and come home from school because we choose to live in a village just outside of chaingrai i make sacrafices to pay the school fees but when i see on public transport buses in the uk "its cool to be in school"because they wont go to school even though its free and then i read in the newspapers that the best way to reform the so many little yobos is to send them on all expensives paid holidays i think the sacrafices i make here are worhwhile.

i dont want to go on too much about chaingrai but for me overall its the best place in the world to live i first came here over 18 years ago built a house 15 years ago and rest assured i will die here later than sooner i hope.

if you are serious about living in chaingrai give it a chance the positives far outweigh the negatives

  15. Dear All,

My Son's 1st birthday is rapidly approaching and I thought a good investment would be to buy 1 Rai of land (or is it my wife's idea ?:o )

We have been offered land near the family home in Khon Kaen province (Rice farming land with irrigation etc).

I would just like some advice with:-

    Average price for 1 Rai

Ownership of land for 1/2 Thai son (UK & Thai Passport)

Apologies if this question/s has been asked before but I guessed the prices may be quite fluid!!

    Many thanks :D

    hello markyboy

i dont know what the land prices are in khon kaen but if you buy the 1 rai of rice farming land it will need to be backfilled with soil if you wish to build a house etc on the land in the future and this could be very expensive so i would check how much to back fill before buying rice land

  16. Thanks soap, thats good to hear. Very similar circumstances to mine, what with wifes ID card having my surname too. So hopefully it will be quite straight forward as my wife had thought . I understand that the tax will be about .5% as the transfer is between mother and daughter. I just have one question arising from your post, when you say don't forget a copy of my passport. Is a straight forward photocopy OK or did you have to get it notorized or anything ?

    Thanks again.

    hello boogie

just a copy of your passport is ok, dont worry about it everything is straight forward theese days the hardest part is waiting in the land office for the paper work to be done

  17. I posted here last year about a house we bought whilst in Thailand. We were unable to complete the deal while we were still there and eventually had to put it in my mother-in-laws name. We would now like to transfer the house to my wife's name while we are back there in November this year. Can anyone advise me on what the process is like for doing this ? We will be in Thailand for 5 weeks, but only 3 weeks in the same area that the house is in. I was wondering if this will be long enough and if anything could be done before hand to speed up the process at the land office.

My wife is under the impression that because it is a transfer from mother to daughter it should be straight forward . I would never take anything like that for granted !! :o

hello boogie i had the same situation a few years ago when a farang married to a thai, the thai lost all her rights to own land etc but thankful the stupid rule was changed.

when the time came that my wife could own land we just went down to the land office with my wifes mother who stated that she wished to transfer the chinord into her daughers name they asked me to sign a form because my wifes ID card had my surname, the form stated that i had no right to the land, i cant remember if we paid land/house tax if we did i dont think it was much if the transfer

his between family the whole process was straight forward and we waited about 6 hours (thai time)

dont forget a copy of your passport

  18. i have just browes the general topic forum were they are having a poll asking about the best place to live in thailand.

i was very surprised to see chaingrai only had one vote and that was mine so if you dont get on and vote we could end up with bangkok or pattaya topping the poll (can you imagine that)

  19. over the last 18 years i have spent a lot of time in bangkok, pattaya chaingmai, and and not so much down south but when i came to chaingrai i knew this was the place for me the people the weather the cost of living are only a few of the good points about chaingrai.

my wife whose family lives a 1,000 k from here loves chaingrai her family want to give her a share of some family land but she tells them she does not want any,we have been married for 13 years have two great kids and are really happy in chaingrai

  20. hello sawadee

welcome to chaingrai,in my opinion its the best place in the world i have lived here for over 15 years, been married to a diamond of a thai wife since i came here we have two wonderful kids and we are a really happy family. but beware i am sure many many farang will agree with me this is not allways the case plenty of relationships finish up on the rocks mabe the thai culture does not suit the western way of life.

visas= if you are married to a thai you can apply for a one year visa if you have 400,000 bhat in the bank you must come in on a non imigrant visa cat =O

if you are over 55 you can get a retirement visa if you have 800,000 bhat in the bank or can show cash in the bank and a good monthly pension coming in again you must have a cat=0visa

you can apply before you come in for i think but i am not sure a one year mullible entry visa that enables you to stay for one year as long as you go over the border a couple of times ayear this is no ploblem up here as the border is only 65k away.

i know many farang who dont have a visa they just go to the border once a month to get a 30 day extention

cost of living in my opinion is very cheap in chaingrai if you shop at the markets a lot of the fruit and veg comes in from china whitch is not that far away,i would say you could rent a decent house for 5,000 bhat depending on what you want, i would say i live very well but dont go overboard on 30,000 bhat a month and that keeps me and the family very well thank you.

if you are coming to live in chaingrai please beware like every were in thailand people want to sell you everything you cannot own land so beware before you spend any big money take advice from people who know
