Trump Plans new Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China
Lacessit replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Someone posted a bar chart showing what America got with the tariffs, and what was paid out to US farmers. Of course, the farmers were dudded, just like any other Trump deal. For the offense of questioning China's treatment of minorities, China slapped steep tariffs on wine, lobsters and milk formula, and halted Australian shipments of iron ore. If you think China won't respond even more strongly to Trump's tariffs, you are living in La-La land. -

If you look at what happened to farm produce exported to China in the last Trump administration, farmers were hit so hard by retaliatory tariffs Trump had to come up with massive subsidies to placate them. A lose-lose situation. Is that macro-economic enough for you? -

Then why are they talking about retaliatory measures? What happens to American gas prices when Trump has a 25% tariff on the oil imported from Canada? What happens to sales of American cars when Canada puts a 25% tariff on them? Wishful thinking on your part, or an overdose of Trump Kool-Aid. -
Russia is being forced to cannibalize domestic aircraft to keep services going. It's not getting any parts or software upgrades from Boeing or Airbus. It has no capacity to build its own passenger aircraft, in an economy on a wartime footing. Russia has ceased exporting refined oil products. It needs every drop for Ukraine and the domestic market. The Russian education system collapsed in the mid-eighties. The scientists and engineers from that era are on the cusp of retirement. There has also been a brain drain of younger people escaping the draft. Oil wells in the permafrost are freezing, the Western technicians and advanced equipment needed to keep them operational are gone. In addition, the Russian demographic is declining at one of the fastest rates in the world. You are dead wrong when you say there is nothing Russia needs from the world. It needs human capital, and technology. It currently buys washing machines and refrigerators from the West, for the computer chips to go into its military vehicles. It has zero capacity for making high-end chips of its own. I am reminded of the early Cold War. Russia was buying about 30 optical emission spectrometers from Bausch and Lomb in America. It turned out the spectrometers were then cannibalized for the diffraction gratings, which went into missile guidance systems. History repeats itself. I doubt the ordinary Russians watching their food costs inflating by 10%, or the purchasing power of 100 rubles decline to less than a single dollar, would agree money is "made up". The Chinese don't believe so, they will only pay Russia in yuan.

Trump Plans new Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China

I'm not sure why you want to live in denial of basic economic policy. History shows any country who puts tariffs on imported goods and services pays for it with increased internal costs, and retaliatory measures. There's no such thing as a free lunch. -

Every time I see medical equipment in a hospital, it has a German or Japanese brand name on it. Permit me to doubt the device you are using to post was made in America. The USA also has a plethora of natural disasters - bushfires, hurricanes and tornadoes. That will get worse with Trump environmental policies. Tell me, who is going to pick your crops after Trump has deported all the illegals?- 174 replies

He seems to be very knowledgeable about the inner workings of American government. Why should he respond to you, when you are belittling his post?

A political rant with verifiable claims. Agree, America and the rest of the world is looking at economic chaos. A guy who has 7 business bankruptcies behind him, running the world's biggest economy - what could go wrong?

They only want the photo page, side by side with a copy of your passbook balance. I did not get a receipt. It would be a matter of repeating the exercise, if the first did not take. -
So having an energy secretary with the IQ of a turnip, in charge of the safekeeping of millions of litres of radioactive waste, does not concern you. Trump voters are really going to get the government they deserve. Tighten your jockstrap, increased cost of living, reduced welfare checks and healthcare, RFK in charge of the nation's dental health. A sh!tshow for the next four years, self-inflicted.

Trump is going to impose tariffs of 25% on imports from Canada and Mexico, from Day One. 35% on imports from China. I would like an intelligent Trump supporter to explain to me the following: 1/ How this policy will not cause the cost of living to rise in America, with consequent inflation. 2/ How this policy will not provoke retaliatory actions from those countries, making American exports less competitive.

K bank E-mail with Tax Forms attached ?

I took the FATCA form in. I did not include the IRS forms, not American. Some puzzlement from the staff, they phoned head office. Asked me if I had received an email from Kasikorn, answer yes. They checked the form, took a photocopy of my passport and savings book together. Finish. I included the number from my Thai pink card. I did not include my Australian tax number, or any address in Australia. -
This is an example of the secondhand modern Toyotas one can see all over Yangon, big and luxurious. Due to strict environmental licensing in Japan, it's prohibitive to keep a car there for more than 2 or 3 years. Smart countries import them quite cheaply. The junta in 2020? decreed LHD vehicles only, so they are no longer imported. I guess that means Myanmar has joined the dumb countries. Australia being one of them.
-
I can remember remarking there seemed to be no motorbikes in Yangon, only to be told the junta had banned them for fear of assassination. The junta also decreed vehicles should drive on the right, to shed the links with its British colonial past. Then stopped the importation of cheap second hand right-hand drive vehicles from Japan. So now there's a mix of RHD and LHD cars driving on the RHS, in what can only be described as a cluster you know what. Many fond memories of the Burmese people, their wages are a third of what they earn working in Thailand. Aung Sang Suu Khy is still deeply revered, referred to as "The Lady". A lot of intermarriage of Indians and Burmese in Yangon, the mix produces some stunningly beautiful women. Photo is one of the oldest Toyotas I have seen, I think pre WWII.
