Not entirely true. Son of a Friend got busted for Drink Driving on a Motobike a while ago at night. Had to stay the night in jail, morning go to Court and his Fine (because first offense) was 3000 THB. If he is caught the 2nd time it will be much harder and also has to do community service. !
thought they sent drunks on a re hab course ???

Start running a good, safe and reliable 24 hour local bus service in all cities and bigger towns and the drink driving numbers will fall. People have no real alternative to get home after a night other than driving. This is all the failure of authorities.
And just where will THEY put all the bus stops??

A multiple re-entry permit is the same as a single re-entry permit. The only difference is that you can use it a unlimited number of times to enter the country and be stamped in to the date you your extension ends when you use it.
one can leave the country as many times one wants...BUT only within that year.....

Why not make it five years across the board ?
I think it would be a better deterrent, rather than making a pre midnight attack a lesser offence.
do you know where you are??
YOUR IN THAILAND they dont think to simplify terms in jail.
By the way I AGREE WITH YOU

In a separate press conference, National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) spokeswoman Col Sirichan Ngathong said that army, police and administrators had confiscated 6,435 vehicles (4,752 motorbikes and 1,683 cars and trucks) and 2,291 driving licences from drink drivers during April 11-16. Throughout this period, officers found 177,134 motorcyclists and 146,017 motorists violated traffic laws and prosecuted 131,674 motorcyclists and 91,499 motorists, she added.

Start with getting the police to enforce the laws all year round, not just at songkran. Enforce the existing laws rigorously for all and the death toll will drop.
I have said before that there are only 250,000 coppers for a population of about 65 million people. And Thailand is a very BIG country......so therefore Police Force is very small to enforce any laws...

In countries where you have to take many hours of tutored driving lessons before qualifying for a driving test, then sit a written exam it's still daunting when you first drive solo.
Thailand all you do is watch a video pay the fee & go on the road all within one day.
Zero experience which equates to the daily death toll, add drink/drugs into the mix & you get the sorts of figures that get you the number one spot for all the wrong reasons.
But this is Thai culture... make life easy for everyone not harder by having to train & qualify to a standard before you drive.
the video shows ALL THAIS how to drive !!! then they get on the road and forget what they have watched.
Recently I had to watch the vid.....6 thais were in the room....ALL were asleep....that sums it up for Thais being able to drive.....

the festivities have got out of hand big time. It is just a stupid time of year, where all Thais think that every other person likes TO GET WET.....and I AM NOT ONE OF THEM.....if I want to get wet I go in the pool or the sea !!!
