  1. in response to truth in labeling,

"immaterial to me whether it was genuine cod- for me the taste is more important than the name"

and, for many other TV Forum members, price and quantity (portions) are more important than taste or in knowing just exactly what you are eating.

these standards of measurement are very common among our TVF food critics and restaurant recommends. this leaves this reader with a less than complete report every time.

  2. I find the fish and chips at Sunee's to be good.

I do too and also at The Cathouse. Unfortunately, neither place has malt vinegar available and - to me - it is not real English-style fish and chips without it.

You'd think they would invest in a bottle.

Sunee's and The Cathouse. Where are these places?

What kind of fish are we talking about? Thanks!

  3. Cod in good batter you say, was that the basic fish and chips from the menu.

I have asked the Thai staff, in Thai, at both Kelly's (Meechok) and the Irish Pub what is the fish you serve as fish and chips?

The answer is "Dory". No , my friends, this is not the "John Dory" North Atlantic fish you might know in England, nor is it cod or haddock, nor is it an ocean fish of any kind.

It's a river fish. A Mekong catfish. Pangasius fish. Panga fish. Dory Panga. John Dory Panga.

If they were to serve cod, it would be pricey. and delicious.

    Enjoy!

  4. Hes good, i sometimes get 3x chips, definitely fills me up and i need to get 3-4x thai meal servings to fill up (ex powerlifter) so 180baht aint too bad

Half the fun is riding the pushie around and trying to hunt him down

We've discussed this enterprising fellow months ago. He sells an unidentified fish (and chips) for 50 baht. His patrons say the fish is tasty, affordable, and filling. I guess that's all that matters . . . . except the identity of the fish ("white fish").

    It's Mekong catfish. Pangasius. Panga.

More info in Bangkok Post (September 28, 2012) and elsewhere.

  5. This is as much Chiang Mai related as a boot in the bawz

Chiang Mai expats may reside in Chiang Mai, but their interests, their hobbies, their politics may go way beyond the city's boundaries.

Just take a look at the topics discussed on this forum, Sharktooth, and you'll see that many topics are not related to the city of Chiang Mai, but rather to the kaleidoscope of personal interests of individual expats in Chiang Mai.

    Enjoy life!

  6. For past 14 weeks, I have been enjoying NFL Football via downloaded high-quality high-definition video.

Just learned that The Pirate Bay(TPB) website is down, and may not go up again.

Can someone please recommend a good alternative?

    Thank you!

  7. E visa now accepted for Mandalay.

I just paid 7,200baht return for travel during January and couldn't see anything at the price you mention.

    Manseer,

Do you have a Thailand Non-Immigrant Visa? You now have a Myanmar eVisa, correct? Point of entry: Mandalay International Airport.

    Nice work!

  8. E visa now accepted for Mandalay.

I just paid 7,200baht return for travel during January and couldn't see anything at the price you mention.

please check out the Bangkok Airways website for current fares.

what is an "E Visa" (Education/Teacher Visa?)

  9. like to see Mandalay? Here's what I l learned at a local tour agency today.

from Chiang Mai, Bangkok Airways flies to Mandalay three days a week. Mandalay to Chiang Mai too!

It's only a one and one-half hour flight, direct (no stopovers). Fares start at about 1,600 baht, each way.

Visa to Myanmar (Burma) costs 2,800 baht and takes a week. This travel agency offers this service.

if, however, you hold a Thailand Non-Immigrant Visa (Retirement, Married, etc.), and reside in Chiang Mai, the Myanmar visa must be obtained in Bangkok. Uggghhhh!

    Anyone have another option?

  10. Here is one. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/717362-looking-for-a-podiatrist-recommendation/

If you simply search the TV forum ("foot doctor" or "podiatrist") there are many more posts listed.

There are no podiatrists (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine DPM) in Thailand, no medical schools of podiatric medicine, no programs within medical school in Thailand.

There are orthopedic surgeons throughout Thailand.

If you are taking blood pressure meds such as amlodipine, your feet will swell. very common side effect..

  11. It's calendar time. Years ago; Thailand put out some lovely calendars featuring 12 absolutely beautiful Thai ladies. I recall Saeng Som whiskey sponsoring one very nice calendar.

Any idea where to find such calendars this year?

  12. If you get a copy of City Life Magazine they devote a page to useful numbers, emergencies and Hospital numbers.

The December issue should be available in the next few days.Far too many numbers to list here.

    Fire no is 199, RAM emergency 053 224 861,they have 2 "Heart" vans for emergencies.Police 053 814 313-4,Accident 1193 etc etc.

just returned from Chiang Mai Ram Hospital, where I checked out the "heart vans" and Information Desk.

The vans are parked outside the Emergency Room entrance. Numbers shown on the vans are 053-920-300 (Mobile CCU)

    and 053-895-001 (Hotline).

At the Information Desk (Counter No. 7), the young lady at the desk did not know the number for emergency (ambulance),

but dialed the operator. According to the operator, 053-895-551.

When the Info Desk clerk was asked to explain the discrepancy, she smiled and replied that I could use either number.

    Confused? Me too!

  13. for Hang Dong District residents, what is phone number for police and emergencies? Is "191" best?

fire emergencies? will Chiang Mai Fire respond to Hang Dong call, or need to call HD Fire Station?

medical emergency (such as heart attack) and need ambulance to Chiang Mai Ram. call hospital?

    Thanks.

  14. So has Sripat got the robot, will cost about $17,000 US for the pleasure, not! But this is prostatectomy, not HIFU,

Alot of resistance my many doctors to HIFU - despite widespread use in Europe and USA.

Thanks for the heads up on Samitivej.

    Pachoderm,

Do prostate patients need a biopsy before HIFU and after HIFU (to determine progress)? How many HIFU treatments generally required?

Why do many doctors "resist" using? Not effective? Not a good alternative to surgery?

Robotic surgery is about $17K (550K baht). About 3 times more expensive than a standard "open" prostatectomy, I would guess.

Agonizing decisions for patient, treatment vs surgery, open surgery vs robotic surgery, etc.

  15. http://www.chiangmairam.com/NEW%20CMR/Physician%20Eng/Ophthalmology%20Clinic%20Eng%20.html

These are the Ophthalmologysts in RAM-Chiang Mai.

    Dr. Paradee is good.

But take care for their (glaucoma) prescriptions. I.e. for Xalatan-eye-drops. One 2.5 ml botte ~2.250 Baht, in a Central pharmacy you'll get 3 bottles for the same price.

I understand that Xalatan (generic: Latanoprost) requires refrigeration while in storage. Once opened, 2.5 bottle is good for 30 days without refrigeration.

Lumigan eye drops do the same job, no refrigeration needed, 490 baht per bottle.

Hope Xalatan is maintaining good eye pressures for you!

BTW, hospital pharmacy prices are notoriously inflated - as much as 300%
