  1. for hard-to-find veins, there's a vein detector device which uses LED light to illuminate the veins in your arm.

I'm told this device is used in some Chiang Mai hospitals and clinics. Can anybody confirm this?

    Thanks.

  2. where do I find a good Wi-Fi Fiber Optic router for my 3BB Fiber (30/3) package in Chiang Mai?

The one I was provided by 3BB does not seem to be up to the task'

If you can, please tell me the shop, the model, the price. Many thanks!

    <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

You got 10mb fiber optic ? I thought the minimum was 30mb ? and yes you should get better quality. I have changed from 16/1 to 30/3 and i notice the difference. But there are still problems at times even with a good router.

you're right - it's 30/3. my mistake. you're getting better quality - what kind of bitrate streaming? Better than 1300 Kbps? (That seems to be my best.)

Does 3BB "cap" or "throttle" the stream? I notice my download speed of torrents is VERY fast.

Disappointed to see that my new 3BB Fiber (30/3) is not providing me with a smoother and better streaming rate than my 5/1 Premier package. I do get a decent picture from my Slingbox, but it's frequent stop and stutter (not smooth and steady) and tops out at about 800 Kbps streaming. Premier delivered 1200 Kbps streaming rate at a fairly steady and smooth rate. These rates were noted while no other downloads going on and various times of the day.

As I recall, 3BB told me the Premier was designed for users who stream from servers located outside Thailand, in USA. That sounded good.

I now suspect that 3BB has NOT included this feature in its Fiber package. Instead, I think 3BB has capped the streaming speed (bandwidth) from outside servers.

I will ask 3BB to acknowledge. Any users see the same problem?

I still get full speeds.. did you change the modem already.. the old one is crap.. Though I cant garantee much. I do when i got the new modem it improved stuff.

I don't stream but use skype a lot and even then it sometimes isnt great.. but that could be on the other side too.

  5. Thank you all for the good advice.

Should I expect a better stream rate after changing from 3BB Premier to 3BB fiber?

Or does the faster download speed (5MB to 10MB) have no effect on the streaming rate?

Is the limiting factor the bandwidth provided by 3BB? How does one calculate bandwidth?

    Thanks again.

  6. Just switched from 3BB Premier cable service to the 3BB Fiber lines. Twice as fast, half the price!

One disappointment, however. The router provided by 3BB is wi-fi, but not a good one. My old broadband router worked fine with my smart phone throughout the house. This new fiber wi-fi router is weak. The installer told me I'll need a booster antenna if I want to use it with my phone, and he estimated the cost to be about two thousand baht - ouch!!!

3BB requires advance payment of 6 months for Farangs (1,200 X 6 = 7,200), plus a 2,000 baht deposit for the (inferior) modem. I'm heading for Pantip Plaza to compare prices of Fiber Wi-Fi modems - maybe return the 3BB modem (2,000 baht refund) and buy my own modem.

Please explain to a technically-challenged computer user -

I use Slingbox to stream tv programs to my computer. I see that picture quality is a function of bandwidth and streaming rate (Kbps). I stream at 1000-1200 Kbps and enjoy a nice, clear picture. The fiber connection streams at a slightly higher rate (1300 Kbps), despite the much higher speeds. I'm told that I cannot expect a better streaming rate here in Chiang Mai because 3BB and other providers limit the bandwidth, and thereby limit the streaming speed.

Are there ways to increase bandwidth?

Any tips on how to resolve the wi-fi in my house? Recommended products?

    Thanks!

  7. Ate there this weekend with a group of friends. What a wonderful restaurant -- you would have thought they'd been open for weeks not a few minutes! The atmosphere is great as is the food.

Come on, Dave, we need restaurant options like this in Maya Mall. Do you know what it's like to go see a movie there and have to eat dinner at the little restaurant in the Rim Ping grocery store? That's NOT an evening out! There's no place to get a good meal at Maya Mall and now we hear you're not coming to Maya. Why do people with cars get to have all the fun of having a night out -- movie and dinner. How about those of us who want to walk down the street for an evening like that?

any new developments on the proposed bus shuttle from inner city to Promenada Mall?

  8. Yep, one recalls post flood coke light drought. Actually had a Diet Pepsi today. Between, DP , light and zero Coke Light is the least "sweet", and my fave. Not everyday but keep it down to one can two max.

Does anywhere have soda water or any sparking mineral water in a can? For picnic or hiking use.

Diet Pepsi in Thailand? I don't think so. Where did you buy in Chiang Mai? I think you mean Pepsi Max, right?

  9. The retirement extensions (and any other extension) has been 1,900 baht for quite a few years.

Single re-entry permit is 1,000 baht, multiple is 3,600 baht (maybe 3,800 baht), so you have to be leaving Thailand at least 4 times in a year to make it worthwhile.

One other item to consider - Assist Thai Visa Services will do all this for you for a fee of 5,500 baht.

For some, it is worth it. For others, it is much too expensive. Your call.

  10. I do not think it is out of business....A while ago, dining at Miguel's (Mike's in Spanish), a well known Mexican Restaurant, the new owner told me that the original owner of his restaurant and of Mike's Hamburger is a Canadian guy named Mike who likes to creates successful business and resell it. May be true.

Made a big mistake in re-visiting Miguel's Mexican Restaurant in Nong Hoi (on old road to Lamphun). Discovered that it's no longer Miguel's, but rather "Tex-Mex" Restaurant, and the food and service are bad, very bad.

    Who are the new owners?

  11. I use SlingBox to stream USA television programs, and need a streaming rate of at least 800 Kbps to get a clear picture.

Is my Internet Service Provider (3BB) controlling/throttling the stream speed?

Last few mornings, I cannot get a picture at all - only 168Kbps.

Tested download speed: 4.8; upload:. 87, ping: 37.

Anyone else having similar problems? Is it 3BB?

If I call 3BB Customer Service, what do I need from them?

Last week, same problem (in morning). Problem corrected by evening time.

(Last night, my streaming rate was 1284 Kbps, with a crystal clear picture!)

Can someone explain what's going on, and what action I need to take? Thanks

  13. a good fish and chips starts with the right fish - firm and flakey. Atlantic Cod, Haddock, Grouper, Parrot Fish are all good.

Dory Fish, Pangas, Mekong Catfish are mushy - like mushy peas. No amount of batter can disguise the fish therein.

I'm interested in reviews that identify the fish - right up front.. The taste, the portion size, the price can come later (for me).

Where can I find a nice Atlantic Cod fish and chips in Chiang Mai?

  14. In researching prices posted on the Internet, I see that the 32GB Wi-fi model sells for 16,900 baht (Pantip Plaza).

This is a very competitive price - on $30 more than Best Buy in the USA.

Anybody found a better price in Chiang Mai, or a better mini I-Pad?

Like to read your input. Thanks!

  15. Amazing technology! Thank you for sharing.

I wish to suggest that the governor of Chiang Mai deploy drones to video the fires that are burning in the hills. Government officials tell us the burning is happening in remote areas where they cannot investigate and enforce the law. Use drone videos to pinpoint the "hotspots," and then send in the Border Patrol Police and the Pha Mueang Task Force (Thai Army) to conduct "knock and talk" operations in target villages.

Something needs to be done NOW - before we all choke to death!

  16. Just discovered a steady source for Pepsi Max (550 ml plastic bottle) in Hang Dong area. It's a 7-11 store along Irrigation Canal Road (Route 121). In same section as Empress Dental Care Clinic and Doi Chang Coffee Shop. If you order by case (24 bottles) 3-4 days in advance, it will be ready for you to pick up.

What ever happened to the new Pepsi production schedules at the new factory and the new distribution arrangement?

Looks like Pepsi was muscled out of the market by the dreaded "Est" brown water!!
