  1. Kelly's has the best fish and chips ....that I have experienced so far.

    Slippery Lobster -

Please identify the fish used in Kelly's Fish & Chips.

    Where is Kelly's located? Thanks.

Hi Bob, Its located in Meechok Plaza, on Mae Jo Road,1001,

enter the Plaza ,go straight past McDonalds, its about the

3rd or 4th shophouse from the end on the right hand side.

The fish and chips are the best in Chiang Mai (i think),nice

crispy batter, available 3 different sizes, small is enough for

me,the fish is either Talapia or catfish, which is the norm here,

Cod or Haddock would be nice ,but prices would be prohibitive,

back in the UK they are having to use Vietnamese catfish.

    regards Worgeordie

Plenty of Vietnamese catfish available in Thailand, it's called Pangasius. After you have seen a docu about how they are farmed, you not gonna buy them ever again.

Makro had a good alternative, called Alaska pollock, but since the richest man from Thailand has taken over Siam Makro, it's all replaced by the cheap shit Pangasius.

Worgeordie is spot-on with the Pangasius. Siam Makro (and throughout Thailand) it's also called "Pangasius Dory" - not the John Dory fish that is popular in England. Kelly's and Dee's and Coach's and dozens of other Fish and Chips plates around Chiang Mai (except Pun Pun) use this cheap and plentiful "white fish" rather than the more expensive Atlantic Cod, Grouper, Haddock, Pollock, etc.). Sadly, TV Forum customers and reviewers never mention the fish type, only that it's "cheap" and "filling," and there's "plenty of chips".

Atlantic Cod is imported frozen and sold in Rimping. I'd pay 150-200 baht for that fish in a nice batter, if it was on the menu.

  2. yum, looks good!

What kind of fish do you use? Pangas Dory?

Thanks for the question MkB, but in all honesty I can't give you an answer other than delicious.

We have used the , what looks like a redfish , from the market, and locally and phonetically it sounds like "toptim".

If someone has a firmer answer , out there, I would be happy to hear it.

I am not a great fish lover, but I have to honestly tell you, this fish has really changed my opinion on fishy food.

We buy them whole and alive and my Pranee brings them home and works her magic on them.

We also use them on the dinner, we bill as our Garlic Fish, and I have to say that is great. The favorable comments we get from people who say they are not fish lovers , gives me confidence to back up my own taste buds.

Will check to see if I have a pic of that dinner.

ปลาทับทิม pla thap-thim is a popular fresh water fish in Chiang Mai. Sometimes called "Ruby Fish," or "Pomegranate Fish."

Firm and flakey, not mushy. Nice for fish and chips. Winnie the Kwai reports that Tab Tim is the genetically engineered Frankenfish variety of Tilapia (pla-nin) that's bigger and pinkish in color, a species copyrighted by the CP Group.

  3. The estimated cost of building a home in Chiang Mai is reported to range from 5,000-20,000 baht per square meter, depending upon the quality of materials used. For this discussion, let's say 15,000 Thai baht per square meter. Calculations often use the phrase "shell only," and include the sub-floor (but not hardwood flooring), walls (plastered and painted), plumbing (but not sinks, toilets, tubs, or showers), electrical wiring (but no lighting fixtures), kitchen (but no sinks, countertops or cabinets), windows (but no metal security bars), doors, and a roof of standard tiles on a steel frame.

The overall floor area (in square meters) include bedrooms, bathrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen, closets, porches, patios, carports, basements, etc. but not all of these spaces are considered to be the "living area". A 300-sq meter structure, for example, might include only 200 square meters of "living area" and, at 15K per sq meter, it will cost an estimated 4.5 million baht to build.

A Chiang Mai architect may charge 5% or 7% or 10% (or more) to design such a home. If 7% is typical, that's 315,000 baht for the architect's house plan. The owner is provided with a book of plans, while the builder uses the larger format "blueprints" and a detailed "BOQ" list of the materials and quantities specified in the building contact.

Do I have this right? Comments and corrections are most welcome!

  4.

The original homeland of Daic people or Tai-Kadai speakers is in Guangxi and Guangdong in south eastern China. Note that not all Tai-Kadai speakers are of Tai-Kadai ethnic since some ethnic do live among the Tai-Kadai speakers there for the infuences is high. To anyone who is interested on this might want to search up on the internet for more informations, please look up at Daic/Tai-Kadai/Zhuang/BaiYue or hundred Yue. You should make connections with these. And if you want to look up further you will come across with Liangzhu culture.
    Hope this help.

Linguistic studies would suggest China as the original homeland of the T'ai people, and there is no hard evidence to prove otherwise.

Before the 6th century BC when the Chinese first recorded their existence, all is conjecture.  Nobody knows.

The proto-history of Southeast Asian races is very well summed-up in D.G.E.Hall's  A History of South-East Asia [St. Martin's Press].

According to Hall, the theory that the T'ai originally came from Central Asia was put forward by westerners in the 19th century, based on racial similarities with other Central Asian peoples and native Americans, who are believed to have originated there as well.

That seems to be the most plausible explanation; at least until compelling evidence turns up to contradict it.

    Thanks for your reply.

Dr James Chamberlain (Tai Linguistics) cites linguistic evidence that the T'ai originated in Northern Vietnam.

Do Thai schools still teach that the Thai originated in the Nan Chao Kingdom of Yunnan Province?

  5. My experience (2 months ago) was terrible. Lousy food, bad service. Never returned. Previous management was decent. Too bad!

  6. I don't care what's in dukes pepperoni....its an excellent pizza!

Agreed, We like the Greek pizza very much, but sometimes you want a pepperoni amercain style

and need to know where to look. .

A popular brand of pepperoni in USA is Hormel pepperoni. Great taste! Tried to get Rimping to import, but no luck, so I often bring a couple of sticks myself and add to a take-out pizza to eat at home. Could never find "real" USA pepperoni in Chiang Mai. Thai-German pepperoni just isn't same - it's salami (ugghhhh!

  7. Plugged my usage in and it was spot on with my bill within a few satang (round off). So looks like an accurate and reliable source.

great! I must have entered wrong number of units when I tried it.

I don't think my PEA office (Hang Dong) website provides any such page (Thai or English) for its customers.

Much more detail than the PEA bill I get in my box each month.

    Thanks, Tywais!

  8. I've had the frozen yogurt at the place by the Suriwong book store and I think it's great. I talked to the owner once when he had a place at Promenada and he says he uses real yogurt - not the commercial mixes - to make his stuff. Worth seeking out.

Sounds good! Can you provide more details/directions on the location? (. . . "by the Suriwong Books store" . . . )

    Thanks.

  9. Is there a Chiang Mai Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) web page where a customer can itemize the various charges on his electricity bill, particularly the 3-tier rates used by PEA?

I did find such a page for the MEA (Metropolitan Electricity Authority), but the residential rates are not the same.

    Thanks!

  10. Yes, the daytime taxi operates whenever there are incoming flights, although here lately the standard fare seems to be 150 baht.

But be aware that at night they charge an extortionate 500 baht!!

Anyone who can confirm the rate for a taxi at night from the airport is 500 Baht?

    180 baht, 2 passengers to Hang Dong in a taxi-van. 11pm. Problem?

  11. Well at last the overwhelming threat to national security has apparently subsided! BBC, CNN, CNBC & Bloomberg are back on our screens.

what's really missing is MSNBC - great political analysis and comment on U.S. and international issues - and the perfect antidote for the Fox venom!

  12. I believe we're talking about "shelled" (no shells) walnuts. Anybody know how to say this in Thai? And where to find in Chiang Mai? Thanks!

  13. American cuti zens cab pay US$50 (1,500B) fee at U.S. Consulate in Chiang Mai. Not necessary if you're registered in a Thai household (yellow booklet). Need to document residence to renew/extend visa each year.

Likewise, need to document income each year, $50 fee at American Consulate. are there alternative ways to satisfy these requirements at Thai Immigration?
