Thai police detain man over death of Swiss tourist
Caldera replied to Jonathan Fairfield's topic in Phuket News
I'm a bit surprised to see some of the responses here. They had him on CCTV, so they knew who to look for and who to question. Reportedly he's the son of a former village headman with a drug problem. Contrary to earlier reports, they didn't just grab the nearest migrant worker. I'm inclined to say this might have been decent police work, and I'm very critical of the police here in general. But let's see what further details will emerge.- 149 replies

Two nasal spray COVID-19 vaccines under development by Thailand’s BIOTEC
Caldera replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I'm somewhat suspicious of a vaccine that the best they can say about seems to be, "the mice didn't die". -
For what it's worth, the 7/11 I use most of the time looked much improved today. Plenty of items that had run out have been replenished since my previous visit two days ago.

In practical terms, that simply means that you prefer to have your body deal with a novel coronavirus it isn't familiar with, if and when you get infected. Considering how virulent recent strains are, it's almost inevitable that you subject your body to one (by choice) or the other (by accident) in due course. I think the "experimental vaccine" is at the very least safer than facing the real thing unprepared, but as they say, up to you!

The arrival numbers were probably correct, but when you replace someone from a high income country holidaying in Thailand for 2-3 weeks with a Malaysian popping across the border for a weekend or a Chinese zero dollar group tour participant staying for 4-5 days, revenue suffers despite higher arrival numbers.

Must Read Thailand reports record 21,838 new coronavirus cases and 212 deaths

Separating little children from their parents just for Covid isolation is a crime against humanity. I haven't heard of any other country doing that. -

As long as they stubbornly refuse to include those found positive via rapid antigen tests in their daily tally, that number is pretty much meaningless. There's not enough proactive testing being done, and positivity rates are incredibly high. On the bright side, in communities that currently have 20% positivity rate, infections cannot continue to double many more times, so they will peak within weeks. Herd immunity Thai-style, the hard way. -
That typically happens when someone rents an apartment, not a condo or a house. Or in other words, with low end rentals. Which makes me doubt that the advice you give is very practical. How many of those who rent an apartment could afford to buy their own high efficiency a/c? How many apartment landlords would allow you to install your own a/c?

How to print PDF file received on smartphone SMS
Caldera replied to scorecard's topic in IT and Computers
That should work, but in case there's no share symbol in your SMS app, you can click on the PDF file to open it in the PDF viewer first. From there, you will definitely have the option to share it. -
There's certainly a newly rediscovered appreciation for farang dollars to be found in Thailand.

Thailand falls to bottom of Nikkei Asia’s COVID-19 Recovery Index
Caldera replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Hasn't this index proven to be a useless indicator, precisely because Thailand used to be at the top? A new variant could appear anytime, and it's anyone's guess where it strikes hardest. -
How to print PDF file received on smartphone SMS
Caldera replied to scorecard's topic in IT and Computers
Assuming that the printer is connected to your PC, then emailing the PDF to yourself from your phone and opening the email on your PC is a good option. My printer has WiFi and there's an app that I could install on my phone to print images and PDFs directly. -
Exactly one billion US dollars. Seriously though, what do you want to hear?

A Bible verse in a Pattaya thread, thank Dog Almighty that I lived to see the day!

As far as tourism in Thailand is concerned, I think this year is pretty much toast. So I'm going to say a meaningful reopening of Pattaya won't happen before next year. Hopefully early next year, but it's too early to predict that.

Food supply reduced amid COVID spread at processing plants
Caldera replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
The appalling working conditions in food production, ideal for Covid to spread among workers... So now we have another problem on our hands at the same time, that sucks. -
For the benefit of others who might be in the same situation some time soon, I recently saw an advertisement from Grab for taxi services during curfew hours, specifically to travel to the airport or to a hospital. That's what I'd use in order not to bother anyone else to leave their home during curfew to give me a ride.

Hasn't the Minister of Justice heard that spreading fake news is unlawful? He seems to be promoting a "miracle cure" like a classic snake oil salesman, nothing more and nothing less. -
Swiss tourist dead, believed raped, murdered in Phuket Sandbox
Caldera replied to Jonathan Fairfield's topic in Phuket News
RIP to the lady and my condolences to her family and friends. Horrible news. That's a major blow to "Safe and Trusted Thailand", to have a murdered tourist on their hands after merely a month and among a group of just about 15,000 tourists in total. If all the Burmese migrant workers are "bubbled and sealed", they might actually have to arrest a Thai for this crime this time around. Hopefully they'll make a sincere effort to find the real perpetrator(s)..
