My condolences to all involved and their families. What I found very sad was the situation where a dedicated medical team (ambulance) transporting and caring for the pregnant lady to give birth in hospital was suddenly "taken out" by the pickup - it must have been very traumatic, especially for the unborn baby's father. I lived in Thailand and now reside in Cambodia (Siem ReaP). IMO the Khmer people are much friendlier and much more helpful than the Thais. During my travels, and pre-Junta, I also found the Burmese people charming and very friendly. The Laotians and Vietnamese not so friendly.

Yes indeed, and not just Thai Boxing. Sadly it is a worldwide problem in many different sports, as I know very well. For over 25 years I was a qualified football (soccer) referee registered with the English Football Association. Although never physically abused, other than being spat at and a few pushes, the verbal and mental abuse was at times horrendous eg. phone calls to my house and scathing media reports, not about my ability to referee but the result of the game and blaming me - just as above with the Thai boxing referee. I could go on at length, but I will end with one incident where myself and my 2 assistant referees (linesmen in those days) had an armed police escort off the pitch after an U-18 International Youth Match between a Brazilian team and a Ugandan team. At the final whistle, the Brazilian team lost and all hell let loose with people running onto the pitch from all directions. Fortunately Brazilian Police Officers were on site and they escorted us back to the dressing room and eventually into our minibus. The spectators anger, I did not keep adding on extra time for the Brazillians to score!!!

From my time with the Thai Tourist Police, I believe an arrest warrant/court order is requird to bring an individual to the police station for questioning in relation to a crime (e.g. for fraud etc.) For street/bar brawls, as we have read about recently in Pattaya and Phuket, arrest warrants are not required, the perpetrators can be arrested on site and taken in for processing. In the UK, Citizens have the power of arrest known as "Citizens Arrest", but it is rarely used with people leaving it to the Police:- You can make an arrest if the suspect is actually committing the offence or if you reasonably suspect them of committing it, or when the offence has been committed and you reasonably suspect them of having committed it. There is no specific wording to use when making a citizens arrest.
