Cumbria couple relocates to Thailand, goes off-grid
Burma Bill replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Whatever the adverse, and in many cases jealous, comments on AN, congratulations on achieving your ambition. IMO, you have chosen a very pleasant picturesque area of Isaan in Thailand to live in. The cost of living will be less expensive than "rip off" Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket etc. etc. down south. I used to live not so faraway in Phu Wiang, Khon Kaen Province before moving to Cambodia. Enjoy your new life. -

Thai military chief disclaims use of Thailand arsenals in Myanmar
Burma Bill replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I tend to agree with him. In recent times, much of the military equipment used by the Resistance fighters has come from the Burmese Tatmadaw itself! Reference: Operation 1027 has brought new energy to the anti-coup movement as resistance fighters take over key military outposts and capture territory around the country. Images shared online show fighters posing victoriously with weapons, ammunition and heavy artillery. https://observers.france24.com/en/asia-pacific/20231220-unprecedented-weapons-seizures-in-myanmar-boost-anti-junta-resistance-morale Picture of weapons and ammunition captured from the Tatmadaw in recent defeats. https://www.irrawaddy.com/news/burma/more-myanmar-junta-bases-fall-in-shan-fighting-mndaa.html#google_vignette Over many years, there has always been a clandestine supply of weapons from the Drug Lords to the resistance groups to "protect their interests" -
Udon Thani airport immigration
Burma Bill replied to thaiasia's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
The two immigration desks at Khon Kaen's International Departure Lounge were only for Air Asia's "Fly Thru" passengers. I regularly flew with Air Asia from KKC to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Burma. (pre-covid). Very convenient as one by-passed immigration in DMK. I believe this arrangement still exists. Baggage checked in at KKC collected at destination. Again, no involvement with luggage at DMK. Technically, one departed Thailand at Khon Kaen and was in transit at DMK. Air Asia ground staff at DMK escorted passengers from domestic arrivals to international departures with no immigration involved. To my knowledge Udon Thani Airport does not offer this facility. Just a few days ago I returned home to Siem Reap (Cambodia) from Chiang Mai with Air Asia's "Fly-Thru" service. Immigration at CNX, in transit at DMK for flight to SAI. -

Thailand should open its door to young Myanmar refugees
Burma Bill replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Although an abhorrent decision by the Junta to conscript youngsters into the terrorist Tatmadaw, it could be a blessing in disguise if one of the conscriptees gets an opportunity to assassinate his/her commanding officers sparking a rebellion! -

Thai customs halt import of Chinese elephant-patterned trousers
Burma Bill replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
With respect, no! Much of the better quality clothing is made in Thailand and is more expensive than the local mass produced Cambodian and Chinese garments. I buy Thai made sports shirts and trousers in Siem Reap imported from Thailand. -
Tourism Concerns Spark Plea for Alcohol Sales Law Change

What law?? When I lived in Thailand, out in rural sugarcane country, there were no time restrictions as the "Mom & Pop" shops were able to oblige any time - and probably still do! -
Elderly Activists Resume Anti-Thaksin Protest Outside Government House
Burma Bill replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
A month. I hope they have plans for their personal hygiene! -
Poor man - so very sad. RIP and condolences to your family. Now 80, I have mobility problems and on several occasions I find myself having to struggle up flights of steps where there are no handrails (eg from street level into Malls) not only in Thailand but here in Cambodia as well. However, when it comes to flying, as a frequent flyer with Air Asia, the airline's free wheelchair service is excellent - from check-in desk to cabin door (if booked in advance with ticket).

Elderly Activists Resume Anti-Thaksin Protest Outside Government House

Have they also planned for toilets, showers and laundry facilities to avoid this???? -
Amazing Thailand - picture from The Nation (3/2/24) showing first day of new numbering system. A bus arrives with the new number (B44) with the destinations pasted onto the side of the bus!! Imagine the delay in departure (especially during rush hours) whilst all the passengers try to check the list before boarding! I wonder if new timetables with amendments were also released on the same day and posted at bus stops - I bet not!!! Typical Thai bureaucracy and stupidity.

Thailand’s rice exports expected to drop 14.4% amid global competition
Burma Bill replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I am not surprised when Thai Hom Mali rice was knocked from top to fourth spot by Vietnamese and Cambodian Fragrant rice, also Indian Basmati rice. Thai rice farmers, pull your socks up and produce better quality rice!! For reference (wikipedia): In 2023, Cambodia exported more than 656,000 tons of milled rice worth $466 million, marking a three percent growth in volume and 13 percent in value compared with 2022. Revenue in the (Cambodian) Rice market amounts to US$0.42bn in 2024. The market is expected to grow annually by 6.48% (CAGR 2024-2028) -
Thai Airways sues over passenger’s flight diversion criticism
Burma Bill replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
If the passenger lives outside Thailand, possibly in Australia, surely it would be almost impossible for THAI to successfully sue the passenger? (unless the Thai authorities issue an Interpol Red Notice) I stopped flying with THAI many years ago when I discovered a less expensive and better direct service between London (LHR) and Bangkok with EVA Air. -
Please excuse any ignorance on my part, but under Thai laws regarding freehold property, surely such a large mansion would never be 100% yours unlessyou set up a company? wikipedia: Thai freehold ownership gives you indefinite ownership of a property. The two types of freehold ownership include freehold in a condo unit and freehold through a Thai company acquisition. Thai Freehold – As a foreign national, you can own properties indirectly by using a Thai Limited Company.

New rail service linking Bangkok and Vientiane kicking off soon
Burma Bill replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
As the article states, there is already a service between Bangkok and Thanaleng in Laos via Nong Khai and across the Friendship Bridge. This new service is just a short extension from Thanaleng to the main railway station in Vientiane where passengers and freight have to change from metre (narrow) gauge SRT trains to the standard gauge HST to China (or vice versa). Freight containers will have to be lifted from narrow gauge to standard gauge bogies to continue their journey. Picture shows dual gauge railway where freight is being lifted from one gauge to the other. (stock photo) It will be many years before a standard gauge HST railway becomes operational between Bangkok and China.
