  1. I have noticed why do the street beggers only hassle the farang and tourist's is this because the Thai's will tell them to "sling there hook".

The funniest thing I've seen with the street beggar kids was in Nana Plaza, girl came up to a German guy and he said 'no I not give you money I buy you some food' and took her across the road to a BBQ stall where she proceeded to place around 300 baht of food on the barbi before he could stop her.

  2. Canadian activist Ashley Fruno, 20, crouches and confines herself in a cage in front of a KFC outlet in downtown Bangkok September 4, 2006. The PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) member from British Columbia is protesting what she says is the abusive treatment of chickens by the fast-food chain.

I know this has been a bit of a lads thread, but did she really think Thai people give a s--t about how a chicken ends up on a plate, I've lost count of the number of times my wifes uttered those immortal words 'oh look she's not going to die' and then procceed to saw thru the fully conscious chickens neck another couple of centimetres, not to mention the fully conscious pigs that are held down or up and stabbed thru the heart. Don't get me wrong I don't agree with it but thats Thai life. Hope she enjoys her bbq chicken and pork off the street stalls.

  3. No sure if this is the wrire section, but does anyone know who or where i can get an English letter converted to Thai

    Many Thanks

Don't know if this is any help, but theres a website called PARSIT which roughly translates English into Thai, never really tried it myself but might be worth a look at just do a google search

. Really what I'd like to know is whether teaching without a qualification in Thailand is a common occurrence.

and willingness to prepare your lessons for at least 15min before each and you are well on your way. Good luck. Susan

Whao! you have been a busy girl today haven't you. Firstly I'm not some backpacker who wants to make a few Baht to stay a little longer, I first came to this country in 1984 and have been with my wife for fourteen years, we run our own business and I teach voluntarily at our local school, so please don't use this thread to champion the grudge you have against the people who are happy doing what they are doing

  5. Thanks for the info, when you say Thai immigration is 14km from the border where do you get your passport stamped to re-enter, may seem a stupid question but i like to be sure about these things. About the cigarettes when me and the missus and a couple of thai friends went to Poi Pet for my first visa we bought a copuple of packs each from the touts on the Thai side, as we were going home on the main road out of the market we were flagged down by what looked like customs guys, when they seen the cigs they took us to the station after about half an hour of waiting they let us go, seems like theres a little scam going on with the touts and the customs.

Does it have any connection to 'media kids' or TEFL Int?

Don't think so and I can't see them on the not recommended list, they say their an International Language School I've just sent them an e-mail asking for more details. Really what I'd like to know is whether teaching without a qualification in Thailand is a common occurrence.

Thanks to both of you for the interest.

  7. Just need to ask for your opinions on this, I have recieved an offer of a job teaching English in Issan country without any qualifications actually came through one of my postings. I haven't responded yet don't even know where the school is exactly or what they are paying but I thought I'd ask you lot first for your comments.

    Thanks.

Thanks for the info, I need to get a one year type O multiple entry visa and the nearest place to get one is Penang, Contintal sounds a reasonable price, I've stayed at the Waldorf last time I was there and it was OK but 13 years is a long time so I wasn't sure what state it would be in. Worth checking out the air fare at that price as well.

  9. :o

Can anyone help me out here I need to go to Penang to renew my visa, whats the cost of the train fares one way and does anyone know of a decent cheap hotel, also are the agents who can proccess your visa reliable, been searching around the websites but can't find much on the fares and as it's been 13 years since I last went there for a visa it's probably a lot different now. I live in the wilds of Issan and travels agents don't seem to like answering e-mails.

  10. Hey guys,

has anybody worked with paid surveys or similar online jobs?

    Does it really pay off?

    Thanks :D

:o Registered with a few one lazy afternoon just out of curiosity, only one Globaltestmarket has ever sent me any surveys which is about five in the last six months and you need to complete about thirty to get your money out ,all the rest only ask you to keep your info updated. If your going to try it one suggestion have an interest on every topic on the enrolment form and give yourself a good job.

  11. Papa,

I think if you read the original post the doctor in Isan suggested to go to a better hospital in Bkk, maybe they didn't have a specialist for this kids problem and he only said maybe surgery, as for the 30bt scheme that's what you get 30bt worth. I'm sure you will forward a contribution

Excuse an outsider butting in but I live in Issan and have been to the local hospital quite a few times with the old man, your right in what you say pay 30 Baht and thats what you get. The wards are always full so the beds go into the corridors, if you want a bit of comfort it costs 400 Baht a night even my wife says if she ever gets sick take her to a city hospital. don't get me wrong they do there best but the facilities are just not there. :o

  12. CROSS-CULTURAL MARRIAGES

Foreign husbands pay off for Thais

She recalled that her daughter's marriage ceremony was a grand occasion admired by neighbours. Khamdee said she was not certain that if she had a Thai son-in-law, they would have had the chance to hold such a wedding ceremony in a five-star hotel.

    --The Nation 2006-08-27

I think she's got her phrases mixed up, it isn't 'not certain' the phrase is ' definitely not'

  13. Do you expats living in Isaan ever have any regrets.

I mean the people that have uprooted from thier native country and decided to live there permanently.

Do you ever feel homesick in a big way?

What about the food? How much do you miss the food from back home?

    The language?

    The Thai way?

If you have a Thai wife, has she forgotten any of the english ( or other ) that she used to be good at? Do you crave a chance to talk in your native tongue?

If you live in the sticks and miles away from other people or even a small village, what do you do?

I am only asking because I may be one of you in the future and probably a lot of others will have the same option.

:o I’m just a newcomer out here, been here for 18 months although I’ve been visiting our village from the U.K. with the wife for the last ten years to see her parents so I new what I was getting into. The only thing I used to hate was that it felt a bit like camping out no real place to put anything, when they cooked it used to be a balancing act where to put things, but now we have our own home with the leather 3 piece, 44inch TV, and a micro

feels just like home and it is home. The only thing I really miss is talking in English without having to think , only one who really speaks is my born again Geordie wife, weather takes a bit getting used to but you find if you just slow yourself down and stay in the shade it’s not so bad mind you after the initial 3000 baht electric bills for the air con you soon get used to fans. Food not a problem although very restricted on what farang food you can buy here thank God for 7/11s, but I just top up if I go to Bangkok. If you haven’t had much time out here I would definitely try before you buy as the man said, I think if you can get away with the heat, the lack of proper conversation ( oh how I miss a good manly natter now and again ) and having to watch Thai dramas with your wife every now and then and pretend to be interested ( they only have one script it seems between the whole Thai TV network) then go for it, I know it would take a lot to get me back to live amongst the scroungers and asylum seekers in the good old U.K. no thanks I think I'll stick with my beer, swingy seat, and the veranda on the evenings thats when you realise you've done the right thing.

  14. Hi there,

My Brother-in-law wants to learn English and asked me if i could help him . I wonder if there are some downloadable online resources, excercises, dialogues as Aid for learning English?

His current English Level is "almost" Beginner.....anybody have any advice/suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,

    rcm :o

:D Theres a site called thailandteacher.com got lots of stuff on there that may be of help to you.

  15. :o Can anyone give me a few pointers on what is needed to start teaching English, I live in the wilds of Issan country so theres no schools hear for diplomas would an on-line TEFL course be of any help and if so would it be good enough to secure a job. I've been teaching English at our local school for the experience for a few months and would like to try and make a few Baht, which would please the wife immensely.
