  1. Sort of weird hearing two replies referencing similarities to England and Australia. I'm from the US and can't imagine anything like this happening. I find it quite hard to believe this would happen in England or Australia either. Usually any kind of transportation service in the West is government regulated. But of course, I'm not from those countries so I could be wrong. Also, in the US, if there is a problem involving a taxi, it is usually the taxi driver being assaulted not the customer.

Anyways, this is quite pathetic that this happens here. Not only in Pattaya but also in Phuket it is a problem. Why can't the government start regulating the transportation industry and hold them accountable for the way they act. I guess that wouldn't work cause if they did stab someone they would probably just be moved to an inactive motorcycle post.

  2. Works sort of the same in the US. I have a prepaid Virgin Mobile number I use for when I go home. I have to add money to it every 90 days or my number is canceled. But they allow me to automatically add something like 10 dollars every 90 days from my credit card to keep the number alive. But as long as I add money to the account every 90 days, I still have access to the money put on the account prior to the 90 days. I think it just keeps people from buying a number and only using it temporarily; therefore, unused numbers are kept open for future customers.

  3. Back home I hate the neighborhood organizations because they seem to regulate the smallest details in the neighborhood. But this is a good example of why neighborhood organizations are a good idea. The neighbors should be mad because these houses lower the value of the other houses in the neighborhood. The colored houses are an eye sore and people don't want to buy property near eye sores.

  4. Hi all,

I haven't received my UBC magazine yet for February and I can't find the programming schedule on the new TrueVisions website. Does anybody know how to find the programming on their webpage? Thanks

  5. I was just thinking that also this may be a reason why the only people that report the crimes have lots of money on them. If you only lose a few thousand baht, its not worth being the next guy photographed for being robbed by bargirl that just so happens to turn out to be a guy too.

  6. I was reading another Pattaya crime thread and saw a pic of an Indian in his briefs. It seems that every time there is a crime that they put a pic of the victim in the paper. For a lot of the situations the victim is in during the crime (extracurricular activities and all), he probably doesn't want his identity known.

Why would anyone want to report a crime if they are going to be pictured? Do the victims have any right to anonymity?

  7. Does FIFA have any power to penalize the team for their actions in the ASEAN tournament? Do they have the authority to take points away from the team's World Cup qualifying? If so, something has to be done. With no punishment, it is just letting all the young footballers in ASEAN think that this behavior is acceptable.

  8. I don't think I've ever seen a sign stating, "Less than 10 items only." I've only seen the use of "fewer." I think the original poster of this remark made the mistake of "less" instead of "fewer", not the supermarkets. I don't know; maybe it is wrong in the UK.

  9. "Dave man, I must so do my dreads, the're like, wild man"

Absolutely hysterical. What decade are you living in? Did you know its 2007 and young people haven't talked that way since, oh, about 1987?

That is exactly how they talk. I'm a young man in my 20s and can't stand those that talk like that and they do. If they are gap year students, then they should be educated enough to speak proper English and not Ebonics or teenie bopper talk.

Also, some of them do smell, even as bad as a lot of the Frenchies I smell on the BTS. If they didn't smell, I wouldn't mind them, but for heck's sake, take a shower and use some deodorant. That's all.

  10. If you want to make sure it gets there you can use EMS (Thailand Post express service), but its almost the same price as FedEx. EMS documents to US is around 600B and FedEx is around 700B. The Thailand Post is handled by TNT going to the US. I've used both and never had any problems. My gf works for TNT and recommends the use of FedEx.

  11. A lot of universities in the US are starting to offer online degrees. My alma mater, Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, has a few options for online master degrees. It states on their site (www.kelley.iu.edu) that it is the only top 20 MBA school to offer a complete online degree. Another option would be Phoenix University. I'm not sure how well recognized or accepted their degrees are there. But if you do some research on the internet, you'll probably find a few online degrees. The problem may be finding ones that are totally online and doable while in Thailand.

  12. It seems that ESPN pretty much only plays the English Premier League. During the day it is just re-runs of past games. The only other programming that interests me is the NBA and NFL, but they are probably only of interests to Americans. From the TV poll, only about 25% of us are Americans.

My guess would be that ESPN and StarSports will be dropped and TrueVissions will make their own sports channel. This is just what it did with MTV and VH1. I'm guessing it was probably cheaper to buy the rights for the games than to pay ESPN/StarSports their rental fee.

I doubt they would drop NFL and NBA games, as these sports are popular with Thais (at least in the cities), due primarily to many Thais having been educated in the US. Also, both of these channels carry tennis, also popular locally. They did drop NHL hockey, but hockey really has never been popular in Thailand.

The article states that TrueVissions already bought the rights to the Grand Slams of tennis and to the PGA. I don't see anything left except NBA and NFL on TrueVissions that are big here. And I'm not sure if these two sports are big enough to keep ESPN and StarSports. TrueVissions is buying the rights to all the top watched sports so they won't need ESPN or StarSports anymore. NFL is already on SuperSports.

  14. You're being narrow minded again. :D

Try a real music club, you might like it.

Been here many many years, So I actually have tried them all, and I wouldnt call it real music. Blues seems a little old fashioned for the younger generation. Ive been there, done that, hated it. Do you have some kind of a problem with hip hop music? As its all the rage with the 'younger' people especially the Thai's at the moment :o

I'm part of the younger generation. I'm in my 20s and I can't stand hip hop. Not many of my friends back home can and don't find too many of my Thai friends that do either. Hip Hop is for teenie boppers and the like.

Oh yeah, except for the Beastie Boys. They rock and are the true heart and soul of hip hop.

  15. I think they should let unqualified people teach conversational English and leave the grammar to the Thai teachers. Most Thai schools just don't pay enough to attract qualified teachers. A qualified teacher will go to Korea or Japan where the money can be as high as the salary for a teacher in the US. I wouldn't trust qualified teachers teaching here on low salaries; they must have ulterior motives for working here. If Thailand wants qualified teachers to work here long-term, it needs to provide funding for their salaries. So far only the top private schools are offering competitive salaries with Korea and Japan. But anyways the criminal checks are good.

  16. You know I often wonder if because we are brought up in the west where the age to operate a motor bike is 18 (I think, not lived there for a long time) We automatically think that the 14 year old kids are too young to be in control of the vehicle but in places like Thailand and Indonesia young people live way out in the villages with the motorbike being the only way of getting to market to buy food and other essentials and carry Mum. I wonder if in places like here the permitted driving age should be lowered with maybe a sign on the bike saying something like "Young Person" rather like the "New Driver" signs on cars. A proper driver education program for the young folks coupled to strict enforcement of the helmet rule could cut these needless deaths down dramatically. Dunno too difficult I s'pose....

I don't think this is an excuse. Many places in the US that are the same as the Thai country, miles from the nearest store. The age is still 16 to drive in these areas of the US, except at least one state I know it is 15 due to this type of reason. But my point is that all over there are places in the middle of nowhere and they still don't let their kids drive. Its the parents' responsibility.

  17. I paid 3 months. First month and two months for deposit. I asked my gf when signing and she said it is not normal to pay the last month in advanced like it is in the US. The condo management agreed that it was the norm here too.

  18. I have a BKK Bank account. The one thing that bothers me with them is that I can't deposit my check at the small branches. I went to the small branch at Big C Metropolitan and wanted to deposit my check into my savings account. They said I would have to go to one of the big branches like Siam or Phayathai. I didn't understand what they were there for then. I asked them what they do at the location and they had no response for me.

  19. Does the OP think he can give us a quick summary? I made it a few paragraphs in and then scrolled down to see how long it was. Not worth my time. Just finished reading Private Dancer and it took me a year to get through its bullshit. Not gonna read someone's paraphrased version of it.

Anyhow, I see other posters have mentioned marriage so I guess that's the question. I say go for it. Sounds like a lovely girl.

  20. So is it legal to stab or physically harm your spouse then? If it was a bargirl, they would investigate, but not his wife? Family matters should be taken more seriously since those are the matters that usually end up in death more often. You more likely to be killed by a loved one than a stranger. Shouldn't the police know this and therefore make sure the situation is calm before sending the man back home for more cutlery lessons.
