  1. The Tourism Authority of Thailand warns international tourists of duty free allowance for tobacco and alcoholic beverage products while advising Thai travelers to choose registered tour operators.

TAT deputy governor Surapol Sawetseranee said the Excise Department has seized many tobacco products and alcoholic drinks from foreign travelers, and they have also faced considerable fines since the new duty free allowance requires them to carry a restricted amount of those items. As a result, complaints have been made to foreign embassies, and the image of Thailand is also affected.

Blah, so what is the duty free allowance for spirits, wine and tobacco? Funny that they go out with a 'warning' without including that little piece of information.

You are allowed 1 Litre of spirits and 200 cigarettes duty free.

Isn't that the old limit. The article mentions a new lower limit. I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time. Did think it was quite funny they took the time to warn the public to not exceed the limit without letting us know what the limit is.

  2. Interesting reading about the Thai gf's being questioned upon leaving the country. I've left the US plenty of times and have never once been questioned about it. I don't understand why Thailand would care if their own nationals left Thailand. My Thai gf and I went to Malaysia a couple months ago and they actually stamped her passport as departing Thailand. I wondered why. One should never have a stamp from their own country in their passport. It makes no sense.

Can anybody explain why the Thai immigration cares why these Thai girls leave the country or why they bother stamping their passports for departing?

    Thanks

  3. I've never understood how people control where the shit goes when you use the bum gun. I've always thought that the gun was unhygienic since the shit could spray anywhere with the high pressure of the water, therefore possibly leaving shit traces on the balls. Is it really easy to use the gun and make sure all shit goes straight in the water and only in the water? If not, I'll continue with the paper.

  4. I started checking out TV today and the replies aren't laid out one after another. Now they are in some crazy table type thingy at the bottom and I have to click on each reply I want to read. It is incredibly time consuming and not very easy to use.

How do I get it back to the way it was before? I can't stand reading it this way. Is there some button I can push to get it back to the standard version?

    Thanks

  5. I am moving back to the States in August and will be bringing my two little yorkies with me. This past week when I took them to the vet the vet stated that we have to get a certification letter for them. She said the certification of health will cost 30,000 baht per dog. Does anybody know if this is right?

From what I've read on about it from the US government site, all they need is proof the dogs have been vaccinated in English. Is this right?

If anybody has experience doing this, I would much appreciate learning about your experience. I really don't want to spend that much money since I have so many other expenses to incur during my relocation back to the States.

    Thank you.

  6. Was just on Patong the week of New Years and it was definatily overpacked. Took us about an hour to find a place to stay and saw many others with the same problem. This was the first time I've seen so many people there. Then again it was my first time during the peak of all peak times. I usually go during non-peak times and I can always find a place no problem. Just depends on when you go.

  7. I am moving back to the US in July or August. I am going to bring my Thai gf to live with me. I would like to get some views on what I should do from people who have already done it. The following are my two options:

    1. Get a 10 year visa and stay with me as a tourist and leave and come back after 6 month entry is up.

    - PROBLEM - I plan on marrying her in the next year or so and with this option I am afraid we may have a problem with visas in the future. I am also scared if we do get married while on a tourist visa she will have to change her status in Thailand and will have to stay there for some time alone. I have heard you can't change a tourist visa to a marriage visa while still in the US ( I may be wrong, if it is possible this would be the option for us, hands down).

    2. Get a K-1 visa and then change status after we get married.

    - PROBLEM - I heard it takes a while to get this visa. It may not be done by mid-July to early-August. I have to be back in the US in early-August and don't want her to have to come separately. If I send the forms to the US within the next couple of weeks, do you think she could get the visa by mid-July/early-August? ( I think this is the best option except I don't want to do it if it can't be done on time)

I would really appreciate any of your thoughts on either or both of my options.

    Thanks!!!

  8. Thanks!

I googled it and found some promising places. I just wanted to make sure I head to the right beach, which seems to be the same as you mentioned. I googled Batu Feringghi for last year and found what the internet said a lot different than what it was, so I am very appreciative to hear a response from someone who has been to Langkawi and has nothing to gain by selling me on a certain place.

  9. Hello!

I am planning a trip to Langkawi in March and would like to hear any suggestions on where to stay. I am looking to stay on the beach. I would prefer the beach to be fairly active so we are not bored at night and won't have to walk far for anything. For the hotel, we are looking for something around 100-150 Ringgits a night. It must have a/c and television.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

  10. I grew up around a number of half Korean, half American kids. One kid I didn't even know was half Korean until I met his mom when I was 15. I just thought he had darker skin or was Latino. I don't think it is a big deal in the US, probably because the whole country is pretty much mixed of more than one culture.

My gf says if your going to have mixed kids in Thailand that you have to have enough money to send them to a private school. If they go to a government school, they will be assumed to be the kids of a prostitute. This is just what she told me.

Luckily, no kids yet for me.

  11. I would take the advice of one of the previous posters and hire a private detective. They're pretty popular in Thailand since lots of guys go back home and want to check up on their girls. It may cost a couple or few hundred US$ but it will be a great investment. It will let you know if you can truly trust her.

Oh yeah, and to back up the others, I also have met guys that come and fall in love girls in only a few days and then end up screwed. One friend came and fell in love with a girl in Phuket. Not a bargirl as he said, but a hostess at that Crocodile club (I would consider bargirl). Went home and called her and chatted online for a longtime. She said she stopped the bar scene and all and finally moved back home. He talked to her family too. Finally, one time he called and her HUSBAND answered her phone and told him to stop contacting her. Broke his heart.

    An honest Husband....how unique.... :o

    Private detective

Typical American response.....dont trust, find someone else to check it out....this from a nation that goes to a shrink with a headache to find out why.

If you have enough doubt to hire a PI.....why are you in the relationship ??? Obviously there is something that is not right with the situation to cause a third party to become involved....save the cost of the PI and bail out of the relationship...

A relationship is about trust and respect !!!

You are quite right here. If you need a PI, then you are in trouble in the first place. But with a relationship based on 4 days, I would make an exception on this one.

To the OP, I'm heading down to Patong on Monday for the week. If you want to know how she takes to another fella, let me know where she hangs out. I'M FREE, and she'll never know you are checking up on her.

  13. Just find a place with UBC (the cable service here). There are always 4 NFL games a week. An early game, an afternoon game, the Sunday night game and MNF are always on. The first two on SuperSports and the latter two on ESPN.

As mentioned, very little college football. The championship game isn't even scheduled on UBC. College basketball is on ESPN quite often. It is mostly ACC though.

If anybody knows where to find the championship next week, please let me know.

    GO BIG TEN!!!

  14. Don't put a lot of money in a Thai bank with an ATM card. I keep little money in my BKK Bank account. Most of my money is in my US accounts. They are both insured. Any problems, the bank fixes it. My sister visited Bali and got her card copied and just had to show the purchases were made when she wasn't in the location of the purchases. She wasn't charged. Visa will also insure any transaction of a check card.

Main thing: don't put large sums of money in Thai banks with ATM card. Oh yeah, don't put more money than you have to in a Thai bank. With a foreign country, there is always the chance of expropriation. Unlikely, but might as well not chance it especially with a country having coups every 5 or so years.

He said 52,000 Thais died a year from smoking-related diseases, e

So presumably motor vehicles will be outlawed soon.

Not actually, smoking is something that can be done without. It has no true benefit. Motorcycles get people from point A to B without causing enormous traffic and are also affordable for almost all Thais.

  16. Sigh. It seems they neglected to mention that in bars and nightlife establishments it is still as legal as ever assuring millions of workers and patrons will be in the direct line of fire all night from those who can't be bothered to be considerate to others without such draconian laws.

It seems to me that the majority of workers and patrons in bars and nightlife establishments are smokers themselves so why should they be bothered?

I don't think the majority of workers are smokers. The majority seem to be girls at a lot of the big clubs and in Thailand it is bad for girls to smoke. A lot of girls don't smoke because it is associated with bad girls and prostitutes. These workers shouldn't have to sacrifice their health to earn a living.

Doesn't the fact that the bars are air-conditioned include them in the "no smoking" places.

On the point "a lot of girls don't smoke because it is associated with bad girls and prostitutes" isn't that a bit of a contradiction. Most of the girls who work in these places are prostitutes aren't they? :o

There are a lot more in BKK than just beer bars and go-go bars. There are many clubs that Thais and some foreigners go to that have hard working staff that have to work night in, night out in the smoke filled clubs. They aren't prostitutes, they are waitresses.

  18. I only buy non-pirated.

The quality of the physical media is far superior.

Pirated material is burned on inferior disks.

Is that why non-pirated DVDs cost 40 dollars more?

Real DVDs are only around 200-400 Baht. Might as well buy the real thing. You only save 100-300 Baht and may get a shitty copy. I also personally don't like supporting pirated goods, but that's my personal feeling.
