I tried to do some charitable work and was discouraged as I was told that Thai Immigration considers unpaid charitable work...work.
Use to buy food for old folks homes and children's homes...after being told I did not buy the correct brand of rice...I gave up...but I still contribute to local economy in many ways...

The new rules only affects the folks that can't leave. Whether financial or emotional. If you are financially able to leave, most all will leave. IMO, Thailand is a joke for a retirement destination.
If Thailand is a retirement joke destination...what countries merit serious consideration?

The way he was treated was not abnormal for many interactions where a farang requires Thai assistance. Suckit up ... get the required docs and photos...or try your luck at the airport...

Move to Nong Khai...make 3 month visa run...don't pay agents to get you an illegal visa every year.

Don, really...throw away that accounting educated mind for a moment...ask yourself this commonsense question...at 90 years of age what difference does it really make what bank has use if your money? If you are happy and content in Thailand save yourself a lot of angst and hardship...just relax and enjoy your remaining years...

The US could learn something from Thai immigration...keep the aliens confused by ever changing and moving immigration rules. Apply them selectively and give preferential treatment to those being scalped by agents...

Currently I have had enough of Thailand and plan to return to my home country. I would continue to visit for holidays but the pollution, cost of living and visa issues have started to make living here full time a less attractive option.
Maybe in a few years time, I will come back again (assuming that's even possible from a visa perspective). In the meantime I look forward to hassle free holidays in Thailand. IMHO the trick is to never box yourself in financially in Thailand. I have always treated any money I bring into Thailand as dead money that I will never see again. Note I don't subscribe to the 'if you don't have 800k you don't belong here' view but have seen people transfer a large proportion of their nest egg here with the result that staying does become their only option.
Left Thailand several years ago as I too had had enough of Thailand. Settled into a normal routine of life in a modern country with all its wonderful conveniences...and became bored shitless after a few years of a mundane existence.
Hustled back to Thailand and now life is interesting and exciting once more.
Like paying 200 baht entrance fee to get into a national park while my girl only paid 40. Like dodging motorcycles and other vehicles coming from most any direction at any time...life is good once more. ????

The caviate...the gotcha...is the interpretation of immigration rules by each immigration office and officers. One might go to their respective IO and ask what is acceptable...to gain clarification.

And of course Swiss man has millions of dollars and we had a lot in common to talk about.
The non-hiso untouchables...trying to scrape together enough baht to satisfy immigration...have a lot to talk about too.

There are no beaches in the NE town Udon Thani. It is a relaxed city with more retirees than tourists. A 1 hour train ride to Nong Khai and the Mekong River cost about $1. Short hop across Friendship Bridge to Laos and visit Vientiane...a great old colonial city with many photo ops.
Inexpensive with a real Thai culture experience, foods, and Thai history.
When you get tired of the tourist traps, give NE Thailand a try.

Is this new hassle a coordinated effort to get farangs to disappear altogether? Thailand, now Lao...can Cambodia be far behind?
