It's a long time since I did the Penang run but there used to be agents in most hotel lobbies that would do the visa for you for a small fee whilst you stayed in bed. No need to go to the Consulate yourself.

This has not been thought through - there must be exceptions for emergencies 

This is part of the problem .... they never think things through. They are pushing us to the point where one considers other countries.

If everyone on this forum contributed their 800k we might afford an island. There comes a point where the visa regulations / costs / pollution / traffic jams cause one to leave. Put it another way, is the pleasure worth the pain?

I am not clear, is there still the option of a fixed Thai bank deposit of 400K or 800K as an alternative, same as exists now?

Basic problem with the Thais is they come up with these new rules without considering if they will work or not. I am tired of having no stability or surity of Visa with the Thais.

One can always consider other countries but they all have restrictive Visa rules, so where does one go?
