36 yo Russian on the R1 showing out to his 18 yo Thai cutie, plows into Swede and his Thai wife at top speed. That's the summary as I gather. Tragic and undoubtably avoidable. Stupidity, speed, poor lighting (which is everywhere in Thai at night), slick asphalt roads... a receipt for disaster. Not that it would have mattered much, but I assume not a hemet a worn by anyone.
That road is well lit, 4 lanes wide with a dual carriage way plus the hard shoulder, plenty of room for both of them,

My wife goes to that restaurant a few times a week, we have just been there to pick up some food, the owners live behind and never heard a thing until the orbortor came knocking, next door is a somtam shop and the bikes in the accident ended up in the front of his shop and set the somtam guys bike on fire, One of them leg ended up across the road.
The Russian was well known for speeding up and down the road seems they all know who he his.
They have cleaned it up you wouldn't know there been such an accident.

I think Phuket tops the lot in Thailand and we only read in the news half of what happens, a neighbour of mine her daughters friend got killed a few weeks back on her scooter, never saw that in the news

I live in Phuket and see these out of control Big Bikers every day. Completely surprised that I don't see at least one bad accident a day. My fear is one of these idiots will take out an innocent Thai family on a small bike. I wish they would at least crack down on the Big Bikes. It's a real problem.
It has happened about 500 meters back from this accident, some farang wiped out a husband and wife and she was pregnant, the farang died also, riding a Ducati,

The rental shops should also be getting fined, If people don't have a license then they shouldn't be able to rent a bike

Yes agree, but at least they are taking responsibility for their actions.I do the same when attending functions or a night out in Pattaya, cheaper and easier to book a hotel. I know a few local taxis that would be cheaper, but it is far simpler to use a hotel, no stress and no hassle.
Many years ago I would also book a hotel, I live in Rawai go have a night out in Patong easier all round and safer,
