  1. I like the chaos and the water throwing and the partying. But also on a more traditional level, I like that I have time off at the same time as everyone else so I can spend time will friends and loved ones.

  2. Zoe in yellow is full of those same prostitutes, I mean Reggae closes and then they all go to Spicy. So trying to establish what you want here.

Riverside, Reggae area, and loy Kroh spill into Spicy after hours.

Warm Up, Monkey, Ritmo, Mo'C Mo'L, the rest of Nimm and cosmo spill into Mandalay, Wiz, discovery

but I think Ritmo is also open later than 2, or at least sometimes and the times I have been to Discovery, I was out by 2.

I don't know much of the bars on what I like to call "The Payap side" as most of my friends studied at CMU and stick to the Nimm area.

If you want a bar, where you can sit down, talk, and share a beer after 2am. I only know of restaurants that continue to serve until the wee hours.

  3. Been to spicy twice, once as a "I've heard waaaay too many crazy stories to not go". I promised I never would return. A few years later I did, and while they cleaned it up a bit, I quickly remembered why I promised I would never return. There are much better clubs to stay out at til 5-6am.

Where? And not Lucky please. wink.png

yes me too - where? Zoe closes around 2/3 and they all head off to Spicy - so where? (talking 'straight' places here)

I head off to "The Wiz" Old "Fashion House" 99% I am the only farang. Thais are extremely friendly with you there after you start speaking Thai. They also run specials like free bottle of 100 pipers if you are a table w/ 3 girls.

  4. Andrew: Thanks for sharing, awesome pics.

The scooter scene is a bit younger, around mid teens to late 20's with some other fans as well.

In Chiang Mai they meet on saturday nights at Tapae gate.

Semper: Had my Chaly in Chiang Mai with no papers at all and never had a problem. On the off chance that I do, I have a few police friends that could help me get my bike back if need be. But to prevent from needing this I will get a greenbook or an invoice.

  5. Also, I kinda like the idea of doing a c70 waaaaay different than how every Thai does theirs. While the classic look is nice, it basically comes down to, same bike, different color. One of the reasons I liked the Chalys was because they can be modified in so many different ways.

Plus I can pick up a ragged c70 for 7-9k with green book.

A chaly will cost about 4-7k without any papers. I can get an invoice if I throw a lifan 150cc on it, but I would rather source a 110 or 125 honda Nice engine.

  6. Yeah, I do like the bandit as well, but I like the caferacer-esque look you can turn the SR into.

My Thai buddy used to own one and has lots of friends who ride them. Looking at 50-60k without a book and 80ish with.

The Chaly or c70 will take about 35k from start to finish. A Chaly with papers costs 20+, not worth it when i can just get an invoice with a new engine.

  7. I know there is a big following of big bikes on this forum, but I was wondering who likes classic scooters. I see a lot of threads about the newer automatics etc, so I know a lot if not all have something smaller for the in town rides.

I previously owned a Honda Chaly and sold it last summer and I am looking to get another toy.

    It went from this:

    to this:

100cc dream engine with a piston from a Cheer

Nova forks, larger wheels, endurance exhaust.

It would do 80kph and pull wheelies in 1st and second

Now I am torn between doing a custom C70 or another Chaly, or which to do first.

I hope to get my hands on a Honda nice engine and do a 160cc bore up kit on it and have the chaly look something like this:

If I do the c70, I am going away from the traditional look. Thing a hot rod look, flat black, white walls, powdercoat the rims red with chrome spokes.

    Something like:

I know it's nothing like the custom choppers that some of the members here have, but I really don't want to drop 300k on a bike, nor am I ready to handle something that big. I hope to pick up a nice clean Yamaha SR400 and cruise around the North on that.

  8. no need

it was my understanding that police will stop modified bikes and fine the driver?

See the monkeybike/ Chaly in my avatar?

Swapped the engine, loud exhaust, custom forks, custom seating, changed the wheels, pulls wheelies

And I was never stopped once for it.

I was stopped at a drunk check one night and have no papers for the bike and still had no problems

This is in Chiang Mai, not Bangkok though.

Cops do seem to be pulling over skinny wheeled bikes though, or atleast tacking that fine on after stopping them for no helmet.

  9. I JUST sold my mustang 20mins ago, and for cheap too. Got one last ride in her. Chirped the gears, got her sideways and had fun as she screamed along with her Longtubes and cherry bombs.

I'm thinking a slick Yamaha SR400 with a supertrap is going to be the best cost effective substitute for me when i get back to Chiang Mai... Apartment living means no car, as I wouldn't have a place to work on it. I wouldn't mind a Toyo KE30, TA27, or BMW e30 though...

Being 30 and teaching won't get me a few million baht car, even once I start at the international schools. Oh well biggrin.png

I feel for you, a tear as well. Hope it was a 429. drunk.gif

No, I didn't own a classic or have a Fox with a huge transplant, just a SN95 newedge with the lowly 4.6 2V. But I got her in 2002 with 2500 on her.

I was a full time student and owning a fastback at that time would have not been fun, no place to tinker on it!

  10. Any places doing things like Bacon and jalapenos or stuffed Buffalo Chicken or stuffed cheesesteak?

Leaving from philly in (hopefully) a few days. I put on a bit from eating my last few "Authentic" Philly cheesesteaks haha

  11. I have some Thai friends who sell stuff at the second hand market over near prince/dara/cmis school on Sat and Sunday. Another friend who is a mechanic at the intersection of Wat Nantaram. He doesn't really speak much English, his name is "A"

Are you looking for something specific like the GL or anything old?

I like the c70's and Chalys

Pii A helped me take my Chaly from this:

  12. With a name like ObsessiveAddict, Gold farming in video games sounds right up your alley! Good news, Diablo III releases in May and Blizzard has created an auction house that makes it legal for you to sell your virtual goods for real cash.

  13. I have enjoyed 7, glad I upgraded (student cost was $30). I don't know how I feel about 8 yet. I have it running on another laptop and I am not liking the missing start bar.

It's not that big a transition for me to be honest, even with the Windows 7 Start Menu I mostly started things by hitting the Windows Key (opening the start menu) and typing the first two-three characters of whatever I wanted to open, then hitting Enter. That still works in 8.

And Linux is moving that way too; Ubuntu is going the same way: Hit Windows key, type. (Or select from the screen that comes up). Ubuntu 12.04 (out next month) is looking really nice; there's a beta release out for that as well.

Alternatively, create a folder on the desktop, maybe call it 'Program Manager' for old time's sake, and make shortcuts in there to all of your programs... Should end up with somthing like this: smile.png

It's more of a minor annoyance. If I only had to work in one OS it would be fine. But as my main system is 7, every time I mess around with 8 it is a bit of a hassle. In two years time I won't even notice. (That is if I make the switch. Just bought a new lappy, it will get 7 put on it and this one will go back to Vista when I sell it, unless someone pays me extra to keep it on it.) I miss the $30 Win7 deals, now it's $64

  14. Artemis if you are making 40K+ in Chiang Mai then you are making what the lower tierd inter schools pay here. I think that some might pay around 45-50K, but I don't see your qualifications getting you 60K in CM. I know PhD's here only making 35-45K. Many stopped working for Unis because private secondary schools pay slightly better.

Upper tiered schools will usually avoid teachers who worked at lower tiered schools. Unless they have a mass exodus and need to fill slots.

I have one friend at Prem. and she made 80K but that was a few years ago and when she worked there they refused to do any local hires. I have heard from others that has changed.

One thing to consider is that higher pay usually requires more dilligence/dedication and expertise. You really cannot do any of the bad habbits that you can get away with at Thai schools. Think of your semester of student teaching. I am certain if your mentors were like mine, you had to present yourself at the highest standard at all times. Almost church like behavior. Most teachers I have seen here including myself have relaxed their professionalism slightly. It is hard to keep the same standard as I would have in the west when it is not expected or at time desired. What I hear teachers talk about in the office is definitely not the same caliber of conversation as one would expect in a teachers room back home.

My advice is to stay out of Thailand and build your career in your home state for a few years. Then come back to Thailand. You are youngish. You don't want to be here for 10+ years and have not much more than a few hundred thousand baht saved and no potential for higher earning. I have had some friends return home after Thailand and many schools wouldn't even consider their work experience here valid.

    Good luck.

Thanks, I'll come and teach the coming year as I am hired to do and then see where things lead me. Even if it means a return trip back to the US, I have my plans set up so that I will actually be saving more money than I would with a starting position over here. Housing, gas, and food eat up a much larger portion of my potential salary in the US than it does in Thailand. I just sold off a bunch of my things, cars, piano etc. and I have been wanting to return, so it's not a huge loss if things don't turn out how I want them to. The upside is that if I return to the US I can get a new 5.0 mustang to replace the mustang I just sold today >_< haha. Cheers
