  1. An all too common report. RIP the 18 year old lad. And condolences to his family who must be devistated. And we don't hear of the outcomes of the "severe injuries" to the other - which can be life-changing.
  2. Reminds me of the Swiss (?) woman who was killed for B300 (?) on Phuket some months ago. (I never did hear much follow-up from that case ... maybe this present case will likewise go quiet ... so as not to tarnish the image.)
  3. Good luck with it. I'm reminded of the killing of the black leopard (and other wildlife) some years ago by someone in a business tycoon's party.
  4. If they were serious about this: 1. More effort needed in policing the border - yes, a big job but they have a big army ("360,850 active duty and 200,000 reserve personnel" - from google.) 2. Need very harsh penalities to those who employ, house or harbour illegal entrants. 3. Need a police force to follow up at workplaces, housing estates, etc. ... in short: it's never going to happen: too many local industries rely on the steady supply of these workers. For completeness, I should add: 4. Need schemes to get unemployed Thais into these jobs the illegals are taking (yes, I know: can't be done, won't happen). 5. If illegals are indeed refugees, then proper facilities should be provided for them (yes, I know, it's not Thailand's strong point).
  5. Just back from an Issarn trip ... went with two teenagers to the local hospital for their second-shot appointment ... took 4 1/2 hours! ... I haven't heard the hospital's side as to why it took so long ... but I'm calling the hospital incompetent (in the face of the government's call in the OP). OK, the final half-hour is the "observation period" ... but the other four hours??? - it included a one-hour lunch break for some hospital staff ... BUT we arrived at our appointed time: so, our appointment time included sitting through their lunch.
  6. The weak government is trying to show they are "doing something" ... but the root of the issue is that they did not promptly vaccinate their population (mucked up the Polish Moderna deal, etc, etc).
  7. Had my first ever attack of this just weeks ago getting up from bed: a sudden and an amazingly and violently extreme sensation - lucky I didn't fall. I googled it, and did the exercises described above, and some variations of same (starting from a kneeling and a sitting position) - which seemed to do the trick. I was so horrified by the sensation that I took myself to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital (ENT Department), but by then there were no re-occurances - but they prescribed some pills (which I didn't take) (for motion sickness, I believe) and also vitamin B12 tablets, which I did take. Interested to read here that posters do get it from time to time. I'm certainly more aware now of avoiding unusual head movements: I believe my original attack was triggered by defrosting the fridge ... and hanging my head upside down to examine the underside of the freezer section, to check the progress of the defrosting.
  8. I've read in the last few days they caught about 100 Cambodian, and nearly 50 Burmese, illegal entrants - that's who they caught, and reported - perhaps others get through bringing new infections and new variants.
  9. Always gives me a shudder to read this every day (along with: "but for the grace of ....") Things are far from over ....
  10. A hard nut to crack if government officials are already involved. Maybe he should offer protections to whistle-blowers, otherwise why would they stick their necks out?
  11. No idea on if/when reopening. But yes, I was shocked to see it closed ... and its fifty or so traders just moved on ... I wonder where they all went. Just another sign of the devastation going on ...
  12. It has always intrigued me that the cost of this precious, non-renewable resource (oil), is less than the cost of beer, and even premium brands of water.
  13. 1. As usual: a seemingly promising and positive announcement (albeit with insufficient detail) near the end of a month ... just to encourage destroyed businesses to pay another month's useless rent. 2. They delight in minute details for airport arrivals - and good luck to them - but I suspect a greater danger to the Thai public lies in illegal, on-foot arrivals from adjacent countries, which I presume still takes place ... constantly adding new infections, if not new varients, to the only vaxed to 30-40% (?) local population.
  14. These "opening up" speeches are usually given when a country has 70-80% vaxed ~ here is just 30%? I've always taken these announcements as just teasers to desperate businesses to get them pay another month's rent.
  15. Not mentioned yet: packs (or even just a pair) of (snarling) soi dogs.
  16. As I see it, there are three parts to the task: 1. The optometrist's prescription, 2. The lens grinder's skill, and 3. Frames that are stable (and comfortable). Good luck.
  17. Lucky no one hurt ... a box-cutter can do serious injury ... or indeed, much worse.
  18. What a shocking story - and from the full report, he's lucky he didn't take out his son as well.
  19. 1. Seems to be a lot of effort in this country put into "how to make Sinovac slightly better than near-useless". 2. Will there now be a push for a fourth jab, from those who got the less effective third jab?
  20. 1. We don't hear much these days about the locally produced A-Z vax. 2. Great to be getting more vaxes, but having to get cabinet approval sounds like an unnecessarily cumbersome procedure.
  21. Last time I did this at Jomtien you filled out a form and submitted it with one(?) passport-sized photo. They used to say come back in the afternoon to collect it. Fee was B200 or B300 (some say it should be free, but no point arguing about that.) You should have some evidence of your residence, e.g. a copy of your lease, but I've just used a rent receipt. Yes, an Agent can do it for a fee. In the past I've had to order two (and pay double): one to open a bank account and one to get a bike licence.
  22. True. People under pressure (yes, including Thais) often say something they think is believable, without realizing (in this case) it's inherent impossibility.
