  1. Depends on you - since she's preggers obviously you have the upper hand since not having their daughter married with child isn't very good. I'm quite sure you can use this as a negotiating tactic if a dowery is even necessary.

After my Isaan wife and I married (in Berlin)in 1995 (we met through her cousin, who lived in Berlin, I went out to visit her and invited her back to Berlin - we then married) , we went to (near) Udon Thani to visit the family. I was totally uninformed regarding any dowry and when my wife asked what we could give her family, I suggested 30.000 Baht, which was happily accepted. I later realized that it had been stingy of me, but since then we send her parents 20.000 Baht each year at New Year (as well as 5.000 B each year for each of 10 children........nephews and nieces...).....as well as the occasional 50.000 Baht to purchase another head of cattle....... A couple of years later I was asked to pay the dowry for one of her brothers.........the price went up to 80,000 once it was known that the Farang was paying it....................... 2 years later we also payed the dowry of her older, one-time dovorced older brother - but that only came to 30.000 B.

    Hope this helps....................

  2. I will have to learn to drive the wrong way of the street.

Dont you mean, the correct side of the road? :D:D

:o That is correct - not really a big deal just need to think left or right whatever country you happen to be in. I was driving in yankland within 5 minutes, so driving ob left shouldnt be that big of a deal. Hardest part is shifter and other controls in opposite place, so thats what takes getting use to.

Anyways if you have to have a car - save yourself headaches and hire a driver.

Why are the "shifter" (gear stick??? -- it´s still between the 2 front seats........) and "other controls" (clutch and gas pedal???? - they are in the same position on left-hand and right-hand cars) in the opposite place??? That must have been one hel_l of a car you had....... :D

  3. ]

Well----I´m very glad to learn that the Murkins are not in the majority here...... I feel almost at home from the start............ they just seem to have a lot to say for themselves here... but then isn´t that the case generally???? (Just joking guys..... I knew a lot of very nice Murkins in Berlin when I was still spying.........). Which reminds me.... why did most of the lady Murkins (soldiers´wives) have huge backsides... and the men (the soldiers) were mostly as skinny as rakes??? Was it due to the peanut butter sandwiches, I wonder?????

  4. Oooooops... this was supposed to appear in General topics...... as an introduction to myself..... didn´t really want to start a new topic....... seem to have boobed on my first attempt..... oh well...it can only get better......

  5. Sawaddee krup to all Thaivisa members!!

My name is Phil - I´ve actually joined just to swell the ranks of the Brits here, who seem to be in a minority. I get the impression that a large percentage of members here are "Murkins"...... all with a good sense of humour, I´m sure... so I´ll allow myself this opening quip!! :D

I used to work for GCHQ in Cheltenham, UK - was sent to Berlin as a spy in 1976, which I worked as for 3 years (seriously....), before quitting thtough sheer boredom (eventually there weren´t any more Russians left to shoot...). Sill located in Berlin... but in property management. Married to a wonderful Isaan woman and planning to retire to Thailand in around 4 years. Visit Thailand every 2 years - next trip in November. Have been following lots of threads and find a lot of them great reading... will join in, I think, in the near future........ :o
