  1. every heard of a joke? Thais like to have fun with their language and not be so serious all the time

I hear it sometimes and I occasionally reply with a "Ka" and a smile. I generally get a smile in return. I certainly don't take offence at it. Like someone else pointed out some Thais like to play with the language.

  2. There is an old adage "The best predictor of future behaviour is past behvaiour"

The immigratin officer, having allowed you in (remember that he could easily have denied you entry", has simply ensured that you know the rules. It is up to you to abide by them.

Even if you obtained a visa at an embassy in your home country an immigration officer can still dent entry.

  3. I get the impression that people posting here are wasting their time, including me. Is the OP simply wanting to draw traffic or increase their posting count? As people say, not enough information has been given and no replies from the OP responding to questions.

One last try then. OP, what nationality are you and where were you married?

  4. Baidu!!! A real pain to get rid of! Don't try the Baidu removal tools, they won't work and will cause you more problems, just waste your time. Don't use the uninstall option either. It will make you go to their website and make you go barmy.

Go to programs in control panel and uninstall everything named Baidu. Then go to my computer, programs and delete everything called Baidu, then do a search on Baidu and delete everything with a link to anything Baidu. Then try, if it will allow you, do a system restore to a date prior to getting the problem.

I have managed to remove it on friends' computers but it is a real pain. Good luck.

It can be done. Otherwise it may be better to format and reinstall Windows.

  5. I think they, the UK pension people, must be having a purge on UK pensioners. I had a "Proof of Life" certificate delivered yesterday. Just three months after I first became eligible for the state pension. They wan me dead already? Sorted out quickly, signed by my accountant and sent this morning.

  6. A couple of years ago a Thai girl I know had a gold chain ripped from her neck whilst she was riding a bike on Sukhumvit. She reported it immediately. Within 15 minutes she had a call from the police asking her to go to Soi 9 police station to collect her chain. They had stopped the thief's bike and got the chain.

What is the point of this story? ... if you report a snatched gold chain to the police within 15 minutes Pattaya's finest will get it back for you???

That girl won the jackpot that day, that's for sure.

The point is that a police check on a bike found stolen property.

  7. Not really astonished.

I know a similar story in the west, when they planned to build a hospital for mentally challenged people.

It's more than often a similar attitude in the west:

"Holy St. Florian, spare my house, lit other houses. .."

Yes, I have seen first hand NIMBYs at work. NIMBYs, Not In My Back Yard. Yes, people should be re-housed soomewhere - but not near me.

  9. This is the perfect time of year to stop people on bikes. A quick look at the tax disc and most should show the year as 2558, if it shows 2557 there is a good chance that it has expired. Only a couple of weeks left of this year. It is easier to do this on a car with the tax disc on the windscreen, on a bike it needs to be stopped to see the tax disc.

Next time you see a checkpoint park up and watch. The huge majority of those stopped are Thai. The police have seen me so many times they recognise me and wave me through. The last time I was stopped, about two years ago, was so the officer could borrow my licence to show a foreigner and ask if he had one.

Looking under seats? It doesn't take a genius to understand they are looking for questionable items.

In 14 years of riding and driving here I have never been fined.

I do wonder at the mentality of those who ride without a helmet then complain that they have been fined.

  10. Wow.

    Thanks for your report.

    Glad you survived it.

What time of that day and what place did this happen?

Did you have your passport on you?

I think most people walk around without their passport .. have it at home or hotel.

Are they arresting people for not having their passport?

Do you think they would be convinced with a copy of passport and current legal stay stamps?

Jing, i think OP likes to exaggerate a little.

If they just drove around asking all foreigners for passport and arrest those who failed to produce original , cars and detention centers would be packed.

Yes they can ask for your passport and may detain you or follow you or have you to call someone to bring your passport.

I am certain they will not throw you in IDC if you had valid passport and visa.

OP's experience sounds scary, but what did he expect for breaking the law? a nice 5 star hotel with breakfast in bed

Its common knowledge Thai jails are not the nicest place in the world, more reason NOT to break the law in Thailand or have enough money to avoid seeing the cells.

There is no excuse to justify over stay.

There is a good old saying" do not do the crime if you not prepared to do the time "

I beg to differ on your sweeping statement that "there is no excuse for overstay"

I have a friend who went to an agency to obtain a visa and after a while received

    his passport all visa completed.

during the next few weeks the visa agency was raided by police and there were

lots of stories going round about forged documents ect so as my friend was due

to go to the airport he decided to get his visa checked by the immigration there

and after having it checked by the man at immigration and then his superior he

was assured his visa was legit and told "enjoy your stay"

two months later he was phoned by Bangkok immigration that there was a problem

with his visa and because the three thai people who he trusted had let him down

he was now liable for 20,000 bht overstay fine.

there were about 7/8 others who had been given dodgy visa's but what happened

    to them is unknown,

Zoza, if your friend had a legal visa then the reason he was fined for overstay is probably that he was late doing 90 day reporting. You said he had received his passport with visa, then a few weeks later the agent was raided. You then say he was phoned two months later by immigration. That took several weeks overall. When did he do his 90 days report prior to his new visa?

  11. Many British people arrive at Manchester without change and most foreign tourists have no access to UK coins before they fly there. The last two times I flew there I couldn't get a trolley.

I live here in a supposedly third world country with a far superior airport service.

  12. OP, you don't say how old you are. One of my neighbourd, Thai, born in Thailand went to live as a child in Zurich with his mother.

He came back to Thailand as an adult last year. When he applied for a Thai ID number and card it was discovered that he had not attended the draft (as he was not in Thailand). He had to see the relevant army General to get clearance before he could get it all sorted.

Perhaps something for you to enquire about before you arrive.
