What I consider more important, as I really have no idea on the accuracy of these adsl speedtests, is the length of time it takes to download a movie or whether streaming video works well. I use 3BB, pay for 16 gown, 1 up.

  2. thai price i presume and a multitude for the tourists ?

What do you mean? It's 199 baht for the ticket for everyone, it's in the article. Not even sure what multitude means in the context of your sentence.

I guess that he means will a multiple of 199 will be charged for foreigners. Dual Pricing?

A really useful topic. It would make a nice few days out next time I have a reason to go to Bangkok. Thanks OP.

  3. This reminds me of the time I was buying a new mobile phone in Tuk Com, Sri Racha. The vendor, named Oil, wouldn't tell me the price because she was selling the same model to a Thai customer. She looked at me and pressed a finger to her lips to tell me to keep quiet. When the Thai customer had paid for the phone and left she charged me a few hundred Bt less. I must add that I have known her for several years, bought several phones and taken friends there as well.

  4. I had both my UK driving license and IDP, a couple of weeks back here in Pattaya. The Tourist Police took my IDP away and said that I should go and pay the 400THB fine if I wanted to see it again... Obviously, that was useless and insulting advice seen as they were at their mobile checkpoint most of the day and attending the station would be pointless due to the French guy clearly stuffing it in his pocket. Before the day was over, the Thai's from a different spot took my UK license away and said that I should go to the station to pay my fine, because I didn't have an IDP. But I don't mind, because these are the 'good guys'. blink.png F*cking theft!

I am guessing, as it is not clear from your post, that you were stopped and because you had committed an offence were told to pay the fine at the Police Station in Soi 9. There you would have been given a receipt for the payment of said fine. Then you would have been able to go back to recover your IDP. That is standard practice.

If you were stopped later the same day at a mobile checkpoint and fined then they were correct. You didn;t have an IDP nor a Thai licence so they were correct in fining you. If you had paid your fine earlier and retreived your IDP you wouldn't have been fined.

  5. Well done to Private Dancer for putting on an "Oldies Night". Music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Stuff I haven't heard of for ages. Stevie Ray Vaughan in particular stood out for me.

As the curfew was still in place they were open from early doors. I went in at 7pm, and by 8pm the place was rocking. I was sorry to have to leave early due to the curfew closing time. Let's hope that they make it a regular event. The Oldies Night, not the curfew!
  6. I have just done a very quick search. Loads of results from the UK and the US about toddlers drowning while mothers slept or wrote on Facebook, used PCP or smoked Cannabis.

My point is, this happens everywhere, criticise the mother but avoid trying to make it a Thai trait.

My sympathy goes to her as well. She has lost a daughter and will live with that for the rest of her life.

  7. Good. I hope the scarcity of transport on the Malaysia side spurs a little hotter trade in busses.

First time I wandered across that bridge beyond Hat Yai was quite a shock- no vans, busses, taxis or hotels.

Dark, raining, alone, and with no available transpoirtation. Makes for a good travel story- ecoomics, not so much.

You know, I have been coming to Hatyai since 1990, and have yet to see that 45km long bridge to Malaysia.

There wasn't a bridge there last year when I last went to Hat Yai. Wouldn't want to cross it if there was.

  8. I used an ATM inside Tesco Lotus. No moey came out. I assumed it was an ATM problem. Within an hour I checked online and saw that 200 GBP and 1oo GBP hade been taken out of my account. One withdrawal in Moscow, the other in Kiev. The bank refunded my money. Mind you, I did laugh when the person I spoke to in my bank asked if I had been to Russia and forgotten.
