  1. Having lunch in some little hole in the wall noodle shop one day with a few Thai friends. I picked up the bill for three of us which was something like 96 baht. I left the change, four one baht ,coins on the table as a tip. Get out to my car ready to drive off when the waitress comes running up to my window to give me the four baht...thai friends explained she thought i had forgot to pick up my change.. she apparently couldn't quite believe someone actually left them a tip.

Or, she thought your tip was so insulting, that you needed the 4 Baht more than she did.

  2. From my balcony in View Talay 5D on the Pattaya side I watch the dinghy races every Sunday.

Every Sunday starting in the morning and lasting to the early afternoon 100's of the types of sailboats that you discussing have races.

That set out a course of buoys and they race around them.

They even have judges in little boats positioned by the buoys to make sure every boat makes it around each one.

  3. We did not touch the food, got up and walked out of the restaurant. The manager came after us with the bill as we were getting into the car

telling me "we had to pay the bill..."

...I just shrugged my shoulders. Never went back. Maybe it taught them a lesson. Maybe not. Who cares.

Too bad you were not arrested for skipping out on a bill like you should of been. That surely would of taught you a lesson!

  4. interesting, i have been in the same house for 12 years and never received a receipt or had a contract, lt alone been asked to show one.

This is what makes me think it's a new regulation - the fact that the young lady looked at the receipt, clearly showing their stamp plus rent and deposit paid as well as power and water meter readings, yet that wasn't enough and then asked for a rental contract.

For instance I have see many time farangs getting refused any service at all because they were dressed in a cut off t-shirt.

Interested thread, I had my retirement Visa renewed this week and something happened related to this discussion that left me a little confused while I was there.

I have lived here 10 years and have never been asked if I rent or own. I get a letter from my embassy for my income and I use the same UBC receipt for my address that I have presented for the past 3 years or so. I keep it in my Passport so I do not forget it.

My application went through perfectly, like it always does. But, a guy sat down next to me at the 2nd table after you pay and submit your paperwork and the officer asked him if he rented or owned. He said he rented, and the officer told him he needed the rental contract.

The same officer did not ask me anything. I told the guy to just turn in a UBC or internet receipt and that would work. When I said that the officer did not say anything, but after the guy left he told me the receipt “No Work”, he must have rental contract.

That is why I was confused, I did not understand the difference and I thought it was because I been here for so long. But, I know realize there was a difference, and it was in appearance. Before I went to immigration I showered and saved and wore a nice shirt and pair of paints.

That guy did not look like he had shaved in days and his hair looked terrible. I am not sure why they gave him a hard time, and they did not ask me a single question. But, trying to look presentable just might go a long way at immigration now a days.

  5. Hi,

This is a great thread. I have smoked 2 packs a day for the last thirty years and live with a soar throat and terrible cough.

I really need to get off of them.

I live in Pattaya and have been searching for them, but not having any luck.

Could somebody that lives here please PM me and let me know where I can get the Ecig along with the liquid refills.

    I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Bill

  6. I need to go to Banglamung Hospital in a couple of days, and I am really not sure how to get there even after looking at the map.

I was planning on taking the Baht bus down 2nd road in North Pattaya and getting off at the right street and taking a motor bike taxi to the hospital.

But, I am not sure if the bus goes all the way to the street that takes you to the hospital.

Does anybody know if the bus does go all the way to the correct street where I can get a motor bike taxi?

If so, are there any hospital signs that will let me know where to get off, or are there any landmarks I should look for?

Any help will be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

  7. Th

at is EXACTLY why ALL health services should be run at cost by
efficient Government services and NEVER privately profit motivated. I
totally abhor making money out of peoples misfortunes and ill health
(same with childrens' educations). Sure doctors and nurses and
others working in the healthcare system should be remunerated fairly
according to their skills and efficiency, but please no blatant non
value added greedy money making destructive profits. Basic and good
healthcare should be a right of ALL citizens in a civilised country as
indeed it is in the UK, and all such socially minded countries should
have a mutual agreement to share such free care for their citizens (as
they do in many European countries).

Hospitals should be build for the people by the people and paid for
out of fair income / profit related taxation. Capitalism can be good in
many respects but in healthcare we must have a Socialist system to be
fair and beneficial to all people. Capitalism and Socialism BOTH have
good and bad points you have to realise, so just leave Capitalism out of
basic healthcare Healthcare should be available free and for all
based entirely on medical need and urgency with no immoral queue jumping
just because some a'hole has money and wants to jump ahead of others in
    more need.

Oh before any right wing idiots start, I am nether Capitalist nor
Socialist but a bit of both and accept that there is a correct centre
way that embraces all that is good from both those undesirable
destructive extremes, As far as Healthcare is concerned (and most other
things too) then peoples' well being is far more important than money
making. People must always come first, money well after that.

That was without question, one of the best quotes ever placed on this site.

And, I agree with everything that you wrote %100.

  8. I assume you have satellite because the channels cannot be grouped by genre.

I have True Visions cable, which, I assume gives exactly the same channel line-up.

But.... you can group the channels as you like.

If you can group channels and put them next to each other, I really wish you would explain how to do it.

I have tried, and I also went to the UBC office and they could not tell me.

If anybody knows how to program out the channels you do not watch, if you shared that information I am sure quite a few people would appreciate it.

I have used the "Favorite Channel" selection and I have no idea what it does other than waste your time selecting the ones that you want to keep and they still all come up.

  9. I have cable, and i was talking about the ability to reorder channels

and remove channels of no interest. It's what i always did before.

    I agree with you 100%.

I so wish I could get rid of the channels that I NEVER watch like you used to be able to do.

Now they have 200 channels and I would like to see what is on some of them, but it takes 10 minutes to flip though all of them.

    It just SUCKS!

I so wish some that works a UBC would read this thread and come up with a way that you can group channels and more importantly remove the ones that you never watch.

  10. WOW, I just read this whole thing, I don't know why.

Being a CPA, I had to do some calculations.

You said that Kasikorn offered you a loan at 11.5%, but you want 10%.

The difference in your interest expense for a 500,000 BAHT loan, with no payments made except the final one would be less than 8,000 BAHT.

    Did you know that?

If not, now you do, and you should take it.

Most loans require monthly payments for a good reason.

It signifies the borrower’s ability to fulfill their financial obligations and manage their money properly.

If the bank required monthly payments, and you are not capable of making them, that is a good reason for you not taking that loan.

However, you should also acknowledge that fact, and be more than willing to accept a much higher rate because the risk is much higher for the institution or individual providing the capital for the loan.

  11. I have been to the Silver Star 100's of times and never had a problem.

If you think about this a little bit, more than likely you thought your drink should of cost 120 Baht or so.

So, over 60 Baht you started a big problem, which I am sure was much more than you are admitting to.

I am sorry you got beat up, that should never happen to anybody.

But, there is defiantly a lot more to this story than what you are letting on.

  12. Try Richman Poorman in Soi 9. There's a complete breakfast menu.

I looked at their menu it doesn't look like it is in the same league as the Cowboy Bar.

The "Build Your Own OMELETTE” cost 40 Baht more and it does not come with coffee, juice, fresh fruit, and everything else they have.

  13. The Whitehouse now is the Splendid Hotel.

That is it, I looked at the hotel sign when I was leaving the street and it was a little difficult to read.

On the same side as the Cowboy Bar but further along is the Damnark Hotel which has a great buffet breakfast for 160 baht. It is

Scandanavian style with deli meats, cheeses, potatoes, breads, plus several Thai dishes for the ladies.

I will have to try it out and report back.

  14. I live right across the street from the Continental Bakery and they serve a real good breakfast, but they are only second best.

The best breakfast in Jomtien is the buffet at the Cowboy Bar, which cost 150 Baht.

Sorry, but the road it is located on does not have a street sign.

It is on the street right after Soi 7 if you are heading down beach road towards Sattahip. It is a dead-end road with a hotel at the end of it so you cannot drive all the way through. Maybe somebody will know the name of the hotel or street.

First, they have fully cooked bacon not that partially cooked stuff that 99% of the restaurants serve here that is all fat. The bacon is the really thick expensive kind.

Second, it is the only buffet that has cheese that I have found. Third, they have an omelet bar.

What I do is get some bacon, cheese, onions, green peppers, salami, and tomatoes and have them make me a three egg omelet. It is great, the best omelet in the city.

Note, they have ingredients at the omelet bar, but unless you pick your out your own from the buffet, the omelet is not nearly as good.

They breads and rolls they serve are pretty good, and the home fries are not bad. They also have all the typical stuff like fresh fruit, coffee, and juice.
