  1. I assume you have satellite because the channels cannot be grouped by genre.

I have True Visions cable, which, I assume gives exactly the same channel line-up.

But.... you can group the channels as you like.

If you can group channels and put them next to each other, I really wish you would explain how to do it.

I have tried, and I also went to the UBC office and they could not tell me.

If anybody knows how to program out the channels you do not watch, if you shared that information I am sure quite a few people would appreciate it.

I have used the "Favorite Channel" selection and I have no idea what it does other than waste your time selecting the ones that you want to keep and they still all come up.

  2. I have cable, and i was talking about the ability to reorder channels

and remove channels of no interest. It's what i always did before.

    I agree with you 100%.

I so wish I could get rid of the channels that I NEVER watch like you used to be able to do.

Now they have 200 channels and I would like to see what is on some of them, but it takes 10 minutes to flip though all of them.

    It just SUCKS!

I so wish some that works a UBC would read this thread and come up with a way that you can group channels and more importantly remove the ones that you never watch.

  3. WOW, I just read this whole thing, I don't know why.

Being a CPA, I had to do some calculations.

You said that Kasikorn offered you a loan at 11.5%, but you want 10%.

The difference in your interest expense for a 500,000 BAHT loan, with no payments made except the final one would be less than 8,000 BAHT.

    Did you know that?

If not, now you do, and you should take it.

Most loans require monthly payments for a good reason.

It signifies the borrower’s ability to fulfill their financial obligations and manage their money properly.

If the bank required monthly payments, and you are not capable of making them, that is a good reason for you not taking that loan.

However, you should also acknowledge that fact, and be more than willing to accept a much higher rate because the risk is much higher for the institution or individual providing the capital for the loan.

  4. I have been to the Silver Star 100's of times and never had a problem.

If you think about this a little bit, more than likely you thought your drink should of cost 120 Baht or so.

So, over 60 Baht you started a big problem, which I am sure was much more than you are admitting to.

I am sorry you got beat up, that should never happen to anybody.

But, there is defiantly a lot more to this story than what you are letting on.

  5. Try Richman Poorman in Soi 9. There's a complete breakfast menu.

I looked at their menu it doesn't look like it is in the same league as the Cowboy Bar.

The "Build Your Own OMELETTE” cost 40 Baht more and it does not come with coffee, juice, fresh fruit, and everything else they have.

  6. The Whitehouse now is the Splendid Hotel.

That is it, I looked at the hotel sign when I was leaving the street and it was a little difficult to read.

On the same side as the Cowboy Bar but further along is the Damnark Hotel which has a great buffet breakfast for 160 baht. It is

Scandanavian style with deli meats, cheeses, potatoes, breads, plus several Thai dishes for the ladies.

I will have to try it out and report back.

  7. I live right across the street from the Continental Bakery and they serve a real good breakfast, but they are only second best.

The best breakfast in Jomtien is the buffet at the Cowboy Bar, which cost 150 Baht.

Sorry, but the road it is located on does not have a street sign.

It is on the street right after Soi 7 if you are heading down beach road towards Sattahip. It is a dead-end road with a hotel at the end of it so you cannot drive all the way through. Maybe somebody will know the name of the hotel or street.

First, they have fully cooked bacon not that partially cooked stuff that 99% of the restaurants serve here that is all fat. The bacon is the really thick expensive kind.

Second, it is the only buffet that has cheese that I have found. Third, they have an omelet bar.

What I do is get some bacon, cheese, onions, green peppers, salami, and tomatoes and have them make me a three egg omelet. It is great, the best omelet in the city.

Note, they have ingredients at the omelet bar, but unless you pick your out your own from the buffet, the omelet is not nearly as good.

They breads and rolls they serve are pretty good, and the home fries are not bad. They also have all the typical stuff like fresh fruit, coffee, and juice.

  8. The cost of health care in Thailand is much less than it is in the US and most European countries.

The 5 Million Baht policy BUPA offers will cover almost any serious illness that you come down with.

Unless, like I stated previously, you will need “Out Patient Care”, and it will not cover that.

There are essentially two different types of hospitals in Thailand, which are the “Public” and the “Private”.

For all emergencies, I recommend the private hospitals.

Each of these institutions provides exceptional medical care, and I will try to point out the differences between the two below based on my past experiences.

    1) The Public hospitals are FAR less expensive.

    2) The Public hospitals do NOT have all of the latest most innovative and expensive medical equipment.

I got real sick here a few years ago and almost died.

I checked into Bangkok Pattaya Hospital and was in the operating room in less than two hours.

After my first operation, I woke up in ICU. They were not able to get all of the infection cut out with the first operation. So, they did a CAT Scam and performed a second operation.

According to my doctors, that was the one that saved my life.

My first week at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital cost me 500,000 Baht.

At the time, like a dumb ass, I did not have health insurance. I could not afford to spend that amount each week for a long hospital stay.

So, I transferred myself to Queen Sirikit Hospital in Sattahip. I stayed there 5 more weeks and had 3 more operations.

    That cost me 120,000 Baht.

But, they always x-rayed me and did not use a CAT Scan machine, because I do not think that they had one.

I am not sure I would be alive today without that machine.

Queen Sirikit Hospital in Sattahip provided excellent medical care based on their limitations. I thought both the nurses and the doctors did a wonderful job and were quite caring and professional.

    3) The public hospitals do not have as many staff as the private hospitals. When I was in Queen Sirikit Hospital in Sattahip they did not have enough nurses working the night shift, and I had to hire one of their employees to sleep in my room with me because that is their rules.

I hope that helps, good luck.

  9. Oh, i get dizzy of all abbreviations OMP, SED,TDS, GoR. - just made up them, but anyway. I get headache to read about all theses exceptions and if and buts.

I'm 43 years old, non-native English guy (i had to look up the word "abbreviations" above) who have been living in Thailand for more then 9 years. It is time to get my self a health and accident insurance that covers the bigger things like heart diseases, kindly, liver failure, falling of my bike and hurt my self really bad etc. I have really hard times to read all these complex texts and hope for some advice here.

Which insurance is the best to cover the serious medical issues mentioned above without breaking the bank? I'm okay if i could pay like 3000 baht a month

I have a work permit since 2004 so im in a way covered, at least i'll let me to believe that anyway. - any comments?

I'm a non smoker, lightly over weight 103kg at 183 cm

    Cheers,

I have looked over all of the options many times, and I have been with BUPA now for about 5 years. I have never had a claim, thank goodness.

But, I have read many threads like this one, and they all say the company pays when it is supposed to. This month, I am upgrading my insurance from 2 Million, to 5 Million, which is the best plan they offer.

By the way, the time to buy health insurance is when you do NOT need it and you are healthy. After you get sick, or come down with a disease, you might not be able to get health insurance, and if you do, it will not cover what you have.

The thing I do NOT like about BUPA’s plan is that it really does not cover “Out Patient Care” The maximum coverage that you can buy is 60,000, and at my age, which is 55 it cost 30,000.

The reason that this is a problem, is because some forms of cancer treatment are performed on “Out Patient Basis”, and they can be quite expensive.

If you are a non smoker, you really should consider getting a cancer supplemental policy in addition to BUPA’s regular policy, just to be safe. BUPA offers a cancer rider, but not for foreigners.

I found this other company Thai Health Insurance that does offer a cancer policy, but I am not sure if they cover foreigners. So, you are going to have to check it out.

This is BUPA website where you can read over its policies, and get a direct quote.

It would cost a 43 year old for their 1 Million Policy about 31,000 a year.

It would cost a 43 year old for their 2 Million Policy about 34,000 a year.

It would cost a 43 year old for their 5 Million Policy about 40,000 a year.

    Good luck

  10. Neteller is similar to a European PayPal. One of my girlfriends is in Europe now and has a Neteller Visa card and she wants me to put some funds in it. I tried to wire out funds from my banks but they did not go through.

Does anybody who uses Neteller know which banks allow wire transfers to Neteller?

    Thanks in advance!

  11. It is true, they have actually started to install new sidewalks on Thappraya Road. The instillation began in front of the View Talay sales office, which is in front of View Talay 2.

I know it might take a year or more for them to complete the job, but at least they started. Hopefully, the new sidewalks will get rid of all of the sand that is always on the road and blowing all over the place.

  12. The short answer is that they are two different things. Unlawful means "contrary to, prohibited, or unauthorized by law...while necessarily not implying the element of criminality, it is broad enough to include it." Illegal means "against or not authorized by law."

So, for example, you could unlawfully stay in your apartment after your lease is up (unlawful detainer) but that's not a crime against the state, it's a civil wrong (tort) against your landlord. If the landlord then took you to court and had you properly evicted, and you then returned to the premises, you might then be guilty of the crime of trespassing. Trespassing is illegal. See how easy?

From: "The Straight Dope dot com"

Really great answer, which is quite unusual for this place.

  13. Probably not but your premium will go up plus the illnesses you had will be classed as 'prior known medical conditions' and not covered.

Once you have the insurance and you have a problem, it is NOT classified as a prior known medical condition. On the other hand, if you had a problem before you signed up with that company it is.
