  1. I'm in the process of renewing my passport. A passport is considered valid in Thailand as long as it has 6 months validity, if you see what I mean. I.e, used no later than 6 months before expiry. My understanding is:

in Thailand, an appointment is required to be made for the application, and the application has to be made in person, as does the collection of the new passport. Applications and collections are made from Trendy Building, Soi Sukhumwit 13, Bangkok. It costs £118.51, including £23.01 courier fee for your new passport to be delivered to Trendy. Your old passport has to be returned to Durham in UK to be cancelled and returned to Trendy. Visas are not transferred, not are stamps. If there is a current visa are active stamping the old passport, both passports must be carried and shown. The superseding stamp will be placed in the the new passport.

Either information can be found at:

  2. So many experts in the movement in price of gold and its intrinsic value.

Gold will sell for what people are willing to pay for it and it's priced in USD on the world market. Variations in local currency will make its local price appear to go up or down, even if world markets are stable, which they rarely are.

Thai gold is normally 96 plus %  gold and the rest is alloy. This equates to 23 carats.

It can be a good investment, with a farang outlook, but the Thais I have known have no why or wherefore about gold. Will buy when they have money, will pawn when they think they will be broke short term and will sell when long term cash is needed. Except when they think they need to change it. No rhyme or reason for that, to my understanding. But I'm farang and don't understand, according to the wife....

  3. I wonder both of no runs the poster and vinyl board company is and where and how they are disposed of in these more environmentally aware times.

Biometrics in UK need no finger prints. Passport and facial recognition.

Used to be IRIS scan. Had to be registered.

In Paris, it was the passport and choose the prints of any 1 of the 10 fingers. Also had to register.

  4. Pyrolysis is a way of disposal of plastic. It can be an expensive method, but has benefit of producing fuels. Composting of organic matter is important, as landfill can produce methane, a greenhouse gas and a constituent of cooking gas.

Old cooking oils can be used and turned into biodiesel. Bio char is another use of organic matter.

Incomplete combustion causes most smoke and polution, this is due to lack of air to the fire. A proper burn bin, with a blower connected will eradicate that.

  5. The original poster seems to fail to take into account, that in the US, the sticker price is rarely the price paid. So, in this case, a service charge can be considered as similar.

In countries where tips are required to ensure staff are paid the minimum wage, the regulation enforcing such minimum wage is lacking. I'm sure the country's revenue service looks at this closely.

Displayed prices of meals should include all overheads, so that a diner can decide whether the service delivered deserves rewarding with a tip. A tip should not be mandatory, nor a service charge levied.

Just put the damn prices displayed, at the level where all costs are covered.

  6. The big stores and franchises have 'banned' single use plastic bags at The checkout.

The guy that gets his pork from the market is unaffected, as are we who buy wet fish or meat from the big stores, Even the big stores realise they have to continue to put such items in a plastic bag.

For goodness sake. A little common sense in reporting, rather than asking idiots.

  7. Where does 'owning' a dog begin? Or cat for that matter? Who is responsible for the actions of a dog or cat? You don't own the dog or cat, it owns you.

If you feed them, you are responsible. If you pet them, you are responsible. If you let them on your land you are responsible. If you drop plastic bags of rice, you are responsible. If you let then roam the streets, you are responsible.

You are also responsible for the 24/7 welfare of a 3 year old child, cos the mother has gone to Bangkok to work and the father's bu**ered off.

  8. How can they be popular now then, if they are pricier than those elsewhere? People vote with their wallet.

Also, with regards to cheapness, what sort of tourists do you want to come here to Thailand? Backpackers who spend no money? Chinese tourists who spend their money in Chinese owned businesses? Fami!ies? Russians?

Once upon a time, Thailand was popular. Around the 60's and 70's with Americans.....

Times change and we must change with it. Western tourists are shamed by carbon footprint now. Climate change is forefront of many people's minds. Tourism will die soon. No one will be able to travel anywhere soon.

  9. My experience in Si Saket over the past 3 days...

Went Immigration to get a certificate, got told to go to the LTO. Submitted copies and originals. Forgot the medical certs. No photos. Got given a letter to take to Immigration. A bit late in the day so.... Next day went to Immigration. Within 15 minutes, a Certificate was in my hands, no fees, plus a new 90 day reporting date. Delayed a bit more, a bit late in the day to get to the LTO, went to get 2 medical certificates in my hands for 100 Baht. (Car and bike licences). Today, gave the residence cert and medical certs to the LTO, watched the videos, took the depth perception, colour and braking reflex tests and walked out with 2 licences for 310 baht. 205 for car and 105 for bike. I arrived at 13:00 and was on my way home with brand new licences by 14:30.I

I make no comment on other people's experiences, just saying mine. I thought it was effectively and efficiently handled and could possibly have been completed in a day, if I hadn't faffed about.
