    Bolt and Grab, no issues.

    In Pattaya taximeters do'not exsist.

I have had Bolt drivers say they want cash when I am already paying on my CC through the app.

They were ok when I explained that though.

Another Bolt driver messaged me before pickup that he wanted cash so I canceled as same problem, and I don't want to pay twice.

Has never happened to me with Grab.

in BKK areas where taxis are known not to use the meter I use grab, MuvMi (tuktuk) or Lineman

Even in MBK taxi line the first 5 taxis did not want a ride with meter.

It will not change unless all refuse these taxis and use apps

Ride apps are a good solution.

The only problem I found with using apps is that the GPS doesn't always accurately give the pickup location.

On Ramkhamheang Rd with 4 lanes and a middle divider the Grab app couldn't tell if I was on the north or the south side of the road.

More than once i have had to jog down the street to catch the Grab taxi.

Generally, I ask the fare if they aren't using the meter, and weigh the convenience of paying a premium and pay it or not.

I have learned don't go with drivers that say "up to you", at the end of the ride he probably won't accept a reasonable fare.

Can't imagine the amount of overcharge that would get me to spend time in the complaint process.

I know, "it's the principle of the thing".

You see no problem in calling for assignations ?

Putin and Trump are fair game   how about Biden and "Bibi" ?

Unintended humor, I know you meant assassinations.

But I am all for assignations.

    as·sig·na·tion /ˌasiɡˈnāSH(ə)n/

    noun; plural noun: assignations

    1. an appointment to meet someone in secret, typically one made by lovers.

"his assignation with an older woman"

Most Trumpers are older, not very educated and very racist. They blame their problems on immigrants and the deep state. Rather than taking responsibility for their own situation. They are drawn like moths to a light for information that supports their feelings.

Too much hated from them. Really sad.

    Agreed.

I think many of them really should be very pleased with their lot in life.

I guess it is natural to look ahead and upward and have expectations that all will be better year after year.

They are told to be angry and resentful and they buy into it.

But I think the Trumpers are angry over nothing.

Personally when I compare my life to that of Keith Richards (millionaire, never had a job but to be a Rolling Stone) I feel a little disappointed.

But realistically I am pretty content with my lot in life, humble though it may be.

Turnbull  has little cause to worry because trump has a snowman's chance in hell of getting elected again.  This is the Primer, during the General election all   Biden has to do is play parts of trump's inarticulate and frankly bizarre speeches.

    You would think but...

He has a solid core of dyed in the wool followers, then those who are voting against Biden, those who are voting against any kind of liberal/leftist agenda, then the culture war voters who think Trump will bring back the 1950s.

I thought as you do the first time he ran but he won of course.

Craft beer will be o.k. They just need to bring out an Old Liver Rot IPA with a blackened liver already on the can. 🙂

It's so preposterous. There's so much good they could do to get people to cut down on alcohol but they just love their restrictive and prohibitive measures.

" they just love their restrictive and prohibitive measures."

Maybe "they" do but this suggestion (whether a good idea or not) is neither restrictive or prohibitive.

It's intended to discourage alcohol use by information as far as i can see.

My question would be: have the graphic pictures on cigarette packages decreased the sale of cigarettes?

A quick search on this topic comes back with a lot of articles and a resounding "meh".

No clear indication that warning labels decreased cigarette use, I doubt these labels would be effective.

Before you speculate, why dont you go to that channel and watch it and then comment.

Don't need to. I'm not speculating.

If you had completed your education, you would know that those are the only kind of statements that can be made based on statistics.

A group of men rising at 3:00 am might have a change in its average life expectancy; the average life expectancy for the selected group might decrease by 15 years. Nothing can be said about individuals in that group as their life expectancies will differ depending on other factors.

One problem with having a conversation here is that there are differing levels of education among members and some are "too smart too learn".

If you google "life expectancy of early risers" you will get a number of articles discussing this subject.

They all tend to indicate that early risers live longer.

That was not my issue, my issue was with interpreting statistics.

"Morning People May Live Longer Than Night Owls"

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/12/well/mind/morning-people-may-live-longer-than-night-owls.html

This article discusses some of the health issues involved.

According to sleep expert on Diary of a CEO youtuber... you will die 15 yrs early getting up at that hour. Akin to shift worker....

I'm gonna bet that isn't what was said.

Just because of what statistical and probabilistic conclusions usually state.

Something like "on average, those who rise at 3:00am have an expectation of a decrease in lifespan of 15 years".

So probably nobody said "Scouse123 will die 15 years early".

It is a different thing being said.

It seems many foreigners try to live in a perfect world. Until one day they discover that the real world is far away from perfect.

Most Thai people wouldn't cross a street only because the light for pedestrians is green. They would pay attention even if there is a zebra crossing. Basically, no Thais use bicycles - the exception is the Lycra crowd.

Many foreigners do all that. And then accidents happen. And then questions come up like: How could that happen?

My personal advice: Don't play the hero and have the sentence "he was right" on your gravestone.

You points are well taken but...

"Basically, no Thais use bicycles "

This depends on where you live I think.

I see a dozen riders a day in the hour that I am taking a walk.

Not the lycra crowd, old beater bikes that the lycra crowd wouldn't be caught dead on.

Among them are two young ladies who apparently work together, wear same uniform and ride one-handed holding umbrellas for sun protection, like something out of a Thai Mary Poppins.

Some of these bikes gotta be 40 years old with big old fenders on them and kickstands and baskets etc.

But my neighborhood doesn't have much traffic and the Thai authorities (who ever they are) have blessed our neighborhood with many speed bumps so motorized vehicles go slow.

  10. Before I moved here I watched some of the "10 best tips for living in Thailand" videos.

Many had the advice, "Don't get in a fight in a bar".

That would signal time to quit the video as it made me think the presenter was an idiot or his target audience was idiots.

Who needs to be told not to get in a fight in a bar?

  11. I tip the parking lot attendants that flag me a taxi at the grocery store 40 baht.

Working near the market I shop for some groceries almost every day.

I can sit at the store entrance and they walk across the parking lot to the street and get a taxi.

I don't know if everybody tips them but it's worth it to me.

    They seem to appreciate it.

The sad and confused icons are a waste of time.

A thumbs down or minus icon would make more sense if people want to show they don't agree with a particular post.

I use the Plus icon a lot to show my agreement with posts; and the laugh icon if the post is funny, or sometimes if I think the post is laughable (as in I think the poster is talking nonsense)

But who the hell is confused by a post or reads something fact based and responds with a sad emoji?

There are clearly some very strange people out there.

"But who the hell is confused by a post or reads something fact based and responds with a sad emoji?"

This is what's known as "asking for it".

So expect sads and confuseds on your future posts.

    By the way,

    what do historians know?

Personally I would trust the opinion of a Asean Now forum member some of whom have never even been in the States , over some evaducated Historian.

And never mind what trump has done so far. Who worries what kind of job a person they want to hire has done in the past.

"Who worries what kind of job a person they want to hire has done in the past. "

    Uh, everyone.

(Hard to tell when someone is being ironic here because of the crazy opinions expressed by some.)

  14. I live in an affluent suburb of Bangkok. There is a much used walking path (really a low traffic loop of city streets) very near to where I live.

I walk there several times a week. Maybe half of the walkers say hello. About a third of them introduce themselves, ask my name, ask after my well-being etc. In general they chat and joke with me as far as their English proficiency allows.

There are some who I thought standoffish until I said hi to them first and then they turned out to be friendly.

These are largely retired folks and from all appearances well-to-do if not wealthy.

There is only one out of about 30 regular walkers who seems to feel superior (at least it seems that way).

These are people who could easily look down on me as a foreigner, they may not be HI-SO but they are definitely not low status individuals.

So my thinking is that just like anywhere, xenophobia, snobbishness, and maybe just a desire to be left alone exist but are certainly not universal among Thais.
