  1. Back when i had a land line i either dialed 0 or 100 for an operator, got my self to an English speaking one, then said i wanted to make a collect call to the US gave the overseas collect call # of the back of the Bank/ATM/Credit card and was connected no problem.

If you're Thai is good enough you might be able to do it with out an English speaking operator...

hmmm well accept for that part where he/she asks their Us counter part to accept the charges...

I also remember this worked severla times when I had a purchase dispute and then when i tried again some time later (like a year later)

apparently operator assistance was an extra that my Thai land lord failed to pay up.

The Int'l ATT&T operator sound like a good safe bet

  2. Are there any specific shops that sells specially designed apparels for us gays? I do wish to have something that could express myself as who i am, what i am openly. To have our own style of clothing that defines us. :o

Not sure if it's what you're looking for but you may want to check out Dsquared2

    http://www.dsquared2.com/

See if it floats your boat

It's two brothers from new york who design.

Central in Phuket has an outlet by them, they may also have one in BKK.

  3. :o DISGUSTING!

Can someone highlight this to the media?

I will forward on this forum to two of my friends high up in the Phuket Post.

I didn't know all about the scamming, I've only had experience with their kamikaze, road hogging, light flashing, high speed reckless driving behavior.

  4. Greenhouse

And Horizons Learning Center are great alternative to BIC they are also taught by native english speakers.

Horizons doen't yet have a web site up so contact them through green house.

    Greenhouse = little kids

Horizons = older kids ( i think currently the oldest kid at Horizons is around 13)

  5. I've brought an expensive bicycle from a German manufacturer with me to Phuket (Stevens). A couple of spokes on the rear wheel broke, where can I take the bike in Phuket to get it fixed properly?

Go to the Talang Bike Shop in ... Talang.

The owner is a good man named K. Pai-toon. Speaks English well, and has good prices.

The Talang Bike shop is the one used by all the athletes and Tri-athletes on the island.

He sets up a tent every year at the Laguna Phuket Triathlon and carries only quality components and Brand name bikes (Trek, Kline, GT, Mongoose and others)

    To find the shop:

It's on the outbound side of Thepkasstri Rd. going towards the Airport. Out Side the Shop hangs a Green framed Bicycle with wheels. (it's hard to see so look sharp)

The Best land mark though is, on the opposite side of the road there is a Govn't Building with a long red brick wall that runs along the front. At the end of the red brick wall across the street is the Talang bike shop.

Example of Service: Depending on how busy he is and how many are in the que before you you should get you bike back in 1-4 days.

I dropped off my mountain bike and had it cleaned, oiled, tuned up, new chain and replaced spokes and the whole deal only cost me 500-600THB.

It's a Great Shop Give it a Go you won't be disappointed.

  6. Dear UBC My List of Demands,

Upgrade you Set top Box it is at least 3 generations behind the rest of the world and your neighbors.

Give us a decent usable EPG (electronic program guide) that will display more than just an hour into the future. And have it change to the channel i placed a reminder on instead of asking me if i want to change it.

Make the set top box a DVR (this is to compensate for time difference sports events and the movie channels showing crap when I'm at home and good stuff when I'm asleep or at work.

That little Mail feature that the current boxes have, USE IT!!! tell me when there's going to be a service outage, tell me of new features/channels, tell me when my bill is due, use the feature that came with the hardware.

I know you've opened up some advertising, i see it on AXN and Discovery. Want to make some money?? Want to lower our rates?? solicit/put up local advertising how about a Siam Commercial bank Ad , True Internet ad, (insert Thai bank, vehicular manufacturer, or cell phone company of your choice here) ad.

I want more channels for what I'm paying for. I can list a few suggestions; Discovery Travel and living, TLC, UBC Series 2 (you know you can do it) Discovery Health, A&E, Nickalodian, Disney,

And though i doubt it i would go Ape Sh*t for Comedy Central

I like to know how i can influence HBO/Cinimax/Starmovies programming decisions(UBC is putting better programing on their movie channel then the others IMHO)

If i have to watch (actually i don't watch and i'm paying for it) one more Direct to DVD B-movie about the Komoto Vs the cyborg anaconda secret government forces project in the Bermuda triangle while tunneling to the earth's core to save us all from a killer earth quake that can only be stopped by a nucular weapon I'm going to flip!!!

Oh, and who is going to save us, that's right Steven Sugal

Now my comment on the MTV/VH1 thing

I wasn't aware that MTV wasn't already a Thai Pop channel. I rarely, if ever found Eng lang programming on it.

I did however watch VH1 and i will miss it. I live in Phuket where we have no English radio. While i do have an extensive music collection i do like to hear something new now and then and now aside from the net and watching the charts to see what's new i'll have no other way to experience new music. Yes it's sad that you depend on VH! for new music but i'm sort of limited for choice out here.

  7. Don't know if they have an outlet in Pattiya but in Phuket and BKK there is a pet store called ShamuShamu

    http://www.shamushamu.com/

It's the biggest store with the most varity of foods, toys, and accessories for dogs, cats, birds, rodents & fish.

They have tons of toys for birds. Lots of their stuff is imported. they also do their own magazine which is also a catolouge. anything that you see in ther and want they can order and get for you.

I even think they will ship what ever you need to you.

The title of the mag is "Sh@mu" It's available in various bookstores around thailand.

I noticed their page is down but try again later or call the BKK number.

I found a back door into the site (thank you google)

    http://www.shamushamu.com/CoolStuff.htm

i guess they're renovating their site but you can still brows arounf the old site, they've replaced the home page/index but the rest of the site has not been removed yet. I dont' know how effectively it works or if links and images are broken but it can give you an idea of what it's about.

Do you run an Air-con ever? theat will help dry out some of the air.

I don't know really know where to buy a de-humidifier here.

One place i do know is Suwntuee (SP?) Aircon I'll com back and provide the contact info.

My other guess is. look to the boating industry suppliers for a de-humidifer. I know they got them on ships, but don't know that the cost is.

    good luck

and can you post back the rang of pices you get for any de-humidifers you come across. If affordable I may bick one up myself.

  9. Here is good Q&A form the Phuketgazette online in phuket RE 3G...at least in Phuket

    Link to Original artical: Link

    3G and WiFi in Phuket

After being away from Phuket for a few years, I am coming back soon for three weeks. While I am in Phuket I will need near-constant access to the Internet via my BlackBerry PDA phone and my laptop with 3G [third-generation] data card.

Do any networks over there support 3G, or is there a reliable wireless network in Phuket that is unfiltered and supports VPN (Virtual Private Network)?

I am a network administrator for a firm of architects, and we are starting design work for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. I will need to connect to our servers via Remote Desktop to monitor and do preventative maintenance very often.

    Thanks for your help.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Phuket is way behind the times with 3G telephone systems. As you probably already know, 3G is advanced mobile-phone technology at eye-popping high speed.

A 3G mobile phone can download songs in seconds. A 3G PDA can surf websites at ADSL speeds. Plug a 3G card, also called an “Air Card”, into your computer and you have very fast wireless ADSL that’s accessible anywhere within 3G phone coverage.

Shin Corporation was slated to spend 40 billion baht on upgrading its mobile phone system to 3G over three years. Or at least that was the plan until Shin was acquired by Temasek Holdings, a company wholly owned by the Singaporean government.

Just a few weeks ago, Thailand’s National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) put new operating licenses “on hold” until it could sort out the mess surrounding Temasek Holdings, its affiliate Kularb Kaew, ownership percentages, and the like.

The issue is whether foreigners – who can’t own a square centimeter of land in this country – can own Thailand’s largest telecommunication backbone.

With the caretaker government’s NTC preoccupied, and new regulations impossible until the current political impasse is resolved and there is a real government in place, it seems unlikely that any progress will be made on 3G services in Bangkok for quite some time. You might want to check back after the Games in 2012.

In Phuket, CAT is experimenting with a specific kind of 3G known colloquially as CDMA2000 1XEV-DO – commonly called “dee-oh” (click here for details).

CAT had one tower in Kata running DO for a while. I haven’t heard any other news, so it’s likely that CAT is mired in the same NTC bog as everybody else.

CAT had plans to install 35 DO towers on Phuket, effectively covering about 90% of the island’s population. The original plan called for unlimited 2.4 Mbps service at 990 baht a month. If that plan ever comes true, the entire nature of Internet access on Phuket will change overnight – and a lot of people will be selling their old 2G mobile phones, cheap.

There are reliable WiFi hotspots all over Phuket. Some of them, including the one in my Sandwich Shoppe in Patong, are both fast and free.

Although every Internet Service Provider in Thailand is required to block certain sites, I haven’t heard of any problems establishing VPN connections. There may be some filtering with the major commercial WiFi providers, but the free WiFi hotspots shouldn’t have any problems at all.

In short, welcome back to Phuket and remember – a slow line here is better than a fast line anywhere else. ”

  14. I took a look at the programing for Mulity choice and Astro it's not bad but i guess i've come to like the programing UBC offers.

I'd be tempted to switch if i could find out that somone other than UBC could offer AXN or could tell me that I'd be able to watch Survivor.

  15. Ok so i'm not the most knolowdegable about it but help me out here...

Do all Sat-TV companies in the USA have Birds with a Geosynchronous Orbit? Or are there any that just keep floating and make their way around the gloab and the signal is supplied by a steady stream of birds?

(my gut says no as it would be expensive to have that may birds and your dish would have to track the birds)

But if they do move. Is it possable with a bird that can give coverage to

    Florida — Latitude: 24 30'N to 31 N or the State of Hawaii — Latitude: 18°55'N to 29°N

to hit Phuket?? 7'45" and 8'15" North latitude

Further more if Phuket is in the coverage area can i purchase a setup from the US (Direct TV or Dish Network) to view TV here??
