  1. I’ve Test Driven a Suzuki Grand Vitara (Drove well, had 4WD, but inside was cramped /sardine can)

Ford is the parent company of Land Rover and Mazda

So the Escape , Tribute and Freelander all come from similar stock. (The particular freelander I’ve driven was a little bit different, it’s got a BMW diesel engine in it)

So I’ve had experience with a Honda CRV, Land Rover Freelander, and Mazda Tribute

Haven’t’ driven an Escape but I know it’s nice and a good buy.

The CRV is fine but I notice it lacked power going up and down the hills in Phuket.

The Freelander is a great ride but it’s price tag can be a turn off, Also if something breaks be prepared to wait for parts to arrive form over seas.

The Mazda Tribute is a good vehicle IMHO It’s got a bigger engine than the CRV and has More ommph

It’s a little bit cheaper than the CRV, I’m not sure how it compares in price to the escape. It looks good to me and you can take it off road if you need to.

By comparison I drive a New Toyota Helix Vigo 4WD (I need it cause I work where there aren’t roads sometimes) 4 Door and I put a Carryboy on the back so I can lock my stuff up and nobody bothers it.

I really like it and I’m still amazed even with the big engine how it sips diesel, must be that funky intercooler they got on it.

The only down side is that it’s BIG. Turning radius is bad but not horrible and it’s a bitch to park. Aside form that I love it.

  2. Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good web site or two that will display weather readings for Phuket?

Ideally I’d like a Doppler raider map (animated would be nice) with a satellite overlay option.

I found one once before for Thailand but it was for the whole county and Phuket was this little speck in the bottom Left.

I’d like to center it over Phuket so that I can see developing systems and weather they’re heading straight for us or not, or if we’re going to get the tail whip of a storm.

A normal reading of highs and lows is fine, but I'm mainly interested in precipitation

  3. Hi Ciggie, that would be awesome if i could only get the thing to work, keeps saying:

"Sorry, but this script has been called from a domain that is not authorized to use this script."

Are you using Fire Fox with the No-Script extension?

    Enable scripts on that page.

    just guessing might work?

    Surfing

Surin has some nice waves but it's a short break and they brke almost on the shore line

Kamala - Depending on the day I've noticed some large swell and ususally about 8-16 people out surfing in the North end of Kamala Bay.

  4. Probably overstating the obvious here but...

ITV reported that the vehicle was driven back and forth near Thaksin's residence and a security guard of the prime minister urged police to chase and stop it.

    The Nation

The bomb-loaded car with the license plate ฐฉ-3085 was parked along Sirindhorn (สิรินธร) Road, 300 meters far away from Bang Phlat (บางพลัด) intersection and 400 meters from the premier’s residence.

Source: Thai National News Bureau Public Relations Department - 24 August 2006

You there Chase that parked car! :D:D:D

It must have been a thrilling chase sequence for our boys in brown.

Further more, I know traffic in BKK is bad, but based on the photos this car was parked in the middle of the road?!? :o

  5. >Except for baggage. I'm intrigued year after year that my bags are allowed to go straight through

    >to the second airport, after arriving at an entry point in US, where they are picked up as routine

    >domestically-travelled bags without inspection by Customs or the added scrutiny of an

    >international flight arrival.

Which US port of entry does this? Everytime that I travel back to the States, every piece of baggage must be picked up on the belt, cleared through customs, and then re-checked with the airline (at a special area just outside of customs) for the onward domestic flight.

    -Jeff

Yes which Airport? Going through LAX or JFK or EWR i have to (in this order) clear immagration, clear customs, re check my bags on to their final destination.

The final re-check bag is not painful in LAX as after you pass customs you just chuck it back on a conveyor belt. I don't remember what it's like at JFK or EWR. They're usually my final destination and I don't have a connectiong flight from there.

  6. My 2 cents for execelent dog training tips try to watch UBC's Channel 64 (Adventure 1) for a program called "The Dog Whisperer"

Cheezey title I know, but it's a good show and the Dog Trainer really works some magic with "problem Dogs"

I've picked up some good tips from watching it.

    It's usually on around 20:00

a quick search reviels these show times (scroll to the bottom)

  7. Baby girl born @ Bangkok – Phuket Hospital 1 year ago

In my Opinion BKK-HKT Hospital is the finest one on the island but that also comes with a steep price.

If you want the best go to BKK-HKT if you want also very good and comparable got to Phuket International hospital.

In any event your should tour both these hospitals and also give mission hospital a look at.

Top 3 on the island in my own personal opinion ( I believe also ranked by price)

    Bangkok-Phuket Hospital http://www.phukethospital.com/

    Phuket International Hospital http://www.phuket-inter-hospital.co.th/

    Mission Hospital Phuket http://www.mission-hospital.org

Rough prices given by the hospital (This is form memory so may not be exact + for some reason it’s hard for them to give you a straight answer on price, they’ll give you a range )

    Natural birth package 30,000THB

    Planned C-section 60,000THB

The above prices are also subject to certain surcharges such as your room preference (Super deluxe, Deluxe, Standard, Ward) and if there are complications requiring additional Meds or procedures. If you want local anesthesia or the spinal block. There are many factors that can affect the cost.

Top notch Hospital, looks more like a hotel then a hospital.

Started our pre-natal care there, and switched doctors once (old doctor –female- was fine but the one we switched to a male Dr. who had studied in America and his English was better and we felt more comfortable with him.)

Our Experience at the Bangkok Phuket hospital:

Arrived at the Hospital with appointment for inducing labor (wife was 3 weeks overdue) 10am Saturday

Doctor administers oxytosin to induce labour at 11am wife hooked up to fetal monitor. (Note for some stupid reason the mattresses on the beds in the pre-labor room are ridiculously thin, less then 2 inch. I recommend bringing a futon with you or getting them to upgrade your pre-labour room mattress long before you get there. Start complaining in the 8th month when you take a tour of the facilities.

Wife is hooked up to fetal monitoring equipment and contractions start small and far apart.

Little progress is made and my wife is taken off the drugs at 10pm so she can get some sleep that night (yeah right) Though off the labour inducing drug she continues to have small contractions during the night and doesn’t sleep well because of them and the hard bed.

Next morning Sunday 8am my wife is placed back on the oxytosin and WHAM contractions started hitting in a big way.

Demoral shot in the butt right away, followed by one the next hour and the next.

Wife’s water broken for her at about 10am

10:30 am contradictions intense epidural administered. It took a while to put in as it’s a delicate procedure and you have to be very still so the anesthesiologist had to work in-between contractions.

Doctor noticed drop in heart rate with contraction for the baby and prepped his surgical team. (since the Dr. prepped his team wife could have the bikini-line c-section)

Heart rate dropped again each time for the next 5 contractions. Dr. made the decision for C-section

Wife prepped for c-section, I’m allowed in the OR.

“Can you feel this” doctor pressing on abdomen and poking toes

“Yes”, replies my wife, “just give me what it would take to knock our a 300 lbs man” My wife has a high pain medication resistance.

The doctor asks if he should knock her our? I say give the meds 5 more minutes. So, after double the dose of epidural it finally takes effect after a few minutes.

11:22am c-section preformed, Dr. shows me cord wrapped around the baby’s neck. (Dr. made absolutely the right call for C-Section) and out comes baby. I get to cut the cord. And follow the baby to the nursery where it is weighed and examined and given oxygen.

They hold on to the baby to monitor for awhile and we get her back in our Super Deluxe room at 18:00

So after 5 day stay in hospital and lots of meds for the failed natural birth and anesthesia and everything else the total bill came out to 85,000THB

My wife says for the next one we’re just going in for the planned C-section package.

  9. Check out these 2 websites regarding acquiring Thai nationality from the Dept of Foreign Affairs. They are in Thai though so you will have to drag someone who is a Thai lawyer to explain this to you. To me it's very confusing. But from what I understand, your child may be eligible for Thai citizenship.

    http://www.mfa.go.th/web/206.php (Pay particular attention on clause 7 - 2.)

    http://www.mfa.go.th/web/198.php

OK, What I gather (or what my friend tells me) I need to have 3 consecutive 1 year visas, Apply for a residency permit and receive it (difficult with a Government quota of only 100 pax a year :o ) and then I can apply for my daughter’s Thai citizenship.

Not sure if both parents are required to have residency.

I’ll investigate more and report my findings.

  10. My wife and I are legal aliens in Thailand. (Non Im-B/Work permit and Non Im-O respectively)

Non-im-visa specifies it already, non-immigrant, i.e. not legal aliens.

If both (foreign) parents are legal aliens than the child can be Thai.

Sorry, I guess I meant to stress the fact that we are residing here legally with visas and permits and were not just on holiday here.

  11. My wife and I are legal aliens in Thailand. (Non Im-B/Work permit and Non Im-O respectively)

I have lived in Thailand for about 4 years now. My Daughter was born 1 year ago @ Bangkok-Phuket Hospital. She has about every conceivable birth certificate and registered certified translation possible in both Thai and English. (Had to get all the done doing the BKK shuffle to get her a US Passport)

Her Original document was a Thai Birth Certificate.

When my child was born some of the hospital staff told me I could apply for Thai citizenship/passport for my daughter because she was born in Thailand.

They also added that I needed to have 3 consecutive 1 year visas to apply. ( I was a couple of months short at the time from the end of my third year)

My Question: Is it possible for my child, born in Thailand with Thai Birth certificate to become a Thai Citizen? What are the Requirements for both her and me?
