Let's be a bit benevolent: Trump could not anticipate it because nobody talked about it on Fox News. ????

China . China , Chinese virus he has a stuck record like some posters on here. At least he is at last following his officials rather relying on his own innate genius and his seems to have pushed Pencey out of the lead role. Sadly the poor health of many Americans and lack of medical facilities is going to extract a steep toll on the US.

I know Nick Nostitz, I used to occasionally have a beer with him and Blenkinsop back when Bangkok was a place to enjoy.

He seems like an allround decent guy - hounded out of Thailand by the Junta and their thugs. His Bangkok bar scenes photos are eye-poppers !

My thoughts?  Stop all this over reaction.  Let it run its course.  If 2 % of the population die, so be it.   The virus is like a giant electrical signal.  It will find the shortest path.  You try and close off this path (tourism), or airlines, and all that happens is people and the virus will go somewhere else.  Now you close businesses, shut down cities, etc.   People can not work, lose money, businesses fail, no GRE or SAT testing so people can not get into schools or colleges.  People in college can not graduate, lose current job offers or future job offers.  And some required courses offered every other year now delay things.  Kids home from school ratchets up tensions in a house hold.  Dual working parents now have to sort out child care during the day or lose their jobs.  So now their kids are in contact with other people anyway while out of school.  The long term effects can be quite daunting and might kill more people than the virus.  Look at the financial markets.  Billions if not Trillions up in smoke.

Now add in the number of elderly people that are living but really not in good or strong health.  Very un natural for a species.  They sit around in the reclining chair all day, watch Jerry Springer, minds go to mush as they do less every day.  Many are in care facilities that drain a family's finances, or are at home with a  younger relative and that can strain things quite a bit.   Is society better off with so many aged?  It may sound in humane, but until you see friends or relatives linger for years and years and how it affects a house hold, you may not understand.

You are a pleasant chap aren't you. Nothing like a virus to bring out the misanthropes and eugenistics. You will be pleased to know Hitler agreed with your analysis. The weak , mentally deficient and undesirables get rid of 'em. My solution - eat the rich.

He has quite a stuck record there. Hopefully his OCD will be useful when it comes to hand washing. They should call it the Burmese Virus in Thailand for xenophobic consistency.

Can you believe this photo is actually on the PM's official Facebook feed ? Because it actually is....the translated comments below it are also a scream. Note the no photo sign as well !

This was more or less the idea of Boris Johnson  and his advisors.

    See the video Larry posted.

The modeling study of the Imperial College that was published a couple of days ago calculated that with this approach the UK would have about half a million deaths from Covid19, the US about 2.2 millions. Thailand was not modelled.

For 8 people who couldn't breathe and needed a ventilator to survive,  there would be 1 (one) ventilator available.

As a consequence from this study,  the UK changed it's approach and is introducing measures of social distancing (social distancing are things like school closures,  prohibition of gatherings and crowds,  restriction of travel and movements, even lock downs).

During SARS, the only thing that worked was social distancing.

Unfortunately,  the study of the Imperial College also predicted that for SARS2-Covid19 social distancing would be necessary for much longer than a couple of weeks, see Larry's video. They are talking of school closures for 5 months. Which society would stomach this?

Take your pick or find something better.

    A society that doesn't look after it's  old and weak isn't a society, it's a jungle.

    1) send weak and old to isolate. They the problem. Good for them. If they sick many will die.

    2) the young and strong can work. Good for economy. If they sick, same as cold, not many die.

Save the people, save the economy.

    win with Yinn!

We have sent our weak and old to Thailand Yinn , please look after them well. Farang need take care. If the government really wanted to help they could drop the beer and wine tax to zero for the duration of the crisis and spread a little good cheer.

  7. BREAKING - Secret US Govt plan leaked to the web.

A federal government plan to combat the coronavirus warned policymakers last week that a pandemic “will last 18 months or longer” and could include “multiple waves,” resulting in widespread shortages that would strain consumers and the nation’s health care system.

The 100-page plan, dated Friday, the same day President Trump declared a national emergency, laid out a grim prognosis for the spread of the virus and outlined a response that would activate agencies across the government and potentially employ special presidential powers to mobilize the private sector.

Exactly...which is why so many of the most vocal contributors to the “all is well in Thailand” chorus should be summarily discounted.

Social unrest of some sort is sort of baked in at this stage. How far it will go and how bloody it maybe will be down to how much faith is put in the army and whether the levers of the dinosaurs still work. Pondering if mid-ranking army might turn al la 1932 if so that could be good for everybody (dinosaurs excepted). Well that's my hope anyway. If that happens there's a huge pot of real money to bring to Thailand's table.

Cash is a potential problem though - in a bank - a bank run  , a bank holiday and a government haircut down the line for the small guys. I'm buying a Rolex tmrw - better than gold and easy to hide. Plus wine and spirits I'm buying those like there's no tomorrow in the UK - that is MONEY.

You have absolutely hit the nail on the head, this medical crisis will pass. Eventually a vaccine will be found. However, the true financial implications of this virus are still to come and will be with us long after the virus is vanquished.

We are already seeing German trade unions clamouring for additional hand outs for employees and the German governments at local and national level look to be ready to bend over and give the panicked electorate whatever it wants. So we can see an increase in debt for Germany, granted not to the obscene levels of the UK, but the virus will have a similar effect on borrowing for Germany.

The real crunch time will be if there is any real issue with the financial system, as a result of multiple large company failures. If people start withdrawing their money from banks in a bank run to save their cash it could be real bad.

But then Germany overcame hour zero in 1945, so this should be a cake walk.

Very true especially your last sentence. Buckle in the ride is going to get rough from now in.

Can you elaborate on this point please? What do you mean specifically?

No problem it refers to the process where investment banks and other entities such as hedge funds create instability in the world by creating a multitude of financial products, processes and services which are engineered to make them as rich as possible whilst diluting the social nature of capital and 'normal' investment. It's money making money rather than money making things. Essentially these guys are parasites on the normal productive nature of society and yet they are the richest guys on the planet. When the dust settles they will be targets as the scramble to defend their ill-gotten wealth. They will fail.

    Understanding Financialization
In the United States, the size of the financial sector as a percentage of gross domestic product has grown from 2.8 percent in 1950 to 7.9 percent in 2012. Financialization has also caused incomes to increase more in the financial sector than in other sectors of the economy. Individuals working in the U.S. finance sector have experienced a 70 percent increase in their incomes relative to workers in other sector since 1980.

But this is it. This is the world we live in now. And in this world, some of us have to play by the rules, while others get a note from the principal excusing them from homework till the end of time, plus 10 billion free dollars in a paper bag to buy lunch. It’s a gangster state, running on gangster economics, and even prices can’t be trusted anymore; there are hidden taxes in every buck you pay. And maybe we can’t stop it, but we should at least know where it’s all going.

Lol, the German goverment has shown shocking incompetence.

As early as 2012 the Robert Koch Institute in a paper anyone can read online warned of an epidemic due to a SARS-like coronavirus.

Since 2012 the German government could have prepared for this scenario. It of course did nothing. They have failed us and risked lives with their incompetence.

Now they take the measures that should have been taken long ago. The German government is like these fools who did not prepare for bad times but in a space of days want to go panic buying to make good their deficiency, thereby creating problems for everyone else.

I have ZERO confidence in this woman's ability to handle this crisis. She knew since January that a case happened in Germany. She did not stop flights, she did not check anybody, nothing was done. NOTHING.  Lufthansa out of themselves had to end flights to China. Meanwhile dozens of flights from China were arriving each day, entering unchecked.

The current border sealing is a JOKE. Commuters are waved through. I mean the response of the German government is so bad, it is actually worse than England's.

At least the British are holding serious Cobra press conference and Boris Johnson does more than address the populace in solemn tv speeches without serious questioning.

In the end success will be written in how many you saved from an early death and whether your economy recovers and social order is maintained. I wouldn't bet against Germany on that score. Empty nationalistic rhetoric will seem doubly hollow in the aftermath and leaders that failed at this challenge will face the blind wrath of fury of the populace. Our healthcare workers and essential workers will be heroes to all.  My biggest worry now isn't the Chinese virus which will eventually be defeated but the American virus of financialization of the planet. Trump's cabinet is stuffed with Goldman alumni lest we forget.

Wow! This is graph and other sources you quote are amazing, so great .... Shocking but amazingly great!

I have to add after listening to Fox News of late (just a bit as I can't help but be curious as a retired psychotherapist about such organisational psyche's), and after watching that mini-series about Roger whatshisname who ran Fox ... I'm surprised at the graph you so kindly provide for us all ... shows a stark picture indeed!!

Fox has a rhetoric (clear and unmistakable) that its Obama who left a shocking economy and that Trumps govt has really turned this around and 'saved' America's economy ....

Hmmm. So whos telling lies? All these sources, or Trump and Fox?

Oh! Wait I know the answer to those (Fox's line of rhetoric) <deleted> and Trump haters, those of the Left who are really not true Patriots but underminers of True Patriots like Trump and others who call themselves Republicans that make such graphs up out of lies and spin as a part of the paranoia and obsessional need to undermine a President who is all-the-way-for-the-USA.

Love to hear your response to my thoughts as a Non-American on what I've added to your post.

He pumped up the ponzi even more now it's blowing. Russia is keeping suspiciously quiet in all this madness with a people well schooled in misery and stoicism.
