I was an ag volunteer in the Peace Corps from 1977-1979.  My Thai advisor told me that when he found out I was vegetarian.  I've seen misuse of pesticides first-hand.  Wan't there a foreign tourist who died from picking up insecticide from walking barefoot in a hotel room?

I used to specifically order food - no pork oil, no fish sauce, no meat or fish broth, etc.  Some people got it, others had difficulty understanding.

Thanks for recommending my website! :) I hope it is useful.

  2. Nong Hoi is safe in my experience but make sure you rent a house not too near the river as it can be prone to flooding in some of the lower areas, at the least make sure the house you rent has a raised bit which most of them do. Absolutely agree with the others about getting friendly with the neighbours, introduce yourself, bring them something occasionally, and smile and say hello to all the neighbours who live on your soi. A friendly face will go down well with them.

Also, as others have said, a lot of police checks especially on the Mahidol Road/Lamphun Road intersection so make sure all of your documents are in order etc, keep your driving licence with you as if you don't have it on you that day they can and will fine you!

  3. Nakornpayap International School is within the city, not affiliated with a religion and accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. www.nis.ac.th

You might also want to consider their sister school, on the same complex, NAPA, if you want to keep up the Thai, as they are a bi-lingual school. NAPA has recently extended through elementary, up to G6.

  4. I have recently started using this company - https://www.facebook.com/cmbread?fref=ts and are finding them very good. They do all kinds of white and wholemeal loaves, baguettes as well as delicious hummus and all natural peanut butter. Also, their products are cheap (better value than from Rimping) and are 100% vegan. This has been excellent for me as buying from the other places on here has proved a problem due to the ingredients they contain. This company also deliver to your house! I thought I'd let people know in case anyone else can take this advantage. By the way, I have no affiliation with them other than being a customer and want them to get more so that they will stay in business and I can continue to order bread from them!

    Cheers

Thanks Dee ,thats very interesting to me,i will work out a decent order

and i will freeze it,lasts a long time in the freezer and if it goes in fresh

its just as good when it comes out, just dont want them delivering 2 loafs.

    regards worgeordie

Yes that's a good idea I'm also going to be freezing mine. I think they like you to order 2 loaves at a time anyway to get the delivery for free, but if not I think it's only 10 BAHT.

  6. None of you can call yourselves true alchies if you find these 'dry' spells a problem. Firstly, you should always have a back-up supply prepared, failing that, prepare to stock up before such an event. Failing that, just buy it from the mom and pop store.

    I'm not having any problem.

    Cheers!!

  7. Why are so many people not able to be social drinkers? Look at the people who cannot even sit on a plane for 12 hours without alcohol. I am so glad I never started.

Sent from my GT-S5360 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Why would you want to sit on a plane for 12 hours without alcohol?? It is one of the only times that it is free flowing, I paid enough for the flight, I will make the most of it. Also makes the 12 hours go a lot quicker.

  8. I'd like to add another vote for Rajavej. I recently broke my arm and went there due to recommendations. I had surgery and was there for a few days and was completely satisfied with everything. I heard other people complain about some aspects of RAM, and they were not encountered for me at Rajavej. I will always use Rajavej in the future.

Before I started using Rajavej I went to Lanna as an outpatient once, and I noticed they charge extortionate prices in their pharmacy.

  9. Yes!!

It has been open just a couple of days and I absolutely love it. It is more expensive than the typical Thai ones but it has many other advantages such as:

    1) Not just open until lunchtime but open 7 days per week until 8PM!

    2) They use all organic local produce

    3) Wide variety of Thai dishes but also includes western style salads with amazing dressings

    4) Do not use that soya protein fake meat stuff

    5) Very dry and no oil

Please go, I really want them to get good business. By the way I have no affiliation with this establishment other than it has just opened up and it is right near my house, it is the best!

I regularly eat at three 'Ahan Jay' restaurants:

One on Huay Keow rd - just across from CMU (great Tom Yam Hed - mushroom).

One on the right - 100 meters inside from Chiangmai Gate (great mushrooms!)

My favourite - On Chang Phuak rd going north - just before Superhighway on the left

You should try the new organic vegie place inside of plaza 89 food square. Serving delicious food and nice salads with tempeh

  10. There are loads of Thai based running clubs, the biggest ones being Dton Yaang Running Club and Chang Phueak Runners. You will not find out much on the web about these groups. You will be better off by attending one of the local races and then talking to the club members themselves, they are MOSTLY Thai, and speak little English, but would welcome more western runners to the groups. You can easily spot them as they will all be wearing the tee-shirts for their respective clubs. Your preferred group to join might depend on whereabouts you live... I am not sure about how much training they do actually as a group though.

  11. I just came back from there and the parking was terrible!! Inside all the cars were doubled and blocking each other etc. Outside was possible, but meant walking up there in the rain.

In Rimping I was very impressed to find a vegetable spiraliser which was something that I have been trying to find for a really long time even in England! Although it was 895 BAHT which is a total rip-off. Their prices are ridiculous. Marmite is 330 BAHT per normal size jar whereas in Tops it is only 279 BAHT!

  12. I did my re-entry the other day so have found this thread to update as it seems to be the latest one. The desk is open 24 hours and it costs the normal price plus a couple of hundred baht extra more than it does at your local immigration office. If you live in Chiang Mai like me, it is well worth saving the nightmare that is at the local office. When I researched this before, I saw someone else write that this service should only be used in an emergency situation, totally disagree. I could not believe how fast and efficient it was. You do not need any photographs or forms or work permit either, they do everything for you.

You will see the desk after you check in and before you go through passport control. Obvously, you can only use the service if you are taking an international flight.

    Hope this is useful...

  13. a bit late but now there is the indoor climbing gym in chiang mai

    go for climbnogravity at facebook

No Gravity Indoor Climbing Gym has just been built and opened and it has different climbs for all levels and the last time I was there lots of my students were there Grade 1 and above. How to find it... from the moat take the corner with the road that leads down to JJ market and Tesco. Take that road and go past all the second hand shops and car garages and then you will see the tall red building on a side road to the right, before you get to JJ. Atsadathon Road, Chiang Mai, TH.

  14. I am now sure that Thai food sold at most of the place is unhealthy because too fat and anyway ALL thai sauces are full of shxt + salt.

The only healthy food anywhere in the world is boiled food and not so much of Thai food is just boiled.

I was used to eat any food even in the street but I quit after thinking twice about this unhealthy food.

    Boiled food?

    Must be a Brit!

England is known world wide for tasteless, bland food!

    bah.gif Yuck!

BTW, boiling removes most of what is good for you from food... vitamins and nutrients and flavor...who needs em? lol

There is the option of going raw. I try to eat raw fruitarian meals regularly and we are lucky in Thailand to have so many delicious fruits readily and cheaply available making it easy to do. Mangoes, papaya, mangosteen, jack fruit, yum yum.

I honestly think that there is no cuisine that is 100% good for you unless you go totally raw vegan. It is a matter of balance. I am vegan and eat Thai curries a lot but I don't see the problem with fatty coconut milk seeing as other than that it is packed full of veggies.

Saying that though, I also recently discovered 4Care brand rice bran milk. It works the same as coconut milk and acts as a replacement with four times as less fat.You can buy it from Tesco.

  15. Krupnik, thanks again.

Is there an English language version of the site you gave the link to?

Yep, you need to click on races first which you will see in English. Then you will see the option to switch to the English version at the top left of the page.

  16. Desertrose if you are interested in joining us for races in Chiang Mai, this is a good site to use: http://www.forrunnersmag.com/

It shows you the races all over Thailand, but you can specifically look down for the ones in Chiang Mai. Now it is hot season so there are only only about one a month but have a look at previous years to get an idea of the schedule and what will be coming up (usually around October time until March.)

If you want to join a group there are several mostly local Thai populated running groups such as Chang Phueak or we are Dton Yaang Running Club come and speak to any of us at the races. The races usually always start very early in the morning at about 4, 5, or 6 AM when the temperature is the best, so that will suit you. There is a big international marathon in Chiang Mai around Christmas.

Good luck and hope this is helpful!

  17. As mentioned the lake is very popular and you have two choices. You can run the inside route of the one moat which is about 4KM. Or, if you park down at the bottom right hand starting point (means you don't need to pay the 20 BAHT because you don't take your vehicle in) you can run around both lakes which is about 8KM or so in total. The route is a little hilly. There are loads of other small routes you can do if you want a track and don't mind doing repeats - the city stadium, as already mentioned, the small park on the moat opposite Suan Prung Mental Hospital, there is also Sompotch Park that is in the Don Chan area. Those three will require a lot of repeats though to get a decent train. I usually run from my house and then run around them and then run back to make it a decent train. All depends on where you live. The problem is that you need to wait until the sun goes down before the temperature is cool enough but then after it is fully dark most places are not lit. It means that you only have an hour or so in the evening that you can really go which can become quite convenient. The other thing to do is go very early in the morning which is actually the most perfect time to run but it all depends on your lifestyle and job, etc. About 6 AM is the best. At that time there is also no reason why you can't run on the roads, the middle ring road like someone else suggested is a good idea I run along there quite regularly.

By the way what marathon are you training for? We have several running groups here in Chiang Mai and in the cool season races of varying lengths (usually around 10KM) take place very regularly. I hope you will join!

    Cheers.
