UPDATE Hero Rescues Live Dog Buried Alive in Phuket Pictures courtesy of Daily News A heart-wrenching video has emerged showing a Siberian Husky being buried alive in Rawai, Phuket. Fortunately, a foreign hero arrived just in time to rescue the dog. The property's owner, also a foreign national, faces animal cruelty charges after claiming the dog was critically ill with no pulse. On 17th July, the well-known environmental Facebook page, "Monsoon Garbage," shared the distressing footage. It depicted a man rescuing the buried dog, while others lay languishing nearby. Following the incident, Rawai’s Mayor, Thames Kraitat, along with police and the Soi Dog Foundation, intervened. They discovered several exhausted dogs at the residence and transferred three to the foundation for rehabilitation and eventual rehoming. The foreign owner told authorities the dog was expected to die within three days due to severe illness, claiming it showed no vital signs before burial. However, the authorities remain sceptical and have charged him under Thailand's 2014 Animal Welfare Act. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Daily News 2025-07-17 -

Picture courtesy of Daily News A Korean YouTuber has taken the internet by storm with his 'Kappa' haircut and quirky dance moves on Pattaya Beach. Clips show the man hugging lampposts and swaying to music, causing passers-by to stop and laugh. Social media sleuths traced his haircut to Sixteen BarberShop at Central Marina, North Pattaya. On 17th July, a reporter visited the barber where the man's antics first went viral. The barber, Ice, aged 32, recalled the event. On 12th July, while waiting for customers, he noticed an Asian YouTuber filming himself dancing outside. The man later showed Ice a picture of the 'Kappa' hairstyle, asking for a live audience with his fans. Despite the unusual request, Ice obliged, creating the comical hairstyle in an hour and a half, leading to laughter from other customers. After the haircut, the YouTuber expressed his gratitude to Ice by performing a second impromptu dance in the shop, which added more humour and resulted in a 300-baht tip from one of his fans, in addition to the haircut fee. Ice defended the YouTuber, stating, "He's not crazy, just passionate about his content." The YouTuber recently returned seeking a colourful rainbow hairstyle, but was directed to a salon specialising in such. Reports later confirmed that he dyed his hair in vibrant rainbow colours, with pink eyebrows and red lips, topping it off by live-streaming a tasting of the popular 'Pad Bung Fai Daeng' dish. video screenshot PHUKET - IIn an appalling act of cruelty in Rawai, Phuket, a foreign resident has allegedly buried a dog alive, with only its head left above ground. The incident, which took place in Soi Suksan 1, has sparked widespread outrage across social media. The discovery was initially reported on 16th July 2568 by the Phuket Times Facebook page, showing a video of the desperate animal buried, appearing weak and barely conscious. The caption questioned the mentality behind such cruelty, labelling the act as the work of a "deranged foreigner." Local municipal officials, aided by concerned residents, quickly intervened to rescue the exhausted dog. They have since coordinated with the Soi Dog Foundation to ensure that the dog receives necessary medical attention and care. An investigation revealed that a foreign national living in the area was allegedly responsible. Evidence has been gathered, and legal action is being pursued to hold the individual accountable for this barbaric act. The online community has reacted with intense condemnation, including comments that describe the act as "heartless" and "vicious." People have expressed deep sympathy for the dog and expressed relief at its timely rescue. The rescued dog is currently in the temporary care of the Soi Dog Foundation, while authorities continue to investigate and take legal action against the accused. This distressing event serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities pet owners have and the need for vigilance in preventing animal cruelty. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Khaosod 2025-07-17

Politics Thaksin's Secret Mission: Inside the Hunt for Rebel MPs
webfact posted a topic in Thailand News
Thaksin Shinawatra | File photo In a bold, covert move, Thaksin Shinawatra has reportedly tasked a high-profile government figure with the mission to rally dissident MPs from the opposition. Sources reveal that Thaksin has persuaded nearly a dozen Bhumjaithai Party members to support the Pheu Thai-led government in Parliament. This comes amidst efforts to strengthen their hold in the face of opposition forces. The mysterious government operative is working to recruit individuals beyond just Bhumjaithai defectors. They are aiming to bolster Pheu Thai’s presence in Parliament by persuading MPs from other opposition factions to switch their allegiance. This aligns with Thaksin's confident stance that additional support could come from unexpected quarters, securing the passage of government legislation. Amid these political manoeuvres, Thaksin is also locked in a legal battle, seeking to clear Paetongtarn's and his daughter's names. Despite rumours suggesting Paetongtarn should step down to avoid a damaging court verdict, Thaksin remains committed to defending her position. The legal drama has garnered attention, particularly after a leaked conversation with Cambodian leader Hun Sen sparked accusations of treason against Paetongtarn. The stakes are high as the National Anti-Corruption Commission sets its sights on the suspended prime minister’s alleged ethical breaches. Meanwhile, Thaksin himself is contesting charges over a supposed deception during his hospital stay, potentially impacting his ongoing legal saga. Officials tied to this episode could face serious repercussions should misconduct be proven. Adding to his legal woes, Thaksin faces an impending verdict in a lese-majeste case concerning comments made about the monarchy. The political landscape remains uncertain as the plot deepens, with potential appeals likely on the horizon. This ongoing saga promises further complexities in the story of Thaksin and his intricate political legacy. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Thai Newsroom 2025-07-17 -

File photo In a landmark decision today, Thailand's House of Representatives passed the updated Labour Protection Act, granting female employees an astounding 120 days of paid maternity leave. Additionally, fathers can now enjoy 15 days of paid leave to assist with newborn care. The draft now heads to the Senate for review. This decision follows revisions made after the first reading, extending maternity leave from 98 to 120 days. A decisive vote saw 416 MPs in favour, with only one abstention and three MPs absent. This change aims to enhance the quality of life for employees and nurture family bonds. According to the new legislation, employers are required to cover 50% of a female employee's daily wage during her 120-day maternity leave. Meanwhile, male employees assisting with newborns will receive their full daily wage for up to 15 days. This progressive move represents a major shift in supporting working families. Analysis Trump’s 50-Day Pause: Russia’s Green Light for Ukraine Push
webfact posted a topic in World News
Picture courtesy of AP via CNN MOSCOW - In a surprising political manoeuvre, President Trump has granted Vladimir Putin a 50-day window to continue Russia’s offensive in Ukraine without immediate repercussions. The move delays sanctions, including threatened 100 percent tariffs on Russia, until early September, leaving Ukrainians to endure relentless missile and drone attacks. Although the Kremlin publicly deems the threatened sanctions and arms pledges to Ukraine “serious,” insiders in Moscow reportedly feel relief at the postponement. The delayed action gives Russia time to either advance its military objectives or wait for potential shifts in US policy. The Kremlin is undeterred by the prospective sanctions. With extensive experience in navigating international restrictions, Russia remains resilient. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed confidence in managing further sanctions, stating Russia is accustomed to such economic pressures. The pause in implementing sanctions provides Russia with an opportunity to bolster its military efforts in Ukraine. Some Russian officials believe the 50 days will provide ample time to make significant headway or wait for President Trump to reconsider his stance. While Russia capitalises on this delay, it’s concerned about the potential influx of US weapons into Ukraine. The agreement to supply Patriot missile defence systems poses a tangible threat to Russian military strategies, particularly its aerial assaults. Russia’s political figures are vocally criticising President Trump, accusing him of prolonging the conflict. On Kremlin-controlled state TV, Trump’s decision is compared to previous US administrations, suggesting scepticism about his strategies and intentions. As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, understanding that much can change on the battlefield and in diplomatic arenas within this critical 50-day timeframe. USA Legal Uproar as Trump Expands Mandatory Immigration Detention
webfact posted a topic in World News
Picture courtesy of KGET The Trump administration has rolled out new guidance barring immigrants, who entered the United States without legal authorisation, from bond hearings. As a result, countless individuals may now face lengthy detention while contesting deportation in court, a process that can drag on for months or even years. A spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) explained that this guidance aims to "close a loophole" in immigration law, ensuring that all individuals entering unlawfully are treated uniformly while still receiving due process. The directive from ICE extends the detention policy beyond recent border arrivals to include those who have resided in the U.S. for years, even if they have American-born children and potential legal avenues to remain. Critics argue that this expands authorities’ discretion and risks prolonging detention periods unnecessarily. Vanessa Dojaquez-Torres, from the American Immigration Lawyers Association, highlighted the administration's growing focus on prolonged detention and deportation efforts. Without bond hearings, detainees are unable to prove to judges that they pose neither a flight risk nor a threat to public safety. The Department of Homeland Security, via a post on X, underscored President Trump's commitment to removing "criminals and lawbreakers" from the streets, referencing a $45 billion allocation for new detention facilities. This, they claim, will provide ample space for executing this policy. Rebekah Wolf from the American Immigration Council expressed concern about the lack of transparency over the legal basis for mandatory detention. Reports indicate divided responses among immigration judges, with some resisting the new rules and still granting bond hearings. ICE acting Director Todd M. Lyons acknowledged in a memo that the policy could face legal challenges. Despite some immigration judges contesting the guidance, ICE has reportedly appealed decisions that defy the new rules, keeping detainees in custody until appeals are settled. The unfolding situation illustrates a tense legal landscape, with implications for the thousands caught up in the U.S. immigration system under these tightened measures. USA Bondi Holds Firm: No Change on Epstein Files Despite Trump’s Nod
webfact posted a topic in World News
Jeffrey Epstein. File photo Attorney General Pam Bondi remains steadfast, refusing to release additional files on Jeffrey Epstein, despite comments from President Donald Trump suggesting otherwise. Bondi, at a press conference on Tuesday, affirmed that a recent memo adequately addressed the issue, nixing further disclosure for now. The President supported Bondi at the White House, acknowledging her handling of the Epstein case while endorsing calls for more transparency. Trump mentioned the importance of credibility and stated, “The attorney general has handled that very well,” aligning his stance with Bondi's current position. Bondi’s remarks came during a Drug Enforcement Agency event, spotlighting recent methamphetamine seizures, with a significant 64,000 pounds confiscated since January. Despite the emphasis on tackling drug crimes, media attention fixated on the Epstein controversy. Sources indicate that Bondi’s department is aiming to pivot focus onto other pressing issues like drug enforcement, potentially mitigating backlash among Trump’s supporters. The strategy involves positioning Bondi prominently in discussions unrelated to Epstein. At the event, Bondi sidestepped questions regarding her ties with FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino. Instead, she emphasised teamwork in achieving Trump administration goals, underlining her commitment to the role as long as Trump desires. In response to questions about Deputy Director Bongino, Trump expressed a positive opinion but did not explain the reported tensions with Bondi. The situation suggests internal dynamics may continue without public clarification. In summary, Bondi maintains her position on the Epstein files, while the administration seeks to redirect public discourse towards drug enforcement victories. Trump’s support remains consistent, reinforcing Bondi’s stance amid ongoing scrutiny. Adapted by ASEAN Now from CNN 2025-07-17- 64 replies

UK Kilted Aussie Charged After Attack on Scotland’s Stone of Destiny
webfact posted a topic in World News
File photo Aussie Arnaud Harixcalde Logan has been slapped with a "malicious mischief" charge for allegedly attacking the Stone of Destiny's display case in Perth Museum, Scotland. The 35-year-old, reportedly donning a kilt, caused chaos as he attempted to shatter the protective glass surrounding this ancient symbol of Scottish sovereignty. Logan, hailing from Sydney, faced Perth Sheriff Court but wasn't required to plead, leaving him detained pending a hearing next week. Cops rushed to the scene on Saturday following reports of the kilt-clad commotion at the museum in central Scotland. The Stone of Destiny, or Stone of Scone, weighing a hefty 150 kilograms, has a storied past. Once integral to the coronations at Scone Abbey, it was seized by King Edward I of England in the 13th century and positioned under the throne at Westminster Abbey. Since then, it has played a pivotal role in the crowning of both English and British monarchs. A group of Glasgow students famously stole the stone in 1950, but they returned it for Queen Elizabeth II's 1953 coronation. In 1996, marking a historic gesture, the stone made its return to Scotland and took residence at Edinburgh Castle, with the condition that it would travel back to London for future coronations. Under strict secrecy and security, it made its last journey for King Charles III's 2023 ceremony. Now part of Perth Museum’s collection, officials assure tight 24/7 security. However, the weekend’s events have spotlighted ongoing tensions and the stone's enduring national significance. Adapted by ASEAN Now from CNN 2025-07-17 -
video screenshot Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" supporters are up in arms over his latest plan to sell US-made weapons to Ukraine through NATO. The announcement has sparked backlash, with critics arguing that it contradicts Trump's vow to end US involvement in foreign wars. The White House, however, insists that European countries will fund the arms deal. Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and former Trump strategist Steve Bannon are among those voicing strong disapproval. Greene, a staunch Trump ally, argues that this move breaks his campaign promises to avoid foreign entanglements. Bannon, too, chimed in, labelling the conflict a "European war" and urging Europe to handle it independently. Despite Trump emphasising that the deal involves selling, not gifting, arms, Greene remains sceptical. She believes that indirect costs and training missions still burden US taxpayers. Greene's public criticism highlights a growing divide among Trump’s base, with some fearing escalation and unnecessary involvement. Meanwhile, White House officials express confidence in Trump’s strategy, asserting that most supporters still back military assistance to Ukraine. A recent poll suggests nearly two-thirds of Trump voters support the initiative. Trump's manoeuvre finds support in his administration, with defence leaders applauding NATO's increased defence commitments. The alliance's decision to heighten its economic contribution to defence is viewed positively as a shift towards balanced burden-sharing among allies. In a BBC interview, Trump reiterated NATO's self-sufficiency and expressed both dismay about and determination to address ongoing tensions with Russia. He expressed optimism about resolving the Ukraine conflict, while also acknowledging that there were missed opportunities in negotiations with Vladimir Putin. Despite internal disagreements, Trump's administration continues to defend the plan, aiming to balance commitments while reassuring key supporters. As the debate rages on, the effects on America's foreign policy stance remain a crucial focal point. Adapted by ASEAN Now from BBC 2025-07-17

video screenshot Fauja Singh, the world's oldest marathon runner, tragically passed away at the age of 114 following a hit-and-run incident in Punjab, India. The legendary athlete, renowned as the “Turbaned Tornado,” began his marathon journey in his late 80s, defying age stereotypes. Fauja Singh was born in rural India in 1911 and later moved to London, where he embraced marathon running after the loss of his wife and son. Despite starting at 89, Singh successfully completed nine marathons and captured worldwide attention for his determination and resilience. Among his achievements, he became the first centenarian to complete a marathon, finishing the Toronto event in eight hours, 11 minutes. The incident occurred near Singh's native village of Beas, and police officers are working tirelessly to trace the responsible vehicle. Authorities, including Jalandhar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police Harvinder Singh Virk, are utilising CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts in their investigation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led tributes from around the globe, praising Singh's exceptional athletic abilities and indomitable spirit. Singh’s journey began when he took up running at 89, discovering a passion that brought him solace and renewed purpose. Despite his remarkable achievements, Singh was unable to secure a Guinness World Record because he did not have a birth certificate. Yet, his legacy was marked by admiration and recognition, including a personal letter from Queen Elizabeth on his 100th birthday. During his lifetime, Singh viewed running as more than just a sport; it served as a means of healing from personal loss. He found freedom on the track, which he expressed fondly, even at 102. The running community and admirers worldwide mourn the loss of this extraordinary figure, who showed that age was no barrier to achieving greatness. His passion and perseverance continue to inspire future generations as investigation efforts proceed. Adapted by ASEAN Now from CNN 2025-07-17

Picture courtesy of AP via CNN An American man, 46, faces murder charges in Rome after extradition from Greece, accused of killing a woman and her baby. The suspect, Francis Kaufmann, from California, was brought to Italy following his arrest in Skiathos, Greece. He allegedly used false identities, including the name Rexal Ford, to evade authorities. Kaufmann's initial court appearance at Rome’s Rebibbia prison saw him exercise his right to silence, refusing to answer questions posed by investigating judge Flavia Costantini and prosecutor Giuseppe Cascini. The victims, Anastasia Trofimova and her 11-month-old daughter, were found at Villa Pamphili Park. The police report details the tragic starvation and strangulation of the baby, while Trofimova's cause of death remains undetermined. Identified through her distinctive tattoos by images broadcast on an Italian TV show, the connection was made by her mother in Moscow. Interviewed later, Trofimova’s mother revealed her daughter’s relationship with Kaufmann, known to her as Rexal Ford, began in Malta. Living transiently in Rome, the family reportedly relied on soup kitchens despite Kaufmann having access to credit cards and courting investors lavishly. Captured and extradited, Kaufmann denies the accusations. With DNA evidence implicating him in Trofimova’s murder, further tests will determine paternal links to the baby. His alias was reportedly used in film location scouting, adding layers to his complex persona. Kaufmann’s chilling case highlights his double life as he faces a judicial process that could uncover more about his mysterious past. The focus now rests on the DNA results and the unfolding legal proceedings in Italy. Adapted by ASEAN Now from CNN 2025-07-17

Picture courtesy of THe Nation Thai farmers are up in arms as trade talks with the United States hit a boiling point, fearing devastating effects on local agriculture and national food security due to US demands. Today, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira confirmed that negotiations have stalled, with the US urging Thailand to lower tariffs on meat imports. The proposed high tariff of 36% on Thai exports starting August 1 looms unless Thailand complies. Thailand has offered tariff cuts on 90% of US products but insists certain demands are excessive. Sittiphan Thanakiatpinyo, President of the Swine Raiser Association, expressed grave concerns, fearing over 100,000 pig farmers could lose their livelihoods. Describing the situation, Sittiphan criticised allowing cheap US pork imports, highlighting risks tied to subsidised American pork, which uses banned substances harmful to health. The potential spread of diseases like swine flu, not previously recorded in Thailand, adds to the alarm. Echoing these sentiments, Dr Wiwat Pongwiwatchai of the Beef Cattle Association emphasised the challenges already faced under free trade with other countries. He warned against US beef imports, which involve banned hormones, further endangering local producers. However, some see a silver lining. Somphop Eausongtham of the Thai Feed Mill Association noted potential gains for animal feed manufacturers through cheaper raw material imports, boosting production and exports. Despite potential benefits in other sectors, the government remains firm in prioritising food security and protecting Thai farmers. Pichai assured the public that negotiations would continue without compromising health or livelihoods, according to The Nation. With the deadline fast approaching, the stakes are high, leaving the future of Thailand's agricultural sector on tenterhooks. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Thaiger 2025-07-17

Picture courtesy of MGR online Transforming Travel: Bangkok to Nong Khai in Record Time BANGKOK - The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is gearing up to open bidding for the cutting-edge Bangkok to Nong Khai high-speed railway in 2026. This ambitious project promises to revolutionise regional connectivity by reducing travel times and boosting economic growth. SRT chief, Veerath Amrapal, unveiled the plans during a public consultation, highlighting the strategic significance of this Thai-Chinese collaboration. Veerath emphasised the importance of gathering diverse perspectives to ensure the project meets both public and business needs. By leveraging the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the initiative aims to modernise Thailand’s infrastructure, engaging private entities in system installation, management, and maintenance. Participation from both local and international firms is encouraged, with Chinese investors showing keen interest. As part of the roadmap, a private sector consultation is slated for October 2025. The feedback will inform the investment plan and subsequent presentations to the Ministry of Transport by year-end. The Cabinet is expected to review and approve the proposal in early 2026, paving the way for bidding mid-year and an operational launch aimed for 2029. The project is making good progress, with the first phase's civil works from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima currently 45.65% complete. The government plans to procure four train sets equipped with Fuxing Hao CR300AF technology from China. Whoever secures the PPP contract will manage this phase, while the government will oversee the initial installations. Phase two, stretching to Nong Khai, has completed design and environmental assessments, with Cabinet approval secured. Valued at 340 billion baht (approximately 13 billion USD), preparations for the civil contracts are underway. Completion of this phase is anticipated by 2031, propelling Thailand’s rail capabilities to a new level. Once finished, this high-speed railway will cut travel between Bangkok and Nong Khai to roughly three and a half hours. This advancement not only marks a significant progress in Thailand's transport infrastructure but also establishes the country as a leader in high-speed rail excellence. Thailand's Digital Baht Plan Targets Big-Spending Tourists Picture courtesy of Business World Thailand is seizing the crypto trend by letting tourists spend their digital coins directly on everything from pad Thai to plush resorts. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1366928-thailands-digital-baht-plan-targets-big-spending-tourists/ -
Picture courtesy of Business World Thailand is seizing the crypto trend by letting tourists spend their digital coins directly on everything from pad Thai to plush resorts. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Bank of Thailand (BoT) are introducing a crypto sandbox programme to enhance tourism and pump fresh cash into the local economy. On July 15, Anek Yuyuen, SEC's Deputy Secretary General, revealed that this initiative will enable visitors to transform their digital assets into Thai baht for smooth spending. “This project will help support economic recovery and strengthen our tourism sector,” Yuyuen stated. Tourists will create accounts with licensed digital operators under strict regulation from the SEC, transacting through e-money providers monitored by the BoT. Adherence to stringent anti-money laundering checks via Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols is mandatory for all. With a monthly spending cap of 50,000 baht on the Thai QR Code system, visitors can easily pay small merchants. Merchants who undergo additional verification can accept payments up to 500,000 baht per month. This sandbox initiative is a strategic move to position Thailand as a prime destination for digital asset enthusiasts. Holding the highest cryptocurrency ownership in Asia, Thailand ranks fifth globally. Recent data highlights the potential benefits: In 2024, Thailand welcomed 35.54 million tourists, generating 1.67 trillion baht. Despite recovery, these numbers are shy of the 1.91 trillion baht from 2019. Officials believe streamlined crypto spending could bridge this gap, according to The Nation. “This initiative is expected to enhance Thailand’s appeal for digital-savvy tourists,” Yuyuen explained, adding that public consultation will run until August 13. Merkle Capital's Investment Advisor, Woramet Chanseng, praised the sandbox as a step toward establishing Thailand as a digital asset hub. “The experiment opens the door for fresh capital inflows, increasing baht demand,” he commented. “It might also pave the way for a future digital baht.” Nevertheless, Woramet cautioned that hurdles such as complex verification processes for travellers and merchants persist. Should the sandbox succeed, officials anticipate Thailand will emerge as a major player in the global digital economy. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Thaiger 2025-07-17
