  2. In a last-minute attempt to delay the reading of the Supreme Court’s verdict, scheduled on Monday, former director-general of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), Tarit Pengdit, submitted a petition Friday, through the Supreme Court to the Constitutional Court, seeking a ruling on the constitutionality of Sections 157 and 200 of the Criminal Code. Citing Section 212 of the Constitution, Tarit claimed that the court must forward his petition to the Charter Court for consideration, as he warned that, if the Supreme Court upholds the Appeals Court’s guilty verdict, it will effectively “whitewash” the 2010 bloody crackdown against red-shirt protesters, ordered by former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and former deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban. Tarit spoke at length about the case against Abhisit and Suthep at a meeting today with relatives of 99 red-shirt protesters killed and relatives of about 2,000 protesters injured during the crackdown. 5. Pita Sees Non-Coalition MPs, Senators Being Swayed By Voters’ Consensus By Thai Newsroom Reporters MOVE FORWARD LEADER/PRIME minister-designate Pita Limjaroenrat said today (July 8th) certain non-coalition MPs and some senators might probably pick him for head of government not because of him as an individual politician or anything about his progressive party as a whole but because they may only mean to observe the voters’ consensus. 6. Photo: Thai Rath MOVE FORWARD LEADER/PRIME minister-designate Pita Limjaroenrat said today (July 8th) certain non-coalition MPs and some senators might probably pick him for head of government not because of him as an individual politician or anything about his progressive party as a whole but because they may only mean to observe the voters’ consensus. Pita said those non-coalition MPs and senators who might probably vote for him to take the helm of government might as well resolve to pay an ultimate respect for the principles of democratic rule under which a consensus of a majority of voters in last May’s general election be seriously taken into account. Pita said those lawmakers who might jump onto the bandwagon of a majority of MPs to pick him for prime minister during the upcoming Thursday’s joint House/Senate meeting would probably mean to put such democratic principles above unresolved concerns over himself as leader of the Move Forward or any of their political ideologies manifested during nationwide electoral campaigns. This initiative marks a concentrated effort towards environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. Spearheaded by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and the Rowing Association of Thailand, the project saw its launch at the Nai Harn public park in Rawai. The event was strategically selected based on a national rowing event scheduled to take place there for five days. This reforestation venture supports EGAT’s overarching ambition of reviving local ecosystems through the creation of green spaces. This is in line with EGAT’s commitment to maintaining a carbon-neutral stance by 2050. The ceremonial proceedings were graced by the attendance of Phuket’s Vice Governor, Anupap Rodkwan Yodrambam, alongside other figures like Admiral Chainarong Charoenrak, the President of the Rowing Association of Thailand, Rawai’s Mayor Aroon Solos, and Somsak Prangthong, EGAT’s Director of Social Affairs. 21. A Kiwi national who thought he was going to die after being imprisoned last year for the possession of drugs can finally breathe a sigh of relief after being released from his Thai hellhole. Ari Michael Salinger, son of prominent New Zealand climate change expert Dr Jim Salinger, was arrested in Patong in September last year for the possession of two ecstasy tablets. The 45 year old, initially released on bail, expected to pay a small fine and then be sent on his way. Instead, the New Zealand national was incarcerated for several months in what he described as a hellhole, his worst nightmare. Salinger was cuffed, starved and forced to sleep naked on prison floors in Patong, Phuket, and Bangkok prisons. He said, it was worse than any movie depiction and, he thought he was going to die. “I thought I would be killed.” Ari Michael Salinger. Picture courtesy of Alex Burton Pre-Covid-19 Salinger moved to Thailand from the Philippines because he believed his cryptocurrency business would thrive in the Land of Smiles, reported the New Zealand Herald. “The business was great when I came here, I made a lot of money and then Covid hit. I was unable to go back to the Philippines to my partner Vanessa and our son.” The Kiwi’s cryptocurrency business tanked during Covid and, as if things couldn’t get any worse, suspicious Patong Police picked up and arrested Salinger as he was leaving his Patong hotel for drug possession. He was carrying two ecstasy pills he now claims weren’t his, even though he initially pleaded guilty to the charges. Salinger claims he was humiliated by Patong Police Station officers. “In the interview room, they tightened my handcuffs and refused to even let me use the toilet. I have irritable bowel syndrome and they did not care. I told them I’ll have to relieve myself here if they won’t let me use the toilet. “So, six officers took me to the toilet. I requested to have my handcuffs loosened so I could pull my pants up but they wouldn’t let me. I asked for one of them to help me pull them up but they did not offer any help. “They made me walk half naked with my pants down all the way through the public corridors, they pushed me, made me fall over, they were all laughing and taking a video recording. It was very humiliating.” by Bob Scott Top Picture courtesy of New Zealand Herald. #news Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/kiwis-prison-plight-ends-thai-hellhole-release-brings-a-breath-of-relief -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-07-10 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
