  1. The accident on an escalator at Don Mueang airport yesterday (Thursday) might have been caused by a small object falling into the end of the escalator, causing a gap in the floor panel that trapped the leg of a passenger before it stopped automatically 20 seconds later, said Boonpong Kitwattanachai, an advisor to the mechanical engineering committee of the Thai Engineering Institute of Thailand. He said that a floor panel was found to have fallen under the escalator, indicating that the bolt which attaches the floor to the escalating rail had failed. He also said that Don Mueang airport had hired the company which supplied the escalator to maintain it and it is checked by the company’s mechanics every day before it is opened for service. As such, it is unlikely that poor maintenance was the cause of the accident, claimed Boonpong. He also dismissed the suggestion that the escalator is too old, after having been in service at the airport for about 30 years, noting that the normal life span of an escalator is 45 years. For the sake of safety while riding on the escalator, Boonpong suggested passengers to keep one hand on the handrail and avoid using their cell phone. #news Source: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/don-mueang-airports-escalator-accident-not-caused-by-poor-maintenance/ -- © Copyright Thai PBS 2023-07-01 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 3. MOVE FORWARD LEADER PITA Limjaroenrat said today (June 30) more and more senators may already have decided to vote him for prime minister. Pita was responding to speculation that many of the unelected senators will either abstain from voting or cast yea votes for any other candidate for prime minister in lieu of him despite the fact that the Move Forward has become the largest elected party. The Move Forward leader has earlier pointed out that many senators may have doubts about the progressive party’s campaign-promised policy to amend the draconian lese majeste law, better known as Section 112, among others, and that he and his partisan colleagues have been giving them explanations and reaching mutual understanding about it. 4. Prawit Tipped As Pita’s Rival For PM By Thai Newsroom Reporters Palang Pracharth leader Prawit Wongsuwan. 5. PALANG PRACHARATH LEADER PRAWIT Wongsuwan will likely be named prime minister in rivalry against Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat, partisan sources said Friday (June 30). Prawit, the leader of the fourth largest elected party, will likely compete in a sustained effort to rise to power though he may have only 188 MPs on his side, compared to 312 in support of Pita, the leader of the No.1 largest party, as long as senators could potentially play a decisive role toward either side’s victory, the sources said. The military-designed constitution requires a partisan candidate for head of government to secure votes of support from more than half the combined total of MPs and senators or at least 376 votes. All 250 senators were handpicked by the Palang Pracharath leader and de facto Ruam Thai Sang Chart boss Prayut Chan-o-cha following the 2014 coup. 10. Ten days prior to the incident involving a woman losing half of her leg at Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok, a young boy experienced an escalator mishap that resulted in his foot getting trapped underneath. Fortunately, the boy made a successful recovery after receiving 11 stitches. A Thai woman on Wednesday lost her leg after she collapsed on the escalator at Don Mueang Airport. The doctor told the victim and the media that her leg could be reattached. Despite this positive development, the woman remains in a state of shock. She reportedly cried when seeing her news go viral on social media. Following the woman’s unfortunate fall, a number of Thai netizens and news outlets reported similar cases from the past in order to raise awareness and caution the public about the potential dangers associated with escalators. The Facebook post of a Thai man who fell victim to the escalator in 2019 went viral on Thai social media once more following the woman’s story. by Petch Petpailin #news Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/another-injured-victim-steps-forward-following-escalator-accident-at-bangkok-airport -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-06-30 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Foreign nationals in Phuket donate blood amid Rh-negative shortage By Mitch Connor In an uplifting gesture of community unity, the Immigration Department of Phuket extended heartfelt appreciation to the 121 foreign nationals who donated blood at a special drive held at the Central Floresta shopping complex today. 12. In an uplifting gesture of community unity, the Immigration Department of Phuket extended heartfelt appreciation to the 121 foreign nationals who donated blood at a special drive held at the Central Floresta shopping complex today. This blood donation event was jointly orchestrated by the Phuket Immigration Department and the local chapter of the Red Cross Society. The primary motivation behind the drive was to replenish the rapidly diminishing blood supplies in the region. The depletion in supply, particularly of Rh-negative blood, has been attributed to the escalating incidences of road accidents involving foreign nationals, leading to their admission in hospitals and consequentially straining the Rh-negative blood resources. Among those who stepped forward to contribute to the noble cause included expatriates, learners enrolled in language schools, Muay Thai trainees, tourists who became aware of the drive, and members of the Phuket Immigration Volunteers Group. A special mention was offered to professional pianist Ivan Sharapov for his generosity towards the needy. Sharapov is a highly regarded figure among the local officials of Phuket Immigration and the Russian community present in Phuket. 13. Pheu Thai’s leverage may be getting stronger By Tulsathit Taptim Amid post-election shocks and Move Forward’s euphoria, the Pheu Thai Party looked all but dead and buried immediately after the May 14 election. 14. Amid post-election shocks and Move Forward’s euphoria, the Pheu Thai Party looked all but dead and buried immediately after the May 14 election. It was a peculiar political mishap, though, because Pheu Thai still won 141 seats and as of now will still be able to be the second biggest party in a Pita government if it chooses to. The difference now is that playing the second fiddle to Move Forward is no longer Pheu Thai’s only option. Much has to do with the parliamentary numbers generated by the May election. A lot has to do with Pheu Thai starting to realise that. The rest has to do with Move Forward itself. Things have changed significantly after about one month and a half. Days after the election, Pheu Thai was under immense pressure to support Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat because all of the democratic logic demanded so. Take away Thaksin Shinawatra, who has been softly criticised by Move Forward, the two parties share virtually the same thinking, albeit with different levels of seriousness, aggression and extremism. There was no reason or justification why Pheu Thai should not back Pita. Now, what Move Forward has done since May 14 comes in. A victory parade has been followed by comments, activities or announcements that irritate or upset the conservatives. A viral clip of a female political leader deeply associated with Move Forward pretending to call a late Khana Ratsadon hero saying “We are making it” is not helping Move Forward’s difficult path. He and his team promptly arrived at the location, armed with snake-capturing equipment, ready to deal with the perilous situation. On finding the snake hiding beside a wardrobe, they carefully captured it and placed it in a sack for safe release back into the wild. 18. UPDATE: Checks ordered on moving walkways after shocking incident at Don Mueang By Peter Roche PHOTO: Spring News Safety checks are to be carried out on all moving walkways at Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport, after a woman lost part of her leg yesterday morning at 8.40am, June 29. The Bangkok Post reports that the female passenger was using the walkway in the airport’s domestic terminal when she apparently tripped over her suitcase as it came to the end of the 27 year old travellator. It’s believed the force of the fall opened the walkway’s yellow safety cover and the woman was pulled into its internal mechanism. Following the incident, Airports of Thailand has ordered inspections on all travellators at Don Mueang. According to AoT president, Kerati Kijmanawat, the incident took place at around 8.40am yesterday. The female passenger was due to board a flight to the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, when she fell between Gates 4 and 5. 20. Thailand’s caretaker PM has called for the formation of a new government to be peaceful and prompt. Asked if he’ll try for another term as PM if he gets the backing of MPs and senators, Prayut Chan-o-cha insists he will not. “No. Not at all.” The PM was responding to questions at a press conference held at Government House yesterday, June 29, according to a Nation Thailand report. Prayut says he will continue in his prime ministerial capacity until there is a new Cabinet in place, adding that he can’t say how long that will take. “I’ve repeatedly said I must be acting PM until the new Cabinet is sworn in. It could be a month more. They have their schedule. If everything is postponed, I’ll remain acting PM. 24. Police swooped to rescue two children held captive and abused by their mother in a dramatic fake kidnapping scenario. The truth later emerged that the woman had huge debts and concocted the scene to extort money from her ex-husband. On June 28, a Thai man named Mayakee reached out to the public and police for help on social media after sharing two videos of his children being abused by their mother. In the video, the man’s five year old son was forced to drink bathroom cleaning liquid while his 12 year old daughter was beaten up. Mayakee reported the issue to officers at Kotabaru Police Station, revealing to the media that he had four children and divorced his wife a year ago. He and his ex-wife signed a legal document agreeing that he would be the main guardian for the children and that the children would stay with him. Mayakee explained that he allowed the children to spend some time with their mother on some occasions. However, during their last visit, three of them mysteriously vanished. He did not hear from his children for five days until he received two distressing videos sent by one of his daughters. by Petch Petpailin Top Photo via ThaiRath #news Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/mother-behind-fake-kidnapping-police-swoop-to-rescue-captive-kids
