  1. Freak escalator accident sees 57-year-old female passenger’s leg severed at Don Mueang Airport by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor On Thursday afternoon, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha expressed deep concern and ordered an urgent report on a shocking incident at Don Mueang Airport. It occurred at 8.27 am and saw the left leg of a 57-year-old Terminal Two passenger travelling to Nakhon Si Thammarat province engorged by a faulty walkway escalator, causing it to be severed at the knee and prompting an emergency response at Thailand’s second busiest airport. Thailand’s second busiest airport was the kingdom’s main airport until 2006. Thursday’s freak accident followed another freak event with an escalator in 2019 when a visitor to the airport lost a rubber shoe to a malfunctioning moving stair. Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha has ordered an urgent report into exactly what happened and expressed his deep concern. The Thai PM and top officials on Thursday reacted quickly after a nightmarish incident unfolded at the country’s second busiest airport when a 57-year-old woman had her leg cut off below the knee by a walkway escalator at 8.27 am in the morning as she made her way towards a domestic flight heading for Nakhon Si Thammarat province. Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha has asked for an immediate report on a shocking incident on Thursday morning at Don Mueang International Airport in which a 57-year-old female passenger lost her left leg from the knee down while using a moving walkway at Terminal 2 in the airport. 6. A Thai man tragically died after cutting off his penis with a grass strimmer at a forest park in the Isaan province of Nong Bua Lamphu. The strimmer blade snapped and accidentally sliced his penis and groin area causing a severe loss of blood. Officers from Mueang Nong Bua Lamphu Police Station dashed to the forest park yesterday, June 28, and discovered the lifeless body of 39 year old Praditsin Chuypad. Praditsin’s pants and legs were soaked in blood. Nearby the body a strimmer was located next to a broken metal cutting blade. The rescue team then removed Praditsin’s pants to assess the cause of his demise. Praditsin’s genitals were reported to be cut. A deep wound was also discovered in his left groin. The severity of the injury had affected his arteries, leading to significant blood loss and his death. The police later discovered a part of the breaking blade which was covered with blood. They predicted that the blade was broken after it directly hit Praditsin. 8. A member of Thailand’s hand-picked Senate has predicted that the leader of the Move Forward Party “won’t even get 5 votes” from the 250 senators to back his bid for PM. Pita Limjaroenrat hopes to become Thailand’s next leader when the new PM is chosen, expected to happen on July 13. Thailand’s current Senators were hand-picked by the 2014 coup leader and the NCPO after the 2017 Thai constitution was enacted. They have universally supported Thailand’s political status-quo and were installed, specifically, to keep conservative elements in charge of the Thai parliament. Senator Kittisak Rattanawaraha has dismissed Pita’s chances of being elected. According to him, most senators have “already decided they’ll either vote against Pita or abstain”. Kittisak also says Pita might not be the only contender, as any party that has won 25 or more House seats can put forward up to 3 candidates. 10. Thailand and the United Kingdom (UK)are looking to fortify their economic ties now the toxic dust of Brexit has settled. With the next Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) meeting on the horizon this November, it’s believed that both countries are ready to elevate their relationship to a potential strategic economic partnership. JETCO Director-General Auramon Supthaweethum spoke at length about the expected sectors that are set to benefit from this economic bolstering. These sectors range from food and drink, health, education, the automotive industry, agriculture, and the digital sector. The subsequent aim of these actions is to form a foothold for future negotiations of free trade between the two nations. The economic relationship between Thailand and the UK has flourished since the UK severed ties with the European Union in 2021. It was within that same year that the two countries put pen to paper and agreed on a Memorandum of Understanding. The mission is to establish JETCO. The goal of this endeavour was the amplification and enhancement of economic cooperation in trade and investment, focussing particularly on sectors that spark mutual interest, reported Bangkok Post. The first ministerial JETCO meeting was hosted in June of the previous year. Among the attendance were Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit and the UK’s Minister of State for Trade Policy, Penny Mordaunt. Within this first meeting, a 1-2 year work plan was approved to facilitate trade expansion and reduce trade barriers within the aforementioned mutually interesting sectors. 14. An 82 year old resident monk at a temple in Thailand’s Buriram was reportedly duped by a conman impersonating a monk, leading to the theft of 180,000 baht (US$5,051) from the temple. Villagers from Butapuang, Mueang district yesterday called for the police to track down the culprit. Yesterday at around 1pm, the imposter paid a visit to the temple where the resident monk resides. The imposter, a man around 50 years old with a missing tooth and dark complexion, began the conversation by enquiring about security cameras in the area. To that question, the resident monk responded negatively. The fake monk then claimed that the air conditioner in the living quarters was defective, thus diverting the monk’s attention. He then asked for a white envelope, claiming he was going to make a donation to the temple. When the resident monk discovered that 180,000 baht was missing, he immediately alerted the rest of the temple monks. It was believed that the theft was committed by the imposter, reported KhaoSod. A 47 year old novice monk, a witness to the entire event, revealed that the imposter stayed in the temple until 4pm before leaving in a saloon car. by Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of Dailynews - เดลินิวส์ออนไลน์ Facebook. 22. In a close-knit community in Pattaya, an 11 year old boy was critically injured as an old wall collapsed on him. As locals looked on in worried anticipation, emergency services promptly administered first aid and transferred the injured kid to a nearby hospital. Upon reaching the scene of the incident — an unassuming one-storey dwelling in Nong Prue sub-district, Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri province — rescue teams discovered the distressed boy covered in blood, crying out in pain. It was soon apparent that the boy, a fifth-grade student of a local school under the pseudonym of ‘A,’ had a severe leg injury due to being trapped under a collapsed brick wall, reported KhaoSod. An eyewitness account from the local snack vendor, 62 year old Thong, provided some background to the unfortunate occurrence. He relayed that A had stopped to buy some fried meatballs, yet, visibly perturbed by a barking dog, the boy climbed up on an adjoining wall to hide. The vendor had warned the boy against sitting on the old, brittle boundary that happened to be taller than the hallowed spirit house. Disregarding the advice, the boy sat on the wall as Thong prepared his order. As the vendor was finishing the order, the weak wall unexpectedly collapsed over the boy, leaving him grievously injured. 24. Craft brewers and distillers call for easing of production curbs BANGKOK -- It took only a word from Thailand's prime minister hopeful to trigger a run on local liquor brands Sangvein Spirits and Issan Rum. Appearing on a morning TV show in early June, Pita Limjaroenrat named his favorite spirits and reminded audiences of his Move Forward Party's policy to promote Thai liquors abroad. But as supporters -- who carried the party to a surprise win in the May 14 general election -- rushed to order bottles, they were confronted by the supply issue at the heart of Move Forward's policy. Small distilleries are limited to five-horsepower stills, which means they can make only 100 bottles per day. "We're actually almost sold out this year. It's going to be rough for us to try to keep up with demand," said Niks Anumanrajadhon, a partner in Issan Rum.
