Thailand is hosting this year’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit next week at the newly rebuilt Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre (QSNCC). The venue closed in April 2019 for a 15-billion-baht renovation before reopening in September — just in time for APEC 2022, when leaders of 21 member economies will convene for their annual meeting on November 18-19. This will be the first time that APEC leaders have attended a meeting in person since the COVID-19 pandemic, when their summits were held online. The QSNCC has already hosted many national and international events since reopening on September 12, including Book Expo Thailand 2022, Huawei Connect 2022, Electric Vehicle Asia 2022, ASEAN Sustainable Energy Week 2022, and Thailand Game Show 2022. Reservations have been made for 130 exhibitions next year, on top of the 50 booked for this year, according to NCC Management and Development Co Ltd, which operates the conference center. It is almost one year to the day since PayPal first announced that it was relaunching its services in Thailand. The relaunch was necessary in order for the company to comply with new regulations in Thailand after the government overhauled regulation of the country’s fintech sector. In order to comply with the regulations, only those with a registered business account would be able to use PayPal to send and receive money and pay for goods and services online. The Royal Thai Police (RTP) are in the process of revising the entire management of service pistols and the welfare gun program, under which police officers can buy their own guns at lower than market prices, says Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol, the deputy national police chief. During an exclusive interview with Thai PBS he also said that the RTP will coordinate with the Ministry of Interior over tighter controls on the issuance of gun purchase permits, known as the Por 3 document, and licenses to own guns, known as the Por 4 document. The current efforts to streamline gun controls in Thailand follow the mass shooting and knife attacks at a child care centre in the north-eastern province of Nong Bua Lamphu on October 6th, committed by a former, now deceased police officer, in which 36 people died, mostly young children. There was also the theft of more than 150 service weapons, including several assault rifles, from a police station in Nonthaburi province, allegedly by a police officer, as well as widespread corruption in the gun welfare program.
