Opinion Thailand’s limelight at APEC is being rocked by events outside its control By Ken Mathis Lohatepanont That chairing Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting is something that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha looks forward to, as it may be his final triumph after 8 long years in office but the road leading to this triumphant event is not looking smoot. Opinion By Ken Mathis Lohatepanont That chairing Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting is something that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha looks forward to, as it may be his final triumph after 8 long years in office but the road leading to this triumphant event is not looking smooth. The crowing moment for his career would be when the leaders of some of the world’s leading economies, who had initially shunned him after the 2014 putsch against the Yingluck Shinawatra government, surround the coup leader as part of the ritual for the photo op. On the bright side for Prayut, Chinese president Xi Jinping will be there, in his first visit to Thailand as president likely just after securing a norm-breaking third term. Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, will also attend as the personal guest of the prime minister; the same goes for Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman, fresh off the recent defrosting of Saudi-Thai relations. By Tanakorn Panyadee Pattaya — Pattaya deputy mayor Manote Nongyai inspected the fire scene on Soi Buakhao 15 after communication wires caught fire on October 19th, saying the completion of the drainage system construction project has been delayed to at least the next Songkran Day in April 2023. The Chief Financial Officer of Thai Airways, Chai Eamsiri, submitted information to the Central Bankruptcy Court in September by James Morris and Son Nguyen It appears that the airline, kept alive by cargo freight income and the protection of the court through the pandemic emergency, has made substantial progress in trimming its previously huge cost base while capturing market share as the country reopened with other international airlines, for now, scrambling after richer pickings while others are not able to compete on routes to Bangkok as before. However, Bangkok Bank, a key dissenting creditor in a submission to the Central Bankruptcy Court has expressed its doubts about the firm’s high-flying plans to find further credit which includes an expressed intention to relaunch itself on the stock market by 2025. As part of its revised business plan approved by the Central Bankruptcy Court in Bangkok on Thursday, Thai Airways will finally begin refunding ticket purchases made by customers before it filed for bankruptcy in May 2022. Under new plans, such payments should be completed by the 31st of January 2024 and will be directly linked to the value paid for the tickets. The airline which has had its operating performance boosted since the reopening of Thailand earlier this year is projected to fly 4.4 million passengers in 2022 with an average flight load of about 80%. By Erich Parpart Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan insisted that the 22 luxury watches that he did not claim as assets were borrowed from his close but since deceased friend despite a claim from the executor of the will that the deceased friend did not have any luxury watches on his list of inheritance. “How would he know?” General Prawit replied to reporters while referring to Former Deputy Prime Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula, who is the executor of the will of the Prawit’s deceased friend, Pattawat Suksriwong. “The watches are Pattawat’s heritage, but they were not on the inheritance list because there were no important documents for them,” Gen.
