Will new XBB strain cause COVID to resurge in Thailand? The rapid spread of COVID-19’s latest subvariant – XBB – is grabbing attention worldwide, including in Thailand. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1274976-will-new-xbb-strain-cause-covid-to-resurge-in-thailand/ -
The rapid spread of COVID-19’s latest subvariant – XBB – is grabbing attention worldwide, including in Thailand. Three weeks after it was first detected in Singapore, XBB now accounts for at least half of the island state’s new cases. Thailand decided to step up its monitoring for the subvariant not only because Singapore is a neighbor but also because three XBB cases recently detected in Hong Kong had flown in from Thailand. Under focus The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed XBB as an Omicron subvariant under monitoring, indicating it may pose a new threat to global public health. First detected in August, the new subvariant is a recombinant of Omicron’s BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75 sub-lineages or BJ1 and BM.1.1.1. So far, XBB infections have been found in more than 17 countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Denmark, India, Japan and the United States. While there is no evidence that XBB causes more severe symptoms than previous versions of the virus, some experts suggest it may be more transmissible than other strains. "Let's all work together so the people love and have faith in their police". Thailand's national police chief spoke to his men Sunday in an address to mark the auspicious occasion of National Police Day. Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat's one year tenure - because he'll be 60 next year - began on October 1st. Within a week a former drug taking cop had massacred dozens of people in the north east. There have also been many cases of corruption embarrassing the RTP. Now Damrongsak used his address to bolster good feelings in the ranks in an attempt to restore public confidence, notes ASEAN NOW. He called on the force to work together so that the public would have love for and faith in their police. Principally he said that individual policemen and women should develop themselves personally. The should be professional in their work. Be proactive in their service. For the good of the public. Thai Rath reported Damrongsak's earnest good wishes for all in the force on a day to recognise their "solemn responsibilities and duties". He thanked his subordinates saying they should be "proud of their sacrifices for the Thai people". Putting the rhetoric aside many in Thailand regard the police with suspicion with some critics viewing them as the country's largest mafia. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-10-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
