Matthew Dupre, 36, began an extradition hearing Tuesday in Edmonton Court of King’s Bench — an early step which could end with his surrender to Thai authorities for trial in the murder of Jimi Singh Sandhu. According to a brief filed by Canada’s Attorney General on behalf of the Kingdom of Thailand, Thai authorities believe Dupre and another Canadian, Gene Karl Lahrkamp, gunned down Sandhu on the island of Phuket Feb. 4, 2022. Sandhu, a member of the United Nations gang, was shot more than 10 times outside his villa at Phuket’s Beachfront Hotel. Thai police found large sums of money and illegal drugs during a search of the villa, “leading investigators to believe that the murder related to an illegal drug trade rivalry,” the government brief states. Earth Agenda Foundation together with Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Veterinary Science, the Department of Marine and Costal Resources and SCG use 3D printing to create an artificial coral reef structure. Following its placement on the sea floor of the Gulf of Thailand in 2020, a variety of marine species have been seen on this complex, stable and durable underwater house. A broken piece of coral can grow on the 3D printed artificial coral reef over a period of time. (Photo courtesy of Earth Agenda Foundation) The brightly colored coral reefs teeming with marine life are far more than just a magnificent sight. The natural undersea attractions that beckon snorkelers and divers also create recreational and job opportunities, generating income for local communities and businesses. More importantly, coral reefs provide a habitat for a diversity of marine creatures and buffer the shores from waves that may flood coastal communities, thus helping prevent loss of life and property. In spite of their importance, coral reefs in the Thai seas and the world’s oceans are facing a plethora of threats including overfishing, physical damage from coastal development, pollution, removal for sale, and unsustainable tourism. Warming waters caused by climate change are causing coral bleaching. These threats have affected and continue to affect the health of the oceans and the ecosystems that support ocean life. A 2018 survey on the status of coral reefs in Thailand by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) showed that about 37% are damaged or severely damaged, 31.6% are in fairly healthy condition and the rest (31.4%) are in good or very good condition. Russian mafia gang extort young Russian couple out of $50k at a local coffee shop on Ko Samui by James Morris and Son Nguyen Ko Samui police interview Mr Evgenii Abdullin and his 31-year-old wife Ekaterina Abdullin at their favourite coffee shop in the Taling-ngam area of Ko Samui on Tuesday after Mr Evgenii filed a complaint concerning an incident there on the 15th September last when he was forced to pay over $50,000 in cryptocurrency funds to a gang of six men -who police are now investigating and are believed to be linked to the Russian mafia according to officers in Ko Samui and Surat Thani. Mysterious exploits of a six-member gang including Russians, Kazakh nationals and a German have been tracked by police since Monday when the disturbing case was reported to Ko Samui Police Station. The gang is believed to have spent some time in Pattaya in Chonburi province before travelling to Ko Samui where they stayed in a hotel before and after confronting the Russian couple at a local café on the popular holiday island. Police on Ko Samui are investigating the activities of a gang linked with the Russian mafia who extorted $50,000 from a young Russian couple on the island on Thursday, September 15th last while pursuing them after a menacing demand that $3 million be paid over to them in cryptocurrency funds. It is not quite clear what the basis for the ultimatum was or if any members of the gang are still in Thailand with at least two having left the country between September 17th and 20th last. A Russian couple was threatened and had money extorted from their cryptocurrency accounts on September 15th last on Ko Samui before reporting the case to the local police on Monday after a six-member gang began following them and intimidating them seeking to have further funds transferred to them using Bybit, a Singapore based cryptocurrency exchange.
