The National Innovation Agency (NIA) in Thailand is pushing for Bangkok to become the “food-tech silicon valley.” The agency has invested in food-tech start-ups in the area as a part of its “Space-F” project. The project encourages an influx of investment for the Thai food sector in light of the global food security crisis – which has been exacerbated by multiple factors of climate change, inflation and the ongoing war in Ukraine. NIA is proposing the use of “deep tech” as the primary way to get Bangkok on the map as a food-tech capital. The project has been running for about three years, with a focus on funding start-ups, while providing support and mentorship. They do so for local and overseas start-ups, moving them to build businesses in Bangkok. Prapit Chanma, director-general of the Royal Irrigation Department, said that many areas in Mun and Chi river basins were flooded and if the storm brought more rains, inundated areas and river overflows would expand there. The level of the Mun River was rising. It had not overflowed to Muang district of Ubon Ratchathani yet but water flowed out of sewers and flooded some low-lying areas. The lower Warin Chamrap district was already partially flooded. Myanmar’s former beauty queen and an anti-junta activist, Thaw Nandar Aung, aka “Han Lay”, who has been stranded in Thailand due to immigration difficulties, has finally been granted asylum in Canada. Local and international media outlets, such as the BBC, cited sources saying that she will be leaving Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi on September 27th, heading to Incheon first and then on to Toronto, Canada. The 23-year-old has been stranded since September 21st, and attempts were reportedly made by Myanmar authorities to have her repatriated, but she was not forcibly sent back. While no confirmation has been provided by the military administration in Myanmar as to whether her passport has been revoked, spokesperson General Zaw Min Tun had said that cooperation of neighbouring countries and Interpol has been requested by arresting “fugitives” with warrants issued for them.
