Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reporters hotfooted it to Pranburi in Prachuap Khiri Khan after a Facebook post from a couple who found what they thought was either a lump of jasper or even a meteorite. Phichet Raksawong, 57, explained that he was doing some plowing ahead of planting vegetables when he heard a sharp noise and found the black object. His wife Nantawan Rodwong posted online to see if an expert would come forward to say what it was. But their neighbors in the village of Ban Huay Salaeng Phan were convinced it was an auspicious sign from the heavens. They were busy snapping up lottery tickets using the house number and the couple's vehicle registration plate for the next draw due at the end of next week. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: 77kaoded 77kaoded reported that Ban Mee police in Lopburi, central Thailand, and rescue services were called to Route 205 after a collison between a pick-up and a motorcycle with sidecar in heavy rain outside the temple of Wat Wang Neua. A foreigner in an overturned Nissan pick-up with Chanthaburi plates had already been taken to hospital when police arrived. It was not known where he was from, his age or name. But the media put in brackets that he was a black man. Dead in the flooded paddy field was 57 year old Sophon. Witnesses said they saw the pick-up being driven at speed. It had gone into flood waters on the pot holed four lane road where the driver lost control and collided with the motorcyclist. The police were preparing charges of negligent driving causing death against the foreigner. The media had a video of the aftermath of the accident with rescue services removing the dead man from the paddy in a white sheet. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. "Good Samaritan" arrested after stealing Richard Mille watch and diamond ring from Benz driver Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported on the arrest of a man known as "Jack Bang Phoon" who went to help a person involved in a car/bike accident but ended up stealing expensive items from him. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1272706-good-samaritan-arrested-after-stealing-richard-mille-watch-and-diamond-ring-from-benz-driver/ -
Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported on the arrest of a man known as "Jack Bang Phoon" who went to help a person involved in a car/bike accident but ended up stealing expensive items from him. The incident reached further than the Suan Phrik Thai police in Pathum Thani probably due to the influence of the victim, suggests ASEAN NOW. Deputy commander of the RTP Lt-Gen Jiraphop Phuridech got involved in instructing his subordinates to investigate and solve the crime. The suspect Pongdech, 41, was arrested a week after the incident and charged with theft at night using a conveyance. The charge had caveats of stealing during an accident or disaster. He was found in possession of a Richard Mille watch and a diamond ring of The iCON brand. He admitted everything after the arrest in Bang Phoon, Muang district of Pathum Thani. On 13th September the victim of the theft driving a Mercedes Benz had had a collision with a motorcyclist outside the Phoon Sap market in Pathum Thani. The Benz driver stopped to offer assistance and called rescue services. When they arrived he helped them load the motorcyclist into an ambulance. While this was happening Pongdech had arrived on a motorcycle and said that he could be a witness to what happened. He gave his phone number. When the Benz driver returned to his vehicle he found that a bag containing the expensive watch and diamond ring that he had placed in the middle of the rear seat had gone. So had Pongdech. A call to the number showed it was not Pongdech's number at all, it was someone who wasn't there. Suan Phrik Thai police then the Crime Suppression Division found out that Pongdech was a worker at a cafe and a little over a week later had him in custody. He had previous convictions for drugs and snatch theft and had been released from prison in Phrae, northern Thailand, in 2016. He is now in the hands of the Suan Phrik Thai police. The cheapest Richard Mille watches can go for 2 million baht, the most expensive ones can be much more. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Motorcyclist dies in flames reminding everyone of the peril of "green lights" in Thailand Sanook Thai Caption: Explosion during collision A horrendous accident in the north east of Thailand caught on video should serve as a warning to people to be especially careful going through green lights in Thailand, suggests ASEAN NOW. Sanook Thai Caption: Explosion during collision A horrendous accident in the north east of Thailand caught on video should serve as a warning to people to be especially careful going through green lights in Thailand, suggests ASEAN NOW. The dash cam footage - posted on the page of Pompam Transport on Facebook - comes with a viewer discretion advisory. The footage shows a motorcyclist in a helmet waiting patiently at the Chiang Yeun interestion in Mahasarakham. The dash cam vehicle appears to give him a quick tap on the horn to remind him that the lights are green. But he fails to look right. He is instantly hit by an ambulance from Kalasin going through the red light. There is a large explosion. The shocked car driver can only say he must be dead as he proceeds forward. Sanook reported that Channel 3 said the man was a 60 year old. He died in hospital. He had just been to buy gasoline for a lawn mower and that exploding caused the fire. Police confirmed that the ambulance had gone through a red light. ASEAN NOW advises all motorists to never proceed in Thailand when you have a green light. Always look in multiple directions for red light infringements by other motorists first. That could save your life, especially on a motorcycle. We reported this week that more than 80% of road fatalities on the Thai roads are on two wheels. It is thought that around 20,000 motorcyclists die annually on the roads in Thailand. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Daily News Thai Caption: Foul mouthed rant "live" Daily News reported that there was a huge amount of online chatter and comment after a female employee of a bank went "live" on Twitter as she was looking at documents and counting money. She was having difficulty as the notes were all stuck together then found that the pile of notes had been stapled together. What followed was a foul mouthed rant against a customer for doing that - Daily News took out all the bad language with several "xxx". Colleagues didn't castigate her just agreed that it was hard to see the staples. KBank Live responded (that's Kasikorn, one of Thailand's most famous banks). They said they had spoken to the staffer about her inappropriate behaviour and advised on her future conduct. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Chiang Mai Chosen as World Festival And Event City For 2022 by Krajangwit Johjit CHIANG MAI (NNT) - The International Festivals And Events Association (IFEA) has selected Chiang Mai as one of the five “World Festival And Event Cities” for 2022. by Krajangwit Johjit CHIANG MAI (NNT) - The International Festivals And Events Association (IFEA) has selected Chiang Mai as one of the five “World Festival And Event Cities” for 2022. Chiang Mai, along with five other cities worldwide, received the title at the 65th Annual IFEA Convention, Expo & Retreat. Chiang Mai deputy governor Worayarn Boonyanarat and Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) northern division director Jutha Tharachai represented the city during the convention, which was held in McAllen, Texas, from September 19-21, 2022. According to the deputy governor, IFEA chose Chiang Mai as one of the five cities because it meets the criteria of being able to stage events in close collaboration with local partners, as well as serve as a role model for how to utilize events and festivals to promote the economy. The city also met the requirements for managing Covid-19, which was introduced as an additional factor by IFEA this year. The northern division director of TCEB stated that TCEB and the Visit Lanna Association would work with all sectors to showcase the province as an "outstanding destination" for international events through soft power. Aside from Chiang Mai, the four other cities chosen are Jinju (South Korea), Penghu County (Taiwan), McAllen (Texas, United States), and Philadelphia (Pennsylvania, United States). -- © Copyright NNT 2022-09-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Woman smashes up her new car in Korat - she's furious with the dealership but no one mentions the company Daily News Thai Caption: Smashing up a "red plate" (new) car A story from Nakhon Ratchasima about a furious woman smashing up her new car because it has been nothing but a problem since she bought it speaks volumes about defamation laws and consumer protection in Thailand, suggests ASEAN NOW. Daily News Thai Caption: Smashing up a "red plate" (new) car A story from Nakhon Ratchasima about a furious woman smashing up her new car because it has been nothing but a problem since she bought it speaks volumes about defamation laws and consumer protection in Thailand, suggests ASEAN NOW. Neither the lady nor Daily News dared mention the make of car. Even when customer service has been poor, mentioning the name of the company can land the customer or the media who report it into heaps of trouble. This has been seen when guests complain about hotels. Several times in the Daily News article the media said "a certain manufacturer" and put the same term into the mouth of the furious owner. Runhathai, 42, (surname withheld), a businesswoman was pictured climbing on her black car in the parking lot of the Korat town hall. She took a crow bar to the front windshield and smashed it up in a sarcastic gesture designed to shame the unnamed company. She bought the car in February for 1,474,000 baht and since then has only done 938 kms. She said there had been problems with a tire pressure gauge, connections to an android phone, rear sensor malfunctions, persistent engine vibrations and reverse gear problems. She'd been into the service center and they said they had looked at it and said everything was normal after repairs. She begged to differ. She wanted a new one. They refused. She even offered to pay between 300,000 to 400,000 baht to trade it in and get a new one. Again the company refused. She went to the office of the Consumer Protection Board but her case went quiet. "I can't stand it any more," she told the media. "So I decided to smash it up so that the company will really know how I feel. It was a new car but it has meant nothing but repairs. "I will let them repair it then I'm going to sell it and get what I can for it. Then I'm going to buy a new one". She gave no indication if she'd be buying one of the same make or another make but her final comment was more grumbling about poor customer service. The media called her "handsome" - this was because she had the appearance of a "tomboy". -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Source: Facebook A stunning model from Myanmar who has spoken out about the regime in her homeland and sought refuge in Thailand has been barred entry back to the kingdom. Han Lay - Miss Grand Myanmar 2020 - made an impassioned speech at a pageant in Thailand that angered the generals in Yangon. She spent most of the last year in Thailand fearing arrest if she returned to her homeland. On Thursday she found herself detained by immigration at Suvarnabhumi airport after arriving back from a trip to Da Nang in Vietnam. File photo There were irregularities with her passport, these believed to emanate from claims made on her behalf that an Interpol notice had been issued and that the junta in Yangon had revoked her passport. Thai immigration were refusing her entry and planning to send her back to Vietnam yesterday. Daily News reported that the Thai immigration bureau said that Han Lay - who is aged 22 or 23 according to a Wikipedia page - was refused entry yesterday under section 12(1) of the 1979 Immigration Act. File photo They were negotiating with an airline about her return to her previous destination. She was being detained at the airport but had not been arrested. They said this was because she was named in an Interpol Red Notice as a wanted person after her passport was revoked. Han Lay spoke out against the Myanmar junta at the Miss Grand International Pageant in Bangkok and called for help from the international community. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Daily News Thai Caption: Cruel debt collectors even took 11 baht Daily News reported that they were contacted by a woman they called Samai, 52, who is a restaurant owner in the Nong Phai district of Phetchabun in north eastern Thailand. She's been having a hard time of late and turned to a new group of loan sharks to help make ends meet. She said that on Monday morning they turned up in a car as she was preparing to open her shop and demanded money. She said she had just been to market to get food to sell using up the last of her money and asked them to come back in the afternoon. A loud argument developed that could be heard all down the soi as the gang demanded payment and Samai thought she might have to pawn something. In the end they grabbed her last eleven baht and left. They turned up again the next day and there was a policeman in the restaurant but he did nothing. Calls to the police later telling the constabulary that the gang were defaming the force shouting their mouths off about not being scared of arrest prompted some action. The cops told the loan sharks to go easy on payments for those in difficulty. Samai said that this gang was a new one added to the 4/5 who operate in the area providing short term loans. She said that she ran into financial difficulties what with having to look after her child and four relatives and having to meet 1,000 rent for her shop, 500-600 baht utility bills and costs of food for the restaurant each morning of 800-1000 baht. So she borrowed 4,000 baht receiving 3,600 then had to pay 200 baht a day for 24 days. When she ran into repayment difficulties she begged the gang to let her repay 100-150 baht a day but they refused. Gangs such as these - effectively demanding interest of around 30% in a month - are operating all over Thailand, notes ASEAN NOW. They are illegal yet the police do very little with the media suggesting that they are either scared of acting or in league with the gangs. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
