Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reporters went to Hua Mark police station in downtown Bangkok yesterday after part of the building shared with Hua Mark fire services collapsed. The floor on the first floor had collapsed by between 20 and 50 centimeters on Wednesday in an area of 50 square meters. It was used by both police and firemen as a traffic and accident reduction center and was attached to an equipment storage area. There were cracks elsewhere in the building too. Station chief Pol Col Setphan Srisakhon said that police civil engineers had been on the scene and said that the basic structural integrity of the building was sound. The part that collapsed was a later addition to the building. The UTCC’s survey showed that household with monthly income of 50,000 Baht had debts of more than 500,000 Baht and most of those debts were in the personal loan and credit card loan, with these loans/credit card spending mostly used for buying consumer goods and/or durable goods. Thailand’s household debt is expected to be around 90% of the gross domestic product (GDP) or 14.97 trillion Baht, the highest in 16-year of record and world’s 11th highest, by the end of 2022. Cops went to a zinc sheeting shack in Soi Choi Pheng where they found 60 year old Wongsin face up in bed. He'd been dead at least three days. There was no sign of foul play. Next door neighbor Jan Sribua, 67, said that Wong had worked in a factory but had turned to drink. She would regularly make sure he was eating properly with food handouts. She last saw the deceased on Saturday. But today after preparing a meal for her relative she decided to take a nap and while she was dozing off heard a voice in her ear: "Mr Wong is dead". She got up and took a shower and tried to get her husband to go next door but he was afraid so she peeked in herself and found her neighbor dead and called the police. A royal organisation heard about the incident and the injured animal was taken to Kaset University in Bangkok for treatment. Pol Capt Sanit Sannichart of Muang district police said that on Wednesday a "Mr A" surrendered to police and was charged with animal cruelty for which there is a possible fine of 40,000 baht and/or two years in prison. The court decided yesterday to fine him 10,000 baht reduced to 5,000 on admission with no jail time. "A" said he was deeply sorry to animal lovers for what had happened. He said he had sounded his horn and thought the dog had moved aside. His animal loving girlfriend had been unable to sleep or have food for days and when he had seen the news he had contemplated suicide. He consulted with WDT (Watchdog Thailand) before surrendering to police. This happened because the lock on the door had been installed the wrong way round. When the door locked she was unable to get out. Despite her screams and efforts to free herself it all came to nothing. Desperate after several days surviving on tap water she scribbled a farewell note on the bathroom wall in cream. It began: "I got stuck on the 22nd and couldn't get out..." Picture: Thai Rath It continued that if she died please would relatives handle her affairs for her. Fortunately it didn't come to that after the woman's elder sister, unable to contact her on the phone for days, told Phrakhanong, Bangkok, police that her sister was missing. She lived alone. Pol Capt Charnchai Sornsiang and a patrol went to the four story town house in On Nut Soi 27 and found the gate locked and a metal grill sealing the front. It was a simple matter to just open the ensuite bathroom door and inside was "A" in an exhausted state. She said that at 8 pm on August 22nd she had decided to go to bed. She placed her phone on the bed. But after finishing her business she was unable to get out. The door had always been like that with the knob on the outside. Picture: Thai Rath She screamed and screamed for help but no one heard her and tried to use things in the bathroom to break down the door but failed. She wrote the farewell note in desperation fearing she would die. Capt Charnchai advised her to seek hospital treatment as she hadn't eaten for three days. He said that the woman's predicament was made worse by the fact the whole house was completely locked up and she was high up inside the body of the house and couldn't be heard. The decision also means almost 60 staff will be out of a job. The victim, according to reports, was a Thai man between the age of 25 to 30 years old. He wore a black shirt and black shorts with 400 baht in the pocket and did not carry an ID, so the rescue services could not identify his real name. BANGKOK, (TNA) – Past COVID-19 outbreaks and arrival restrictions caused Thai household debts to keep rising, according to the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce. The Center for Economic and Business Forecasting of UTCC found the growing household debts from its survey on 1,350 households sampled nationwide. Most samples earned more than 50,000 baht a month. Thanavath Phonvichai, chief advisor to the center said the survey found that COVID-19 outbreaks and the consequent country closure raised household debts which were already higher than household income also due to the high cost of living. He said that 99.6% of the surveyed households were in debt. The country has pledged to provide support in pursuit of global health security on laboratory systems and workforce development. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul held a bilateral discussion with the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services Andrea Palm, as part of the APEC Health Week events in Bangkok. The U.S. Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services on this occasion congratulated Thailand for hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting this year, praising Thailand for its effective COVID-19 response in terms of medicine, treatment, and vaccine. Mrs. Palm admired the cooperation of Thai people on preventative measures such as mask wearing and physical distancing, and thanked Thailand for submitting data on the virus to the U.S. in the early days of the outbreak. The U.S. health official paid Thailand a compliment on its role in global health security. The country has been selected to host the ASEAN Center for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED), which is officially opening tomorrow. She also extended the invitation for Thailand to attend next year’s APEC High-Level Meeting on Health and the Economy, which will be hosted by the United States. Thailand on this occasion thanked the United States for the assistance, particularly on the donation of mRNA vaccines in millions of doses. Thailand, as a member of the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA), pledged to support the work of the organization in the areas of laboratory systems and workforce development, which are two of the GHSA’s action packages. This visit is a part of the effort to tighten Thailand-Malaysia cooperation on mental health services. Malaysian Minister of Health Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar led a group of officials to observe the operations and services provided at Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry in Bangkok. His visit was welcomed by Dr. Amporn Benjaponpithak, Director General of Thailand’s Department of Mental Health. Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry is a facility that provides mental health services to all. The institute provides treatment for diseases caused by substance abuse, mental illness, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The facility also provides help to those with suicidal thoughts. The Malaysian health minister on this visit observed the institute’s neurocognitive clinic for dementia patients, a mental health clinic for children and teenagers, and the brain and mind rehabilitation center. He then observed the operations of the Red Roof and Friends cafes, where mental health patients can learn, practice, and improve their social skills. These coffee shops are Thailand’s first social enterprises for mental health patients that aim to help assist their reintegration into society with good quality of life.
