By Goongnang Suksawat Phuket – Fruit vendors at the monkey viewpoint at Koh Siray say less tourists and locals have visited and bought fruits for monkeys and the vendors put the blame on monkeypox, even though it isn’t monkeys responsible for the current spread of the disease globally. The Phuket Express reporters visited the Monkey Viewpoint at Koh Sirey in Rassada, Mueang Phuket district yesterday. There are about 200 monkeys at the viewpoint near a mangrove forest. Fruit vendors told the Phuket Express, “There are fewer people buying fruit for monkeys in the past week. The cannabis debate continues, but can Thailand control it? OPINION | by Michael Bridge file photo The supposed legalization of cannabis announced by the Thai government has been widely reported around the world. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1267118-the-cannabis-debate-continues-but-can-thailand-control-it/ -
file photo OPINION | by Michael Bridge The supposed legalization of cannabis announced by the Thai government has been widely reported around the world. To be honest, so far it seems to have been a great PR exercise for the country and in particular for the Tourism Authority of Thailand. They now expect the return of the swinging 60’s, with hordes of tourists used to eating cookies in Amsterdam or across California, now heading to the true Land of the Smiles!!! In addition, the medical benefits are also well documented, so this will be a boost for Thailand’s alternative medical tourism as well. Now that has to be a good move. Clinics are adding this service alongside facelifts and beauty treatments and are also offering mail-order services as well. Laws changing For a long time, Thailand held the reputation of having some of the harshest laws on cannabis. That, however, has started to change since the news and development of legal CBD started to trend in the country. If you are living in Thailand, then chances are you might have seen local restaurants and food outlets selling cannabis-infused beverages and edibles pop up in the last year or so. This has primarily got to do with the Thai Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), and the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has taken strides to deregulate cannabis and hemp plants. I know several friends here in Thailand who have also taken a medical and are now registered officially to take Cannabis oils for their issues at hospitals and clinics. They are given a signed document which they can show to Thai authorities if they are stopped. All this is great news for those people who now rely on cannabis to get better, or at least to feel human again. Problems ahead The problems though have just started as the whole issue of making cannabis legal opens up a can of worms. With very professional online websites now allowing us to order everything from oil to ready-made joints, where does that leave the end user? Customs response The customs department of Thailand held a press conference in the wake of the liberalization on marijuana and hemp products recently. They wanted to put the record straight for producers and users of weed on how customs are treating the issue. The strongest message from their spokesperson was that importers must conform to all requirements that will be followed to the letter. Smuggling and misrepresenting goods are serious offenses that can carry ten-year custodial sentences. They pointedly warned casual users from taking the drug out of Thailand. Customs wouldn't do anything in Thailand but the importation of the drug into other countries remains illegal with some cases facing the death penalty. Already one tourist who flew to Bali from Bangkok recently with a small amount of weed in his luggage was arrested on arrival. file photo Further down the line the tobacco cartels will start introducing their own brands of pot cigarettes and e-cigs in the near future. Several major manufacturers have already copyrighted names like Cannabis, Reefer, and Happy Cigarettes. One day with their immense financial and political muscle, these corporations will make it become legal to sell these cigarettes over the counter. Meanwhile, the Thai government needs to act quickly to explain what can and cannot be done with Cannabis within Thailand before it gets out of hand. If we go into the local garden centre and buy a young cannabis plant to grow at home, is this legal? Can we smoke the cannabis grown if it is for personal use? What happens if we have friends around for dinner and after a beer or a glass of wine, we offer them a joint. Does that mean we are seen as a mini dealer? Online to your doorstep You can already order a variety of items online from CBD oils to cannabis cornflakes, soap, tea bags even cannabis popcorn all delivered to your doorstep if you live in Thailand. But then sending them overseas to friends and family is not recommended. Sure, regulated manufacturers here will sign contracts with medically approved outfits overseas. So at the moment that is likely to be the only way Grandad in Detroit or Manchester will be able to use to help them sleep at night. What happens outside Thailand is a huge different issue and could take years to be resolved. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-27 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. House panel cuts ฿7.4 billion for two F-35A combat jets, Thai air force defends plan A House subcommittee scrutinising procurement projects of state agencies decided yesterday (Monday) to cut the 7.4-billion-baht budget for the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) to procure two US-made F-35A combat jets, on the grounds that the US Congress has not yet approved the sale of the aircraft to Thailand and the acquisition is not urgent. A House subcommittee scrutinising procurement projects of state agencies decided yesterday (Monday) to cut the 7.4-billion-baht budget for the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) to procure two US-made F-35A combat jets, on the grounds that the US Congress has not yet approved the sale of the aircraft to Thailand and the acquisition is not urgent. Pheu Thai MP Yutthapong Charassathien, deputy chair of the House subcommittee on durable goods, information technology, state enterprises and revolving funds, said that the RTAF could not provide a clear answer to the panel about whether or when the US Congress would approve the sale of the jets to the RTAF, adding that the decision-making process by the US Congress normally takes up to 20 months. The panel felt that the 7.4 billion baht, already allocated in the 2023 fiscal year for the procurement of the planes, should be cut for the time being and be used for other more urgent projects or to help ease the hardships of people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. by Namo Vananupong BANGKOK (NNT) - The Mor Prom mobile application, initially developed to track Covid cases, is now being turned into a national online health platform. The app has continually seen added features and now boasts 32 million users. The Ministry of Public Health is collaborating with private firms to develop the Mor Prom mobile application into Thailand’s national digital health platform. The expanded app will offer Thais a convenient and easily accessible health platform boasting 12 new features. The app was initially developed for COVID-19 case tracing and for people to register their Covid vaccination appointments. The new features will turn the app into a platform that links to drug stores and many more public health service units. Currently, about 15,000 service units and drug stores are linked to the app. The security aspect of the new Mor Prom app will comply with international safety standards for health information and electronic transactions. The National Cyber Security Agency and Electronic Transactions Development Agency are providing support for this aspect. The first of the 12 new features is the COVID-19 vaccination certification service, which displays an individual’s vaccination record for use when traveling. The second feature displays Covid test results taken via the ATK as well as PCR methods. The third feature enables users to search for a Covid testing unit near them and the fourth feature provides site check-ins via a ‘beacon’ system. Other features include a digital health certificate display, money and organ donation services, a chatbot feature, and information on health policies. The remaining features are health history display, health appointment, health insurance policy checks, and telemedicine. The new features will start to become available on the app in August and September. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-07-26 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. File photo The British pound sterling hit its highest rate for four months against the Thai baht. The currency has been poor against the Thai baht in recent months though the Thai currency has broken records against the US dollar in 2022 trading. Now following a long period of political instability in Westminster it appears that sterling is bouncing back. Latest rates on Super Rich today: US Dollar - 36.3 - 36.6 baht Sterling 44.15 baht Euro 37.4 baht AUS $ 25.4 baht Can $ 28.45 baht NZ $ 22.9 baht ASEAN NOW notes that many thousands of British pensioners live in Thailand but many are at the whim of exchange rates. The recent rise in the pound will be comforting even though a high of 46.4 baht - achieved last August - is still some way off. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-26 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Thai Rath It was a scene directly out of the Amazing Thailand book of gestures. DPM Prawit Wongsuwon had just arrived in his fancy van to inspect a water management project in Samut Prakan. Instead of handshakes he was greeted by MP Krungsriwilai Sutinphuak who prostrated himself - known as a "graap" in Thai - at the feet of the deputy prime minister. The DPM looked taken aback as aids helped the MP back to his feet, this all in a video posted by Thai Rath. Krungsriwilai was one of six MPs who voted against Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda and Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin in the House no confidence debate. Prawit - also known as Big Pom in the Thai media - said that the air was cleared following the group not toeing the party line and there was no need for a committee to be set up to investigate, reported Thai Rath. It would be considered by a party board to see if the rebel MPs had broken party rules. Prior to a vote on Saturday Prawit had instructed Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) MPs to cast votes of confidence for PM Prayuth Chan-ocha and ten cabinet members. However, six ignored the PPRP party leader and broke ranks. The group believed that Anupong has ignored Samut Prakan's people and wanted Prawit to take over as interior minister. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-26 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
