By Editor The Public Relations Department of Koh Samui is reporting that the Transport Minister, Saksayam Chidchop, has approved a project to construct the Koh Samui – Khanom Bridge connecting the island with the mainland of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. It was reported that Saksayam has given the green light for the Koh Samui – Khanom Bridge as one of five projects in which the Transport Ministry, Highways Department, Rural Roads Department, and Expressway Authority of Thailand will work together to study, plan, and design the bridge. A budget for 25 billion THB will be spent on the Koh Samui – Khanom Bridge which will be 17 kilometres long, connecting Phangka Beach in the southwest of Koh Samui in Surat Thani to the Khanom district of Nakhon Si Thammarat. The bridge aims to solve the big queuing problems at the ferry piers, with delays of up to five hours for a ferry from Koh Samui to Khanom district during the long weekends. Additionally it was reported that some ferry companies have reduced their services from departures every hour to only six ferries available per day due to the decreasing number of tourists and rising fuel prices. The Koh Samui – Khanom Bridge was the idea of Virach Pongchababnapa, a local hotel owner on Koh Samui. He created a 3D model and proposed it to the Transport Ministry. Locals and officials agreed that the bridge would benefit both Koh Samui locals and tourists. The transportation between Koh Samui and Surat Thani will be more convenient and faster. One official added that the province and country could also earn more income by introducing a toll. We are living in the hottest period for 125,000 years by Michael Bridge File photo The heatwaves across the planet are happening when average world temperatures have risen by just over 1C from their pre-industrial levels. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1266413-we-are-living-in-the-hottest-period-for-125000-years/ -
File photo by Michael Bridge The heatwaves across the planet are happening when average world temperatures have risen by just over 1C from their pre-industrial levels. We are living in the hottest period for 125,000 years, according to the UN's climate science body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). We know what is behind this - greenhouse gas emissions caused by our burning of fossil fuels like coal and gas. Concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere are at the highest level for two million years and rising, according to the IPCC. If all the promises governments made at the UN COP26 climate conference in Glasgow last year are implemented, then we're looking at temperatures rising by 2.4C by the end of the century. But the bad news is that emissions of CO2 continue to increase. Without big cuts by 2030, we could see temperatures go even higher. Europe swelters The UK Met Office issued a red extreme heat warning for Monday and Tuesday in much of England, with temperatures of up to 41C forecast. Europe is experiencing record high temperatures, however even SE Asia is reporting unusually hot temperatures too. Yesterday Hanoi and 14 provinces in northern and central Vietnam continued to record temperatures of 36-38 degrees Celsius, and the searing heat is expected to last another 1-2 days. In central Vietnam, Nghe An’s capital Vinh was the hottest location at over 38 degrees. Compared to heatwaves in June, actual temperatures now aren’t that high, but the feel factor is just as bad. According to the weather experts, low levels of moisture (45-65 percent) with long periods of temperatures over 35 degrees (11-17 hours) have contributed to the unpleasant sensation. Cloudy night skies also trap the heat longer near the ground, they say. Heat waves in northern Vietnam typically begin towards the end of April and linger in May, June, and July. Due to La Nina this year, the region enjoyed cool days in May, delaying the onset of heat until June. The hottest day ever in Thailand was on April 28th, 2016, in Muang district of the northern province of Mae Hong Son, when the temperature recorded at 44.6C. Other record hot days in Thailand were as follows: April 28th, 1960, in the north-eastern province of Udon Thani, 43.9oC. May 22nd, 1983 in Bangkok, 40.8C. This week the average midday temperatures were 37 degrees. UK Panics Meanwhile, the UK has had one of its hottest days on record, with a high of 38.1C (100.6F) - and forecasters are warning it will be warmer still later this week. The high was recorded in Santon Downham, Suffolk, on Monday, while 37C was exceeded in several places. The current highest temperature in the UK is 38.7C, in Cambridge in July 2019. A high of 38.5C was reached in Faversham, Kent, in August 2003, making Monday the third hottest day on record - and the hottest day of the year so far. Network Rail said people should travel only "if absolutely necessary" on Monday and Tuesday, with some cancellations, and speed restrictions in place across the network. There were concerns about rails buckling in the heat!!! The Ministry of Defence said aircraft were using alternative airfields after reports of the tarmac melting on the runway at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. Flights were also suspended at Luton Airport after a section of the runway lifted due to the hot weather, the airport said. Red Warning It is the first time the Met Office has issued a red warning since the system was introduced last year. It means "widespread impacts on people and infrastructure" are expected, with "substantial changes in working practices and daily routines" required. The National Fire Chiefs' Council had warned it was almost inevitable there would be wildfires in the next few days and a large blaze has broken out in woodland at Lickey Hills Country Park on the edge of Birmingham. The extreme heat has also put pressure on the NHS, but Health Secretary Steve Barclay said the government was "closely monitoring the situation", with the "highest point of concern" was on Tuesday afternoon. Soaring temperatures are also having a devastating impact on much of Europe and North Africa, with authorities in western France warning of a "heat apocalypse" in 15 regions. Wildfires have been raging from Greece to Morocco, with thousands being evacuated from and more than 1,000 deaths have been attributed to the heat in Portugal and Spain in recent days. Paddling pools are out, beer gardens are brimming. But a startling proportion of the UK population will be cooped up in their bedrooms having the strange experience of nursing a fever and sore throat in July as Covid infections continue to soar in the third major wave this year. The World Weather Attribution group analyzed historical weather data that suggested early, long heat waves that impact a massive geographical area are rare, once-a-century events. But the current level of global warming, caused by human-caused climate change, has made those heat waves 30 times more likely. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Opposition chief whip Sutin Klungsang has ridiculed today (Tuesday) the government’s poster for Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and the ten ministers targeted for censure debate, the last one for this administration which already began this morning. Borrowing the title of the most recent James Bond film “No Time to Die”, the poster declares that the prime minister will not be “killed”, but Sutin claims that he will be “crushed into a pulp”. Before the start of the debate in parliament this morning, the Pheu Thai MP representing Maha Sarakham province told the media that the Opposition has lined up about 30 MPs who will “grill” the prime minister specifically on a range of issues, ranging from energy, the economy and corruption to foreign affairs. He said that the Opposition will spend about two and a half days on the prime minister and hopes that the public will not become bored, adding that they will monitor the mood of the audience as well. For the censure debate today, he said 5-6 ministers will be targeted, including Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob, Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn and, if time permits, Deputy Interior Minister Nipon Boonyamanee. Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported on the actions of a Thai man from Lampang in the far north of Thailand. Ek, 21, (a ficticious name) had been to see his girlfriend but she was playing hard to get and he was unable to satisfy his carnal urges. He left her place still in a sexual tizzy and dropped in at the Anantayot Park to get out of the rain. Here he became further sexually aroused on seeing a brown Thai breed of dog - a bitch - and decided to take her into the toilets. He was seen doing this by a member of the public who was out feeding the strays and saw Ek with his trousers down clearly up to no good in the loos with the dog. The police arrived in the nick of time as Ek had only done some "helping of himself" (a Thai euphemism for masturbation). The dog's honor remained intact. Ek was taken away for questioning and would be let go if there was no evidence of a crime having been committed. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Thai Rath A heartfelt plea by overworked doctors has been sent to Thailand's health minister and DPM Anutin Charnvirakul. The medics have also called for an emergency meeting on Thursday. The Facebook post by the union that oversees the welfare of the nation's doctors said that medical practitioners were working 72 hours without a break. They were the frontline of help to the Thai public but their own health was suffering due to unreasonable demands. They were exhausted, missing their families and in need of rest. The union proposed meeting with Anutin at 1.30 pm this Thursday, reported Thai Rath. The media had a file picture of Anutin but had clearly not contacted him for his response to the concerns of the union. Anutin has been especially busy recently promoting medicinal marijuana, notes ASEAN NOW. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: 77kaoded 77kaoded reported on the antics of a 35 year old man called Prajat who went crazy in Krabi with a 50 cm "Sparta" knife attacking an assistant phu yai ban and his wife as they took their six year old to school. The assistant PYB made a citizen's arrest before Muang District police arrived at the scene on the Petchkasen Krabi - Neua Klong Road. The video showed that the attacker was still unwilling to go quietly. He was incoherent and thrashing about and later shuffling about on his bottom. Kasem, 45, showed on his hand how he had been attacked. His wife Rorya, 40 was also superficially hurt. As they were riding a motorbike taking their six year old to school they said that Prajiat accosted them saying they were trespassing. He quickly got a large knife and attacked them without warning. The assistant PYB managed with the help of his wife to overcome the attacker. Drugs are suspected causing a paranoid attack. It wasn't the first time that Prajiat has gone berserk, though apparently the worst yet. A friend helped by taking the uninjured child to school. The wife said it was fortunate that she was driving the bike and that her son was not injured in the ambush. Her husband was able to ward off the attack and perform a citizen's arrest. Prajiat is in custody facing assault and weapons charges. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: 77kaoded 77kaoded reported that the Phatthalung police took action after a 14 year old child was abducted from Nakhon Sri Thammarat. The parents went to the police there but they did nothing. So they went to the media in their city who contacted counterparts in the far south in the case that concerns a "person of influence". The girl was put in a pick-up by her employer and driven south. The parents needed help - they are dirt poor and only had the money to get to the south, not for board and lodging when there. Picture: 77kaoded The Phatthalung police were able to help the parents after they arrived. They went to a house in Jong Thanon sub-district. The man who abducted her - Moo, 29 - ran off and after a hunt could not be located. But the parents were reunited with their daughter amid many tears. They were shown where the young teen was tied to a bed and threatened if she tried to escape. DES: We're fighting to keep Thailand's youth away from pornographic material Picture: Siam Rath The spokeswoman for the DES or Digital Economy and Society Ministry that monitors the internet in Thailand said that everything was being done to protect young people from online pornography. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1266346-des-were-fighting-to-keep-thailands-youth-away-from-pornographic-material/ -
Picture: Siam Rath The spokeswoman for the DES or Digital Economy and Society Ministry that monitors the internet in Thailand said that everything was being done to protect young people from online pornography. Noppawan Huajaiman said that this was a concern of Thai PM Prayuth Chan-ocha who cares passionately about the nation's youngsters, reported Siam Rath. So the DES were monitoring the situation closely, following up on parental complaints, giving advice and ensuring that the law was followed to the letter. She said that court orders can be obtained to remove obscene content and offenders can be jailed for five years and get 100,000 baht fines under 2007 legislation. But she also said that parents can and should complain to platforms when they see obscene material. In most cases such material was against their own rules and they would remove it without action needed by the DES. The DES can be contacted on 1212 or on Facebook or their website 24/7. ASEAN NOW notes that the DES are widely ridiculed by critics around the world who say they are toothless and manned by people who haven't a clue as to how the internet actually works. Bans on certain people and sites are easily circumvented using simple tricks. Tricks that young people are sometimes more familiar with than the so called experts at the DES. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Sanook Authorities in Udon Thani went to investigate yesterday after a post online suggested that all the kids at a kindergarten got for lunch was a measly khai palo egg and a bit of rice. The post further claimed this was all P3 kids got too. Jessada Panatheuk from the watchdog Damrongtham head a delegation that met the deputy school director Suchart Khemthong, Nongyao Singhathongkoon in charge of the kitchens and all the teachers at Udon Thani Kindergarten, reported Sanook. There were ten dinner ladies in their hats doling out yesterday's lunch - fried rice with pork accompanied by some cucumber and a couple of ngoh, rambutans. Jessada declared that it was delicious, truly restaurant quality. The children are fed in classrooms on steel plates with sections. The school has no canteen so teachers serve the food themselves. It appeared that the parent who posted had either been economical with the truth or had misunderstood things. The week's menu looked great. Suchart said they never even served khai palo and he had no idea where the parent got that idea and that picture. Parents were welcome to send in their own lunch but what they provided was a good lunch and the children could always ask for more. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
