By Goongnang Suksawat Phuket – Not many beach goers were on Patong Beach today due to monsoon warnings and strong waves. Patong beach operators said their business income had decreased from before the holiday period but blamed it on the weather and not tourists. The Phuket Express visited Patong Beach yesterday (July 13th) which is the start of the long holidays. Thailand has a five-day-long weekend as two Buddhist holidays are approaching on July 13th for Asanha Bucha Day and the 14th for the beginning of the Buddhist Lent while the 15th was announced by the government as a special holiday. One of the beach operators told the Phuket Express, “Long holidays aside, this is low season and this time of year even well before Covid-19 has always been poor due to it being the monsoon season.” Full story: https://thephuketexpress.com/2022/07/13/phuket-sees-less-beach-goers-so-far-on-the-first-day-of-five-long-holidays-bad-weather-blamed/ -- © Copyright The Phuket Express 2022-07-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Around 50 small hotel owners held a protest at the parking lot behind Krungthai Bank branch at Patong beach yesterday to draw attention to their financial difficulties during a visit to the tourist island by Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam and his team. They had displayed placards on their financial woes but the demonstration ended peacefully after they were allowed to submit their petition to members of this delegation. So, are BA.4 BA.5 sub-variants containable in Thailand? OPINION | by Michael Bridge This week we reported that initial findings of research, conducted by the Thai Department of Medical Sciences, show that the COVID-19 Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants are likely to be more serious than the BA.2 sub-variant, says the department’s director-general, Dr.Supakit Sirilak. He said on Monday that the findings are based on random checks of 570 COVID-19 cases, conducted between July 2nd and 8th, by the Department of Medical Sciences. Among them,280 were found to be infected with BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants, 283 with the BA.2 sub-variant, five cases of BA.1 sub-variant and two cases which could not be clearly identified. Dr. Supakit said that 71.95% of the BA.4 and BA.5 cases and 28.05% of the BA.2 cases were found not to be serious, but out of thirteen severe cases, including lung infections and those who need ventilators or died, 76.92% of them were BA.4 and BA.5 cases, compared to 23.08% of BA.2 cases. From these initial findings, he said that BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants are more likely to cause more serious symptoms than the BA.2 sub-variant, adding that the incidents of BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variant infections are tending to increase in Thailand, with more serious cases in Bangkok than for BA.1 and BA.2 sub-variants. He admitted, however, that the number of cases examined by the Department of Medical Sciences is not enough to determine with certainty that BA.4 and BA.5 are more serious. Personal reactions In the past couple of weeks, two friends have posted positive for Covid, and they assume it could be one of the new variants. Both have had Covid before, but both agreed that this strain was a lot harder to manage. Coughing was the worst side effect and they both were very tired and had headaches for over nine days. OK, that is just two examples however with the relaxation of wearing masks the new variants are spreading fast. Another friend who has just tested positive thinks he caught the virus while being packed into a bus at the Suvarnabhumi airport when getting off a flight from Vietnam. US Data The coronavirus subvariant known as BA.5 accounted for nearly 54% of the country's Covid cases as of last Saturday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the States. A similar subvariant, BA.4, makes up 17% more. "They're taking over, so clearly they're more contagious than earlier variants of omicron," said David Montefiori, a professor at the Human Vaccine Institute at Duke University Medical Center. The two subvariants also appear to evade protection from vaccines and previous infections more easily than most of their predecessors. Montefiori estimated that BA.4 and BA.5 are about three times less sensitive to neutralizing antibodies from existing Covid vaccines than the original version of the omicron variant, BA.1. Other research suggests that BA.4 and BA.5 are four times more resistant to antibodies from vaccines than BA.2, which replaced the omicron variant as the U.S.'s dominant version of the coronavirus in April. No new Vaccine until the Winter The US Food and Drug Administration last week recommended modifying coming booster shots from Pfizer and Moderna to target BA.4 and BA.5 directly. Pfizer has told the media that it could have an updated vaccine targeting BA.4 and BA.5 ready to be distributed, but not until October. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Naew Na Thai Caption: Foreign media report! Thailand needs 100,000s of foreign workers Naew Na reported that Bloomberg said that "Thailand is short of 500,000 workers after (the) government lifted most Covid bans". Bloomberg said this particularly referred to the construction and fisheries sectors. Thais are unwilling to work for low salaries in unpleasant jobs. Poj Aramwattananont, deputy chief of the Thai chamber of commerce, called it a serious problem because getting the economy moving again meant many foreigners were needed to keep construction projects afloat. He said it was also problematic because economies like China and Japan also needed large numbers of foreign laborers, creating competition for them. Piroj Chotikasatien of the Department of Employment said that at the moment there are 250,000 foreign laborers in Thailand. Many are working illegally and there has been an amnesty announced so they can work legally with extensions of permission to stay to 2025. About 500 workers are trying to enter Thailand to work every day and 2,000 per day will be the norm soon. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-13 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported on the comments of cabinet ministers and Thai PM Prayuth Chan-ocha at the latest meeting of the Thai cabinet. When whip Anucha raised the whole question of the no confidence debate Prayuth said ministers should watch their tongues. He said everything will turn out okay in the end. Just be honest. Apparently there were no laughs around the table, observes ASEAN NOW. Jurin Laksanawisit, deputy prime minister and commerce minister, suggested that opposition MPs - he's a democrat - and government MPs be given equal time to speak at the debate. Prayuth also referred to the long holidays saying that those who look after the roads and the safety of the public don't get breaks even at New Year and Songkran. Though he didn't name them it appeared he was referring to the police. Prayuth heads the police commission and clearly feels sorry for the hardworking RTP, suggests ASEAN NOW. DPM Visanu made reference to the ongoing situation at Thai Airways mentioning their staff cuts, increase in passenger numbers and requests to sell aircraft. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-13 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
