In a neverending saga of Pattaya’s unfinished roadworks posing a threat to road users, a contractor’s negligence led to a motorcycle accident as a rider fell into an unmarked construction hole, injuring herself yesterday, June 30. Repeated incidents have frustrated locals. At 8.30pm, Pattaya’s Sawang Boriboon Rescue Centre in Chon Buri received a report of a motorcycle accident involving a construction hole on Phatthanakan Road in Nong Prue, Bang Lamung District. Upon arrival, rescue personnel discovered the injured woman, 28 year old Natthacha, who had already managed to climb out of the hole. Initial first aid was provided before she was transported to Bang Lamung Hospital for further treatment. The scene revealed a red Yamaha motorcycle partially submerged headfirst into the construction hole. Although metal barriers and plastic barricades bordered the excavation, there were no warning lights to signal the construction site. The area, known for its poor lighting, exacerbated the danger. Locals have voiced their concerns, noting that this is not an isolated incident. They have repeatedly contacted city officials but no effective measures have been taken to rectify the situation, resulting in frequent accidents at this particular spot. Natthacha, the injured rider, explained that she was on her way to deliver seafood in Pattaya when the accident occurred. The combination of light rain and the dark road conditions made it difficult to see the construction hole. The absence of warning lights led her to collide with a barricade, causing her motorcycle to lose control and fall into the hole. Police documented the scene and secured the motorcycle, awaiting Natthacha’s recovery before returning it to her. Pattaya police have pledged to coordinate with relevant agencies to address the hazardous conditions by installing clear construction warning lights and ensuring the safety of road users, reported KhaoSod. Local frustration continues to mount as residents emphasise the need for prompt and effective action to prevent further accidents. The repeated incidents at this location highlight the urgency for better safety measures and responsive governance. by Ryan Turner Image courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-07-01 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

BJT defends senators-elect from criticism over backgrounds by Ryan Turner Image: Sakchai Lalit/AP Photo The Bhumjaithai Party (BJT) is calling for an end to the criticism targeting senators-elect over their backgrounds, asserting that the election process was designed to give candidates from all walks of life an equal opportunity to join the Upper House. BJT party member and former MP, Somsak Prissananantakul released a statement on Facebook today. “Some senators-elect come from ordinary backgrounds. They do not belong to wealthy clans or famous families. Some are not university graduates. Right now, they are being bullied by some critics who show nothing but disrespect for their dignity.” Somsak highlighted the case of a senator-elect in Ang Thong province, who is reportedly being criticised for her educational background. “She only finished [Year 12] and she makes her living as a tailor, so they questioned why she was elected as a senator.” He also mentioned another senator-elect in the province, who has experience as a village chief and health volunteer, yet faces similar scrutiny despite her practical skills and experience. Somsak’s comments come amid allegations that the BJT has influenced the Senate election process. These claims arose following observations that a notable number of senators-elect appeared to have affiliations with the BJT, which has a strong political presence in the northeast. Responding to these allegations, Deputy Government spokesperson and BJT member, Karom Polpornklang, challenged critics to provide concrete evidence to support their accusations. “Every candidate had to follow the Election Commission’s regulations. We must respect the outcome of the Senate election.” The BJT maintains that the Senate election process was fair and inclusive, designed to ensure that individuals from less privileged backgrounds had the same opportunities as those from more affluent families, reported Bangkok Post. In separate news, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s ongoing efforts to address national issues and promote Thailand have failed to win over the majority of voters, according to a survey by NIDA Poll. The poll, published on June 29, also highlighted a decline in the popularity of Pheu Thai Party leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra and a rise in support for the Move Forward Party (MFP). Weather forecasts indicate a significant weather event today, with thunderstorms expected to impact 32 provinces in Thailand. The Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued warnings about potential dangers and advises residents to prepare for heavy rain and strong winds, particularly in Bangkok, where 40% rainfall coverage is anticipated. The forecast reveals moderate but weakening southwesterly monsoon effects over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. Although this reduction lowers overall rainfall intensity, thunderstorms remain likely in several regions, driven by a low-pressure system over northern Vietnam, leading to heavy rain in Thailand’s upper northern and northeastern provinces. Seafarers should note that sea waves could exceed 1 metre during thunderstorms, prompting caution. Mariners are advised to avoid navigating in affected areas. **Regional Breakdown:** - **Northern Region:** Thunderstorms expected in 40% of the area, with Chiang Rai, Phayao, and Nan provinces being hit hardest. Temperature lows: 24-27°C, highs: 33-37°C, with southwesterly winds at 10-15 km/h. - **Northeastern Region:** Similar conditions will affect 40% of the area, particularly in Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, and Ubon Ratchathani. Temperature lows: 24-25°C, highs: 33-35°C, with southwesterly winds at 10-20 km/h. - **Central Region:** Thunderstorms will cover 40% of the area, affecting locations such as Nakhon Sawan and Saraburi. Temperature lows: 24-26°C, highs: 35-37°C, with southwesterly winds at 10-20 km/h. - **Eastern Region:** Expect thunderstorms in 40% of the area, with significant impacts in Sa Kaeo and Chon Buri. Temperature lows: 25-28°C, highs: 31-35°C, with southwesterly winds at 15-30 km/h. - **Southern Region (East and West Coasts):** Both coasts will see thunderstorms covering 30% of the area, predominantly affecting Phetchaburi on the eastern side and Trang on the western side. Temperature lows: 23-26°C, highs: 32-36°C, with southwesterly winds at 15-30 km/h. Sea waves may exceed 1 metre during storms. - **Bangkok and Surrounding Areas:** The capital and its surroundings will experience thunderstorms in 40% of the area. Temperature lows: 26-28°C, highs: 33-36°C, with southwesterly winds at 10-20 km/h. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the weather's potential dangers. Mariners should especially heed warnings and stay safe out at sea. A tragic accident unfolded in Sanam Chai Khet District, Chachoengsao Province, early this morning when a motorcycle with a sidecar plunged into the Wang Elien Canal, resulting in the death of a mother and her son. The incident occurred at around 12:10am, June 30. Police Lieutenant Piyanat Boonchan, from Wangkhu Police Station, received an urgent call about a motorcycle accident in Ban Khlong Yai Soi. He and a team of rescuers from Phanom quickly rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a Honda Wave motorcycle with a sidecar, bearing the registration number ขขว 63 Chachoengsao, submerged in the canal. A floating shoe, a headlamp, and a mobile phone in the motorcycle's front basket were visible at the scene. Rescue workers, along with local villagers, immediately started a search for the missing individuals. They first discovered the body of the mother, 56-year-old Pan, in the middle of the canal. She had a cloth tied around her waist, which was connected to a piece of traditional Thai cloth (pha khao ma). Shortly after, the body of her 38-year-old son, Preecha, was also found nearby, similarly tied with cloth. A villager hunting for frogs and toads in an adjacent palm plantation had initially seen the motorcycle’s engine still running in the canal and promptly alerted the rescue centre. Suspecting that the vehicle's occupants had fallen into the water, he urged immediate action to locate them. During the investigation, Pan's husband revealed that she had been battling chronic illnesses and was under significant stress. Additionally, their son Preecha had a mental condition. These factors might have contributed to the tragic incident, although the exact circumstances remain unclear. Police Lieutenant Piyanat noted that the bodies have been sent to Sanam Chai Khet Hospital for an autopsy. The investigation will continue as the authorities aim to uncover the precise cause of this unfortunate accident. Thailand is strongly pursuing an ambitious goal of increasing bilateral trade with Malaysia to US$30 billion by 2025. This determined push will be a highlight at the upcoming Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting set for July 4 in Kuala Lumpur. Chotima Iemsawasdikul, Director-General of Thailand’s Trade Negotiations Department, revealed the details, stressing the importance of this third JTC summit between the two nations. Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, representing Thailand, is preparing to spearhead the discussions. This meeting marks Thailand’s first JTC engagement with an ASEAN country for this year. For 2023, trade between Thailand and Malaysia garnered an impressive US$25 billion, and Thailand aims to boost this figure by an additional US$5 billion by the next year. Central to these discussions will be the facilitation of market access for Thai agricultural products into Malaysia, reflecting a strategic effort to remove existing trade barriers. The bilateral talks will also delve into new economic partnerships to bolster mutual economic benefits and encourage entrepreneurial endeavours. Particular focus will be on enhancing economic activities and streamlining trade along the border regions. Plans include the creation of a task force to oversee cross-border trade and investment and the development of a road connecting the Sadao immigration checkpoint in Thailand's Songkhla province with Malaysia’s corresponding entry point. In the realm of trade dynamics, Malaysia is noted as Thailand’s primary trading partner within ASEAN, and fourth globally. In the first five months of this year alone, bilateral trade hit US$10.787 billion. Thai exports to Malaysia include vehicles, auto parts, and computer parts, whereas imports from Malaysia predominantly feature crude oil, circuit boards, and chemical products. Additionally, Thailand's significant leap to the 32nd position on the Global Trade Modernisation Index 2024 underscores its moderate but improved performance in digital trade. The nation stands third among ASEAN countries, reflecting its growing readiness for digital-era commerce. TAT Launches "Rockstar" Walking Tours in Bangkok's Chinatown
webfact posted a topic in Thailand News
Riding the wave of popularity following Thai K-pop sensation Lisa's blockbuster "Rockstar" music video, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is launching a new walking tour to promote Bangkok's Chinatown. This tour will encompass key areas like Yaowarat, Songwat, and Talad Noi. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is also joining the effort, planning to add more Chinese atmosphere to Chinatown by replacing footpath paving with new tiles. These will feature the "Bo Tan" flower design and a "Yaowarat must go on" statement, enhancing the area's cultural appeal and making it a visual delight for tourists. Since the release of the 3-minute "Rockstar" music video, there's been a noticeable surge in visitors, particularly Lisa's fans, flocking to Yaowarat Road at night. They are keen to visit the exact spot where their idol performed. Pheu Thai party leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who is also vice chair of the government’s "soft power" committee, commended the music video, calling it superb and a prime example of "soft power." Paetongtarn noted that Yaowarat has now become a household name and suggested that the government will leverage the video’s popularity to promote other attractions in the area, such as its famous street food. Responding to criticism that the government is capitalising on Lisa’s international prowess, government spokesman Chai Wacharonke defended the initiative. He asked, "What is wrong with riding the wave to promote our cultural heritage?" This intersection of entertainment and tourism promises significant benefits, drawing global attention to a culturally rich district and boosting local businesses. With carefully curated walking tours, visitors can delve deeper into Bangkok's historical and culinary delights while walking in the footsteps of their favourite star. -- 2024-07-01 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe -

Plodprasop Suraswadi, former deputy prime minister affiliated with Pheu Thai, has stirred controversy today by labelling the recent senatorial election as "the century's most disgusting." He took to Facebook to voice grave concerns about electoral malpractice possibly tainting nearly half of the 200 newly-designated senators. Plodprasop called on the Election Commission to swiftly investigate allegations of bloc-vote rigging and other improprieties. He urged that any senator involved in suspected misconduct be barred from official ratification due next week. In a particularly damning anecdote, Plodprasop cited an outvoted candidate who claimed that politically connected middlemen had hosted secretive banquets on the outskirts of Bangkok. There, contestants dubbed "puppets" were allegedly offered cash bribes in exchange for favourable votes, with up to 400 candidates supposedly participating. These meetings, he said, included individuals with unlikely careers such as car drivers, fish vendors, and local broadcasters. The accusations have spotlighted Bhumjaithai, under the de facto leadership of Newin Chidchob, as a potential manipulator in this election. Criticism points towards the party's alleged orchestration of victories, particularly in Buriram, where Bhumjaithai holds substantial sway, and other provinces in the Isaan region. Despite these serious allegations, Election Commission Secretary-General Sawaeng Boonmee affirmed that all 200 senators will be officially ratified on Wednesday. However, he did mention that any senator found guilty of violating election laws could face suspension at a later date. The recent senatorial race, unique in Thailand’s political landscape, saw candidates voting for one another rather than having votes cast by the general public, as is standard in parliamentary elections. This complex, intra-candidate voting system has evidently made way for potential abuses, adding another layer of controversy to an already contentious political climate.
