Police have determined that a recent fire at a chemical factory in Rayong was deliberately set, and arrest warrants for multiple suspects are expected shortly. This discovery follows an intensive investigation into the fires in the region. The assistant national police chief, Lt. Gen. Thathchai Pitanilaputra, announced today that the fire at the chemical storage facility in Rayong was confirmed to be the result of arson. This conclusion comes amid a broader investigation into several fires at chemical factories owned by a single individual who has been operating these businesses for many years. Picture courtesy: Naewna Specific details about which Rayong chemical factory fire was determined to be arson have not been disclosed. However, it's known that Win Process Co.’s chemical warehouses were severely damaged by fire on April 22nd, followed by another significant blaze at Map Ta Phut Tank Terminal Co. Ltd.’s facility on May 9th. These incidents have raised serious concerns about safety and security measures at chemical storage sites in the area. According to Lt. Gen. Thathchai, arrest warrants will soon be issued for five to ten individuals linked to the arson. The suspects include executives responsible for overseeing the businesses at these dangerous chemical storage sites. These individuals will face separate charges for their involvement in the crimes. The police are continuing their investigation and examining further evidence to ensure that all responsible parties are identified and prosecuted. The authorities are tightening security protocols at chemical storage facilities to prevent such incidents in the future. This revelation has sparked conversations about the need for stricter regulatory oversight and enhanced safety measures to protect the community from the risks associated with chemical storage and handling. More information is expected to come out as the investigation proceeds and arrests are made. The local community remains on high alert as this case unfolds. Bangkok Criminal Court. File photo In a dramatic turn of events, the Criminal Court has handed down a suspended one-year jail sentence to Move Forward Party MP Jirat Thongsuwan, coupled with a hefty fine of Bt500,000. The ruling comes following Jirat's defamation of Air Chief Marshal Thares Punsri, a former deputy permanent secretary for defence, two years ago. During a parliamentary session in 2022, Jirat accused Thares of corrupt practices related to the procurement of aircraft and other military equipment. These serious allegations have now led to Jirat's sentence, underscoring the legal consequences of defamation in public office. While Jirat's jail term is suspended, meaning he won't serve time unless he commits further offences, he is still required to pay the significant fine. Additionally, the court has mandated Jirat to publish apologies in three leading newspapers for five consecutive days, adding a public element to the legal remedy sought by the court. The public gained insight into the court's decision when Jirat shared the news on his Facebook page, creating a stir on social media. Reactions have been mixed, with some showing support for Jirat and others agreeing with the court's verdict, highlighting the divisive nature of the case within the community. The case itself has raised important questions about the responsibility of public officials in making allegations and using their parliamentary platform. It also underscores the legal and ethical lines involving public accusations and the defence of personal reputation. Thares Punsri has not publicly commented on the ruling. The outcome of this case may serve as a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future, particularly within the realm of Thai politics. -- 2024-06-29 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Two South Koreans, aged 50 and 41, were arrested in Chiang Mai for overstaying their visas and working illegally as tour guides. Identified only as Mr Han and Mr Kim, they were apprehended on a road in Chiang Mai City following a tip-off from locals. The arrests were made by the Royal Thai Immigration Bureau, which had been alerted that the men were offering unauthorised tour services. Upon questioning, both admitted to charging between 10,000 and 15,000 Baht for their bespoke tour services. They had been operating via social media for approximately two months. Immigration officers charged them with overstaying their visas and working without the required permits. In Thailand, the tour guide profession is protected, meaning foreigners cannot obtain work permits or visas for this role. South Korean authorities had also been notified and checked the men’s history. They discovered that Mr Han and Mr Kim were allegedly involved in a luxury car Ponzi scam in South Korea, affecting over 60 victims with losses totalling over 109 million Baht. The two men will face legal consequences in Thailand before being deported to South Korea to answer for their alleged crimes. The specific duration of their visa overstay was not disclosed by Thai officials. This case highlights ongoing issues with illegal workers in Thailand's tourism sector. Authorities continue to urge citizens to report suspicious activity to help maintain control over lawful employment and tourism practices within the country. A 43-year-old Thai woman, Papaipit Linse, residing on Upper Market Street, Haverfordwest, is scheduled to appear in court next month on charges of murdering her seven-year-old son, Louis Linse, at their home on January 10th. At her initial appearance at Swansea Crown Court in February, it was determined that Linse was unfit to enter a plea due to mental health issues. Her defense lawyer, Dyfed Thomas, referred to a psychiatric evaluation suggesting that her fitness to plead could improve with further assessment. As a result, she was moved to a secure mental health facility for ongoing treatment and observation. The case returned to court on June 26th, where it was agreed that Linse would face another hearing on July 17th. Court proceedings have been repeatedly postponed to allow for necessary psychiatric assessments. The incident, which occurred before 10:45 am on January 10th, drew significant attention when emergency services were called to Linse's residence, where they found Louis Linse deceased. This triggered an immediate investigation by Dyfed-Powys Police into the circumstances surrounding the boy's death. An inquest into Louis Linse's death was initiated by HM Coroner for Pembrokeshire, Paul Bennett, on January 19th but was adjourned pending the police investigation's outcome. The community of Haverfordwest continues to be deeply affected by this tragic event and awaits further updates as Linse's upcoming court appearance may shed light on her mental condition and the legal proceedings ahead. Senate Election Fraud Claims Spark Investigation Demand Picture courtesy: Simabforkids Allegations of vote-rigging have thrown the recent Senate election into turmoil, with losing candidates and observers urging the Election Commission (EC) to investigate suspected fraud. Allegations of vote-rigging have thrown the recent Senate election into turmoil, with losing candidates and observers urging the Election Commission (EC) to investigate suspected fraud. Over 100 unsuccessful candidates, spearheaded by Senator-elect Nanthana Nanthawarophas, are calling for a thorough inquiry. Senator Nanthawarophas, representing a media professionals group, disclosed that the top seven candidates seemingly colluded, avoiding interactions with others during the election process. "Some groups conspired to manipulate the voting results, potentially backed by political parties," she asserted, adding that the EC must investigate. Although Nanthawarophas stopped short of calling for the Senate election's annulment, she stressed the need for scrutiny and action against irregularities. "We can't let the caretaker Senate, appointed by coup makers, stay in power indefinitely because of this." She also advocated for future Senate elections to allow direct voter participation, simplifying the currently complex and reportedly tainted process. Caretaker senator Somchai Swangkarn exposed further details on Facebook, alleging that candidates were bribed to cast votes for specific interests. District-level candidates reportedly received 4,000 baht each for registration and other expenses. If they advanced to the provincial level, they received an additional 2,000 to 3,000 baht for further expenses. "But these candidates didn't vote for themselves; they almost unanimously voted for particular candidates, who now dominate the top spots," Somchai revealed. Yingcheep Atchanont, manager of the Internet Dialogue on Law Reform (iLaw), highlighted similar concerns. He noted that Angkhana Neelapaijit, a former National Human Rights Commission member and Senate winner, received fewer votes than lesser-known candidates from Buriram. "Some candidates from Buriram, like a former school director and a village health volunteer, received more votes than Angkhana, who ranked lower on the list," he pointed out. These allegations have intensified calls for the EC to investigate, aiming to preserve the election's integrity and address any suspected collusion or fraud.
