  4. Picture: INN INN reported that two high profile teams of inspectors were out checking pubs clubs and "sathan borikan" and places that "appeared to be sathan borikan" in Yannawa and Bang Khor Laem in the Thai capital Bangkok. Sathan borikan is a Thai euphemism for place of prostitution. The BMA authorities wanted to make sure that customers were safe and inspire confidence. Advisor to the BMA Gen Adit Ngamjitsuksri led the way assisted by local officials, police and military at four establishments in Yannawa. Other officials checked places in Bang Khor Laem. INN mentioned a large number of names but didn't say if anything untoward was found. The checks were clearly follow ups to the Mountain B fire that claimed 20 lives in Sattahip though the media drew no such connection. Fire exits, extinguishers, fire alarms and smoke detectors were all checked as well as observance of Covid protocols. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-26 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 8. Picture: Siam Rath The appeal court in Bangkok has upheld the death sentence handed down earlier by the Criminal Court to former deputy commerce minister Banyin Tangpakorn for the murder of construction magnate Chuwong Sae-tang in a staged car crash seven years ago. After reviewing the evidence the court upheld last year's ruling in Phrakhanong against the former MP for Nakhon Sawan, in northern Thailand, reported Siam Rath. Chuwong died on 26th June 2015 apperently while being driven in a luxury car by Banyin after a golf meet. The car hit a tree in Chalerm Prakian R9 Road between sois 48 and 50; this is in Prawet district of eastern Bangkok near the Rama 9 park. The court upheld previous findings about the length of time taken to drive from the golf course that was only 37 kilometers away (it took two hours) and irregularities about the speed the vehicle was travelling. He said he had avoided an oncoming car while travelling at 80 kmph but the reality was there was no such car and he was only doing 30 kmph. The victim had had his head bashed in, it was not the result of a car accident. The murder resulted after illegal share dealings came to light. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-26 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 10. by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor It has emerged that the 43-year-old policewoman, jailed on Monday after being refused bail, was working within Thailand’s Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), the equivalent of the US Department of Homeland security and which reports to the Prime Minister’s Office. The Provincial Police chief in Ratchaburi this week also raised the fact that the woman was 38 years old when she joined the police force in 2017 as one of the many circumstances that are difficult to understand about this case. A high-profile case involving a police officer abusing her maid over a two-year period is turning into a deepening investigation into corruption which is raising disturbing questions about the accused’s possible links with a Thai senator appointed by the previous junta. The accused woman has told investigating officers that she landed her position in the police through her links with a senior influential figure even though she was over age and only possessed a vocational-level certificate in accounting. The 43-year-old was denied bail by Ratchaburi Provincial Court this week after it was told her victim feared for her safety if she was released. Assistant National Police Commissioner Police Lieutenant General Surachate Hakparn has assured the Thai public that police are conducting a transparent and in-depth inquiry into the unusual case and circumstances surrounding the high-profile arrest last Saturday of a police officer serving with the Special Branch Unit of the Royal Thai Police. It was used by both police and firemen as a traffic and accident reduction center and was attached to an equipment storage area. There were cracks elsewhere in the building too. Station chief Pol Col Setphan Srisakhon said that police civil engineers had been on the scene and said that the basic structural integrity of the building was sound. The part that collapsed was a later addition to the building. The UTCC’s survey showed that household with monthly income of 50,000 Baht had debts of more than 500,000 Baht and most of those debts were in the personal loan and credit card loan, with these loans/credit card spending mostly used for buying consumer goods and/or durable goods. 16. Sanook Thai Caption: A spirit called me to come find the dead body Sanook reported on eerie goings on in the police jurisdiction of Phra Samut Chedi in Samut Prakan province. Cops went to a zinc sheeting shack in Soi Choi Pheng where they found 60 year old Wongsin face up in bed. He'd been dead at least three days. There was no sign of foul play. Next door neighbor Jan Sribua, 67, said that Wong had worked in a factory but had turned to drink. She would regularly make sure he was eating properly with food handouts. She last saw the deceased on Saturday. But today after preparing a meal for her relative she decided to take a nap and while she was dozing off heard a voice in her ear: "Mr Wong is dead". She got up and took a shower and tried to get her husband to go next door but he was afraid so she peeked in herself and found her neighbor dead and called the police. The body was sent for autopsy. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-26 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 18. Daily News Thai Caption: Driver surrenders (to police) Daily News followed up on the case of a female dog name "Jao Khao" (Whitey) that was injured when a black car ran over her near the entrance to Big C in Phetchabun, north eastern Thailand. A royal organisation heard about the incident and the injured animal was taken to Kaset University in Bangkok for treatment. Pol Capt Sanit Sannichart of Muang district police said that on Wednesday a "Mr A" surrendered to police and was charged with animal cruelty for which there is a possible fine of 40,000 baht and/or two years in prison. The court decided yesterday to fine him 10,000 baht reduced to 5,000 on admission with no jail time. "A" said he was deeply sorry to animal lovers for what had happened. He said he had sounded his horn and thought the dog had moved aside. His animal loving girlfriend had been unable to sleep or have food for days and when he had seen the news he had contemplated suicide. He consulted with WDT (Watchdog Thailand) before surrendering to police. 20. Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported on an extraordinary tale of a small 54 year old woman who managed to lock herself in her own ensuite bathroom at a townhouse in Bangkok. This happened because the lock on the door had been installed the wrong way round. When the door locked she was unable to get out. Despite her screams and efforts to free herself it all came to nothing. Desperate after several days surviving on tap water she scribbled a farewell note on the bathroom wall in cream. It began: "I got stuck on the 22nd and couldn't get out..." Picture: Thai Rath It continued that if she died please would relatives handle her affairs for her. Fortunately it didn't come to that after the woman's elder sister, unable to contact her on the phone for days, told Phrakhanong, Bangkok, police that her sister was missing. She lived alone. Pol Capt Charnchai Sornsiang and a patrol went to the four story town house in On Nut Soi 27 and found the gate locked and a metal grill sealing the front. The captain vaulted the gate and with the help of heavy tools managed to break into the house. Picture: Thai Rath When they did they immediately became aware of screams coming from the third floor. It was a simple matter to just open the ensuite bathroom door and inside was "A" in an exhausted state. She said that at 8 pm on August 22nd she had decided to go to bed. She placed her phone on the bed. But after finishing her business she was unable to get out. The door had always been like that with the knob on the outside. Picture: Thai Rath She screamed and screamed for help but no one heard her and tried to use things in the bathroom to break down the door but failed. She wrote the farewell note in desperation fearing she would die. Capt Charnchai advised her to seek hospital treatment as she hadn't eaten for three days. He said that the woman's predicament was made worse by the fact the whole house was completely locked up and she was high up inside the body of the house and couldn't be heard. He advised people not to have door locks installed in the wrong way - especially if you live alone. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-26 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
