Picture: Daily News The Sattahip district chief mobilized a large force of officers on Na Jomtien beach yesterday evening to ensure that the sands, roads and footpaths on a 1 km stretch were free of traders. The traders moved in over the last 2-3 months after the completion of 600 million baht's worth of beach restoration work, reported Daily News. Mostly at night there were traders clogging the beach, roads and footpaths meaning that tourists could not move about freely - according to the law. Picture: Daily News The traders have complained bitterly but been told that they are not welcome here and will be prosecuted if they don't comply. Yesterday evening Acting Major Chartchai Sripho-orn addressed a large contingent on the sands; there were harbor department staff, department of provincial administration officers, Sattahip police, soldiers and municipality officers. Picture: Daily News He took to the mike to speak of the mess and traffic caused by the illegal traders and warning anyone who breaches the order that they will be prosecuted. The beach was a "treasure for the people" noted the media. Picture: Daily News The formerly narrow sands have been completely transformed like over Pratumnak Hill where huge sums have been spent to widen the beach between north and south Pattaya. Different authorities operate there. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-06-28 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. Photo: INN News By Thai Newsroom Reporters FORMER PREMIER ABHISIT Vejjajiva questioned Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s ability to run the country at all since he could not even find a few hours to spend responding to last week’s House interpellation. During a seminar held at parliament on the 90th anniversary of the 1932 Revolution of Siam, Abhisit said he wondered if Prayut could efficiently run the country in the first place since the coup leader-turned-premier failed to attend last week’s House interpellation which directly involved him. “Given his failure to have managed to find a few hours to respond to a House interpellation, which had been scheduled beforehand, how could the prime minister possibly run the country in the first place?” said the former premier and former leader of Democrat Party. In lifting the face mask mandate the government said those who are vulnerable and infected should continue wearing them and while it is now up to the rest of the general public whether they do so or not, they were told these masks are essential in crowded or poorly ventilated places. Reporters from this TV channel visited some popular tourist spots in this southern province and saw that some foreign tourists had already started taking off their face masks but Thai tourists were still wearing them. Remco van Wijngaarden with his husband and their three children. 'We are a regular family here.'//Image: ©Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken Ministry of Foreign Affairs | Government of the Netherlands As a child, Remco van Wijngaarden wanted to become a diplomat. He has been the Dutch ambassador to Thailand for a year now. A wonderful country to live with his husband and children. ‘We're an regular family here. And Thailand is very interesting to work in, the country is gaining political and economic importance in the region.’ What was the first thing that struck you about Thailand? ‘My husband and I have been holidaying in Thailand for years, and that includes when we lived in China. What struck me initially was the city of Bangkok. It is the second most popular city in the world for tourists, and it’s obvious why. It has everything and offers an exciting mix of contrasts. Skyscrapers alongside old neighbourhoods, and chic Michelin-starred restaurants alongside stalls selling the world’s best street food. It’s such a wonderful and pleasant juxtaposition. Bangkok is an international city and yet the culture here is still distinctly Thai. What I enjoy about living here is that I now have the opportunity to learn about life in Thailand beyond what the tourists see. And now that the coronavirus restrictions have been lifted, I can finally start travelling to other parts of this large country. And I can visit Laos and Cambodia, which the embassy in Bangkok also serves. I am also the Netherlands’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, (UNESCAP), the UN’s largest regional organisation. Its aim is to promote socioeconomic growth in the region. The Netherlands has been a member since 1947 because, at the time UNESCAP was established, the Netherlands still had sovereignty over areas in the region.’ The Dutch Ambassador in Thailand, Remco van Wijngaarden. You have three young children and are married to a man. How do people in Thailand respond to your rainbow family? ‘We have been here a year now and things are going very well. Before Thailand, we lived in Shanghai where I was consul-general. Even though Shanghai is China’s most tolerant city, life was not always simple for us as a family. Often we couldn’t be fully open about our identities and had to retreat back into ‘the closet’, as it were.' 'Only once did the Chinese authorities extend an informal invitation for an event to my husband Carter. Here, on the very first day I was introduced at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I was asked how my husband and family were doing and whether we were enjoying living in Thailand. Invitations to events here are always for both of us, and that makes a world of difference.' 'However, our marriage is unfortunately not legally recognised in Thailand, and that can sometimes be a hassle. But there is a lot of public support for same-sex marriage. Some temples also bless same-sex marriages. And the Thai government recently approved registered partnerships for LGBTIQ+ couples, which is a major step towards greater equality in Thailand. 'My eldest daughter is black and our two youngest children are biracial, as is my husband. We want to help our kids become resilient and at the same time protect them from racism and discrimination.’ Here we are a regular family. At the same time, I am increasingly aware that we can serve as an example to others. I was recently involved in the opening of an online workshop about LGBTIQ+ storytelling, which the Netherlands funded. I spoke briefly to the audience about my husband and children – more to set them at ease than anything else. The impact was bigger than I had expected. While I was talking I heard people cheering and applauding. And people asked a lot of questions. An important question I ask myself when choosing a country to work in, including Thailand, is whether I can make a difference in terms of my work and whether our family will thrive there. How open and tolerant is the society? My eldest daughter is black and our two youngest children are biracial, as is my husband. We want to help our kids become resilient and at the same time protect them from racism and discrimination.’ Full story: https://www.government.nl/latest/weblogs/meet-the-ambassadors/2022/meet-the-ambassador-thailand --2022-06-28

By Panithan Onthaworn The Bank of Thailand (BoT) said on Monday the economy will grow in 2022 and 2023 thanks to domestic demand and tourism, despite inflation rising above its target range. “Going forward, the recovery in domestic demand and tourism industry will be major drivers of the Thai economy,” assistant governor of the bank’s Monetary Policy Group, Piti Disyatat, told an analysts meeting. The BoT’s current growth projection is 3.3 percent this year, followed by 4.2 percent in 2023. However, Piti warned that there is a greater chance that inflation may be higher than anticipated, breaching the target range of 1-3 per cent. Thailand saw its biggest jump on inflation in almost 14 years in May, with a 7.1 per cent jump year-on-year. Bangkok (file photo) New study recognises the Thai capital’s affordability, connectivity, transportation, and fantastic cuisine. TAT Newsroom Bangkok – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to report that Bangkok has been ranked the second best city in the world and the best city in Asia for digital nomads, in a new study by UK-based flexible working solutions provider The Instant Group. Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said “This is a wonderful accolade for both Bangkok and Thailand, recognising as it does the Thai capital’s modernity, connectivity, and affordability attributes. It is even more rewarding when considering how well it complements Thailand’s goal of growing its digital nomad travel sector under the ‘Visit Thailand Year 2022: Amazing New Chapters’ campaign.” Second only in the world to Lisbon, Portugal in the global ranking of 80 cities for digital nomads, Bangkok scored well in the key areas of affordability, weather, broadband speed, scenery, and transport. Its impressive placing was helped by the wide variety of excellent local cuisine and street food on offer, the more than 15,000 high-speed Wi-Fi hotspots available, great transport options, and some of the lowest priced accommodation available globally. Bangkok was also one of only two Asian cities to make it into the survey’s top 10 cities from around the world, the other being Seoul in 7th place. Research has shown there are already 35 million digital nomads worldwide, and with advances in technology, remote working and workplace culture it is thought that by 2035, this number could be one billion. Predictions say the global nomadic workforce will account for one in every three employees. Alongside Bangkok, Thailand also offers other popular destinations ideal for digital nomads, such as Phuket, Samui, and Chiang Mai.
