Air Canada on Monday announced that it will launch seasonal service on Dec. 1 between its hub at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). The service, on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, will operate four times weekly. The final eastbound departure from Bangkok is scheduled for April 17. The westbound flight, AC65, departs Vancouver at 11 p.m. and arrives in Bangkok at 5:55 a.m. two days later, all times local. The eastbound flight, AC66, departs Bangkok at 8:30 a.m. and arrives at 6:35 a.m. in Vancouver. That flight technically arrives before it departs, a quirk of eastbound travel over the International Date Line. By Nop Meechukhun Surin – A Lithuanian suspect, Mr. Marius, continued to deny all charges of murder and physical assault against a transgender woman, Teerapong Lamlua, in Surin last week while Teerapong’s body was cremated for a religious ritual Sunday, June 19th. According to local police, all of the collected evidence and witnesses’ statements had led to identifying Marius as the perpetrator. However, he denied all charges and is currently detained at Surin Prison while the investigation is undergoing. On Sunday, Teerapong’s family, friends, and relatives hosted a funeral in her hometown in the Prasat district. Her pet dog “Emma” also joined the cremation and always looked at the coffin of her owner. Court rejects petition to delay merger of DTAC and True Thailand’s Central Administrative Court has dismissed a petition, seeking to put a hold an announcement by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) giving the green light to the merger plan between two mobile phone service providers, Total Access Communication, or DTAC, and True Corporation (True). Thailand’s Central Administrative Court has dismissed a petition, seeking to put a hold an announcement by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) giving the green light to the merger plan between two mobile phone service providers, Total Access Communication, or DTAC, and True Corporation (True). The petition was filed by Napat Vinitchaikul, a member of the NBTC’s Monitoring and Evaluation Committee, who challenged the legitimacy of the telecom regulator’s announcement. The Central Administrative Court’s ruling, which was issued on June 16th, said that Nipat’s claim that the merger would harm the public interest is unfounded, as DTAC and True are still in the process of amalgamation and the setting up of a new entity, adding that the merger has not caused any damage as claimed. Tassanee Vejpongsa | AP by Michael Bridge During a high-level SE Asia trip, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met with Thailand’s prime minister last week. It was part of an effort to strengthen what Austin says is Washington’s “unparalleled network of alliances and partnerships” in the region. This visit was heavily reported across the States including in the Washington Post. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, who is also Thailand’s defense minister, also met Austin last month in Washington. Thailand and the United States are longtime military allies, despite a cooling of relations after the 2014 military coup that brought former army commander Prayuth to power. Last week’s visit was Austin’s first to Thailand as defense secretary. A U.S. Defense Department statement issued after the meeting said Austin and Prayuth “shared perspectives on regional security issues and discussed opportunities to strengthen the U.S.-Thai alliance.” It said Austin declared Washington’s interest in strengthening “interoperability between the U.S. and Thai forces and to support Thailand’s modernization requirements.” The two men also discussed prioritizing cooperation in emerging technical areas, such as the cyber and space technology sectors, as well as Thailand’s desire for “enhanced defense industry cooperation,” the statement said. Thai media had widely reported that the Prime Minister was keen to discuss arms procurement with Austin, including the F-35 fighter aircraft, but Austin did not comment specifically on that in remarks to the media. Tensions between the U.S. and China Tensions between the U.S. and China have been growing in part over Beijing’s claims to Taiwan and much of the South China Sea, and its increasing power and influence in the region. The Philippines have always stated that China has been encroaching on its territory especially building a sizeable military airbase on one of its islands. In a speech Saturday at the annual Shangri-La Dialogue defense summit in Singapore, Austin said China’s “steady increase in provocative and destabilizing military activity near Taiwan” threatens to undermine the region’s security and prosperity. He said he was proud that Washington’s “unparalleled network of alliances and partnerships has only deepened” in the past year. China’s defense minister, Gen. Wei Fenghe, said at the same conference that the U.S. is trying to turn Southeast Asian countries against Beijing and is seeking to advance its own interests “under the guise of multilateralism.” China over the past decade has been trying to extend its influence in Southeast Asia, both through aid and investment, including its “Belt and Road” infrastructure projects and use of its navy and other maritime resources to press its claims to vast areas of the South China Sea. In a briefing in Bangkok, Austin said a conversation he had in Singapore with his Chinese counterpart was “an important step in our efforts to develop open lines of communication” with Beijing’s defense leaders. “America never ... shies away from honest competition, but we don’t seek conflict, nor do we seek a region that’s split into hostile blocks,” he said, according to a defense department transcript of his remarks. “It was an important opportunity to raise our concerns about the potential for instability in the Taiwan Strait and to underscore our ... long-standing policy toward Taiwan as unwavering and unchanged.” The U.S.-Thai alliance benefits both our nations and supports peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. The first documented contact between the United States and Thailand was recorded in 1818. The first agreement signed with Thailand was the 1833 Treaty of Amity and Commerce. Thailand and the United States were also close allies during the Vietnam War, and in 2003, Washington designated Thailand a major non-NATO ally, one of about twenty worldwide. U-Tapao airport was in fact built by the United States to accommodate B-52 bombers for missions in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia during the Vietnam War. Construction began on 15 October 1965 and was completed on 2 June 1966.[ U-Tapao was the primary Southeast Asian airfield for US Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bombers, called "Bee-hasip-sawng" (B-52) by the local Thais. Such status past and present mean the U.S. regards Thailand as a strategic partner and facilitates some aspects of military assistance and cooperation. The annual multinational Cobra Gold military exercise, one of the world’s biggest, is hosted in Thailand in partnership with the United States. Chinese investment Thailand naturally must tread carefully as it also has ties with the Chinese who are investing in infrastructure projects across the country. China's level of FDI into Thailand ranked second in 2020 – with an investment value of US$ 1.048 billion with 164 approved projects. So, expect the Chinese to send over some high-ranking government official soon to make sure their voice is heard too. Meanwhile Thailand has developed close ties with other ASEAN members—Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam—whose foreign and economic ministers hold annual meetings. Thailand will also host of APEC 2022, when I am sure the topic of the South China Sea issues will be aired along with other topics including the environment. Assume that both superpowers China and the US will be following proceedings with interest. Thailand has to be seen to be listening to all sides. According to Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow, the meeting of economic powers, as well as any proposed energy-related solutions, will have a significant impact on all nations affected by the global energy crisis. Minister Supattanapong said the Thai government has been running its own campaigns to support the production and sale of electric vehicles (EVs) that run on clean energy in order to help mitigate the problem. He noted, however, that additional external factors beyond the government’s control have been blamed for the current fuel crisis. Prior to the pandemic two years ago, the price of crude oil was US$70-80 per barrel (2,470-2,820 baht). Oil prices fell to around $50 per barrel during the height of the pandemic, which restricted travel and reduced global gasoline consumption. According to the energy minister, the price of crude rebounded to $70 per barrel before soaring to nearly $100 following the widespread availability of coronavirus vaccines and resumption of economic activity in 2021. Fuel prices have since reached an all-time high of $120 per barrel and continue to climb amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. By Online Reporter Mr. Wanchai Singto, Director of the Wildlife Conservation Department Conservation Area Administrative Office 3 Phetchaburi Branch was speaking during part of the mass sterilization campaign of up to 600 macaques which live in Khao Takiab and Hin Lek Fai. Mr. Wanchai said his department is not overly concerned about the threat of monkeypox. He said the main concern is that local macaques may become infected with the disease from tourists visiting Hua Hin. Mr. Wanchai said that the sterilization campaign began on June 1 and so far around 200 macaques have been sterilized. The macaques were also screened for monkeypox, all of which had tested negative. Naew Na Thai Caption: Scary moment - Car hits fried chicken shop - 5 year old and gran seriously injured Naew Na reported that the site on Facebook that translates as "So You Wanna Be Famous Return Part 3" had a post claiming that a drunk old person driving had an accident at Lam Lukka Klong 4. A young child was hit. The poster at first thought there was an innocent explanation then understood the driver was drunk and was fleeing the scene of an accident. The media had several pictures of the devastation caused after they went to the Soi 49 area of Lam Lukka, Pathum Thani to investigate. Picture: Naew Na Police told them that a man called Phaiboon, about 60, was in a Honda City but hit a Mitsubishi car while parking. He didn't stop and then hit a Toyota pick-up before plowing into a fried chicken shop and a fruit seller, then a motorcycle and then piled over Soi 49 and hit a song thaew. A woman called Wareerat, aged 60 and Nareerat, 27 were injured along with a five year old called Woraphop who were all taken to hospital. Nareerat told reporters later she was selling things and heard the sound of a collision at a distance. She said her son had a dislocated shoulder and her mother a knee injury. She was only slightly hurt as she managed to get out of the way, avoiding what seemed like certain death. Picture: Naew Na She said she knew the driver responsible who was a drinker who didn't flee the scene and offered compensation through an intermediary later. It happened on Saturday and she had been advised to contact the police station to sort out payments. A noodle seller called Prem, 52, said it all started with a car reversing and pressing the wrong gear. They were happy with his compensation arrangements after 10,000 baht damaged was caused to his green vehicle. He didn't know if drink had been a factor.
